Daniel 7
Daniel had a dream first year of king Belshazzar verse 1
In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon
Daniel had a dream and visions of his head
upon his bed
THEN he wrote the dream – and told the sum of the matters
Daniel sees four beasts come out of the sea verse 2- 3
Daniel spoke and said – I saw in my vision by night
and – BEHOLD the four winds of the heaven
strove upon the great sea
AND four great beasts came up from the sea
diverse one from another
First beast: Lion verse 4
The first was like a lion [Babylon] – and had eagle’s wings
I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked
and it was lifted up from the earth
and made stand upon the feet as a man
and a man’s heart was given to it
Second beast: Bear verse 5
AND behold another beast
a second like to a bear [Medo-Persia]
and it raised up itself on one side
and it had three ribs in the mouth of it
between the teeth of it
and they said thus unto it
Arise – devour much flesh
Third beast: Leopard verse 6
After this I beheld and lo another like a leopard [Greece]
which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl
the beast had also four heads
and dominion was given to it
Fourth beast: 10 horned verse 7- 8
After this I saw in the night visions
and behold a fourth beast [Rome]
dreadful and terrible – and strong exceedingly
and it had great iron teeth – it devoured
and brake in pieces and stamped the residue
with the feet of it
and it was diverse from all the beasts that were
before it and it had ten horns
I considered the horns – and – BEHOLD
there came up among them
another little horn [Antichrist]
before whom there were three of the
first horns plucked up
by the roots
And – BEHOLD in this horn were eyes like
the eyes like the eyes of man
and a mouth speaking great things
Ancient of days verse 9- 10
I beheld till the thrones were cast down
and the ANCIENT OF DAYS did sit
WHOSE garment was white as snow
and the hair of HIS head like the pure wool
HIS throne was like the fiery flame
and HIS wheels as burning fire
A fiery stream issued and came forth from before HIM
thousand thousands ministered unto HIM
ten thousand times ten thousand stood
before HIM the judgment was set
and the books were opened
Little horn [Antichrist] speaks verse 11- 12
I beheld then – BECAUSE of the voice of the great words
which the horn spoke
I beheld even till the beast was slain – and his body destroyed
and given to the burning flame
As concerning the rest of the beasts
they had their dominion taken away
YET their lives were prolonged for a season and time
Son of man appears before Ancient of days verse 13- 14
I saw in the night visions – and – behold
one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven
and came to the Ancient of days
AND they brought HIM near before HIM
AND there was given HIM dominion – glory – a kingdom
that all people – nations – languages – should serve HIM
HIS dominion is an everlasting dominion
which shall not pass away
HIS kingdom that which shall not be destroyed
Daniel asks for explanation of four beasts verse 15- 18
I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body
and the visions of my head troubled me
I came near unto one of them that stood by
and asked him the truth of all this
SO he told me
and make me know the interpretation of the things
These great beasts – which are four are four kings
which shall arise out of the earth
BUT the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom
and possess the kingdom forever – even forever and ever
Daniel again asks about fourth beast verse 19
THEN I would know the truth of the fourth beast
which was diverse from all the others
exceeding dreadful
whose teeth were of iron – and his nails of brass
which devoured – brake in pieces
and stamped the residue with his feet
Daniel asks about the little horn verse 20- 22
AND of the ten horns that were in his head
and of the other which came up
and before whom three fell
even of that horn that had eyes
and a mouth that spoke very great things
whose look was more stout than his fellows
I beheld and the same horn made war with the saints
and prevailed against them
UNTIL the Ancient of days came
and judgment was given to the saints of the most High
and the time came that the saints
possessed the kingdom
Fourth beast will rule for three and a half years verse 23- 25
Thus he said – The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom
upon earth which shall be diverse from all kingdoms
and shall devour the whole earth
and shall tread it down
and break it in pieces
AND the ten horns out of this kingdom
are ten kings that shall arise
and another [Antichrist] shall rise after them
and he shall be diverse from the first
and he shall subdue three kings
and he shall speak great words against the most High
and shall wear out the saints of the most High
and shall think to change times and laws
and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times
and the dividing of time [three and a half years]
Godly kingdom set up verse 26- 27
BUT the judgment shall sit
and they shall take away his dominion [Antichrist]
to consume and to destroy it unto the end
AND the kingdom [Millennial] and dominion
and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven
shall be given to the people of
the saints of the most High
whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom
and all dominions shall serve
and obey HIM
Daniel was troubled by all he saw verse 28
Hitherto is the end of the matter
As for me Daniel – my cogitations much troubled me
and my countenance changed in me
BUT I kept the matter in my heart
COMMENTARY:
DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers
: 16 I came near to one of them that stood by and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. (1156 “asked” [ba‘ba] means seek, desire, request, make petition, beseech, pray for, or beg)
DEVOTION: There is meaning to life. Those who are followers of Jesus Christ know that HE came to give life meaning. Life without HIM would mean that we have no one to guide us properly. HE gave us instruction in the Bible, so that, we could know what truth really is and how to practice it.
Our world today is trying to tell us that there is no truth. They are trying to say that whatever you think is truth is truth. You can make up your own truth. There is no falsehood. If you believe it is true then it is true.
The Bible states that this is not so. Only God give us truth. All truth is God’s truth. So we need to check out what others say is true.
Example that could be given in school is that you don’t have to obey your parents if you don’t want to. You can declare yourself independent of your parents. Some children have done this.
The Bible states that children are to obey their parents in the LORD and that it is pleasing to the LORD if they do it and HE will bless them for honoring their parents.
Two views, which is right? The choice today is ours. We can either follow the LORD or we can follow what men say to be true. Daniel wanted to know what God was teaching him. We should want the same thing. Listen to God on a regular basis. HE is speaking to us through HIS word the Bible.
CHALLENGE: Our desire should be to be like Daniel and ask questions of the LORD and wait for HIS answers.
DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers
: 18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever. (6922 “saints” [quaddiyh (Aramaic) means holy, separate, or uniquely pure in morality. (Remember that Daniel is not in chronological order)
DEVOTION: What a vision Daniel received of the LORD. The New Testament informs us that God spoke in the Old Testament through dreams and visions. Here is a vision of the end times.
Daniel sees the four kingdoms leading up to the Millennial kingdom. The first kingdom is Babylon that Daniel is presently in. The second is the Medo-Persian kingdom that was coming after the reign of Belshazzar. Next comes the Greek kingdom of Alexander the Great. Finally we have the Roman Empire. It is broken up but the little horn is the coming Antichrist of the Tribulation period.
Daniel receives a vision of the throne-room in heaven. The Ancient of Days is on the throne. One like the Son of man is coming before the Father and presented with a kingdom. This is none other than Jesus Christ. It is a beautiful picture. The angel is explaining everything to Daniel as it is happening.
The enemy is able to go against the saints that are on the earth and to speak against the God of heaven for a time period. However, the time period is short and the LORD is going to judge this little horn. He is going to be defeated and the saints are going to be given the kingdom with Christ as their ruler.
Who are these “saints?” It is thought that this word is used of three different groups of saints. The first group is the Old Testament saints that lived until the day of Pentecost. The second group is made up of individuals from the day of Pentecost until the Rapture of the Church. These are New Testament saints. Then there are the Tribulation saints that are followers of the LORD during the time of the Tribulation and into the Kingdom age. In this kingdom the saints are going to serve and obey Christ.
This whole vision troubles Daniel. He cannot understand it all even with an angel explaining it to him. The chapter states that his thinking was troubled and his appearance changed. But he kept all these things in his heart as he knew that they were from the LORD.
Daniel saw the future. It was troubling to him. He saw the different rulers and kingdoms. He saw that they didn’t honor the LORD.
We live in a nation that is turning farther and farther away from the LORD. However, we also live in a nation that has many that love the LORD. It is our responsibility to reach as many as we can before the return of the LORD.
Are we praying for at least one relative, friend, neighbor, or fellow worker to accept the LORD? Who is on your list? Does this vision trouble us? Judgment is coming to our world!!!
An individual who is serving the LORD is going to be set apart for that service. This is even going to happen in the Millennial Reign of Christ. Service is necessary. The LORD requires us to work for HIM in love.
CHALLENGE: With the knowledge of the future we should all have a prayer list of those we love and pray for them daily to become a believer.
DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers
: 25 He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, Shall persecute the saints of the Most High, and shall intend to change times and law. (NKJV)
DEVOTION: We live in a day and age when everything is changing. Some changes are good but others are bad. One of the things about change is that it can cause confusion for a while.
Daniel is seeing a vision of the future. When there are going to be a lot of changes taking place. One of the changes is that there is coming an Antichrist that is going to change all the laws of the land.
We read in the New Testament that he is going to give a mark on those who are followers of him that will be used to buy and sell things. If you don’t have his mark you will not be able to buy or sell anything.
Who are the ones who don’t receive his mark? They are those who will be following the LORD during a period called the Great Tribulation. This time period covers seven years after those who are followers of the LORD are taken to heaven to stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ to receive rewards. Here on the earth there will be 144,000 witnesses who will receive the seal of the Holy Spirit and they will be witnesses after the church is taken up to heaven.
Now we have two groups on the earth just like today. One group will be witnessing for the LORD and the other group will be fighting anyone who believes in the LORD.
The law of the land in this time period is going to lean toward what the Antichrist sets up. Believers will be persecuted with the intent of death.
CHALLENGE: We have a window now where we can openly witness for the LORD. That window might close at any time. We need to take advantage of all the open doors we have to witness for the LORD.

: 28 Hitherto is the end of the manner. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart. (7475 “cogitations” [ra‘yown] means thoughts, vexation, longings, strivings, contemplation, or mental conception)
DEVOTION: Have you ever attended a class in high school or college or seminary where the professor/teacher started talking and you didn’t understand a word of what he/she was saying? Now I am not talking about a foreign language. I have attended many classes throughout my life. Some of them were medical classes. Some of them were college classes. Some of the, were seminary classes. I even attended a few doctoral classes. Each one had its own language.
We had a history teacher who just graduated with her Ph.D. and we didn’t understand her at all. She was teaching a college class at a masters or doctoral level to freshmen in college.
Here we have Daniel given a vision of the future that confused him. He didn’t understand most of it even with the explanation of the angel. It was not just the explanation but all the facts regarding the future that troubled him.
We would like everything to be simple. Daniel would just like the kingdom to be set up right away. That is our thoughts sometime as well. God had a plan before the foundation of the world and HE is working HIS plan. HE has NEVER been surprised by what is happening here on this earth. HE never had something happen that HE didn’t know before HE created the world.
Things might confuse us on a daily basis as to what is going to happen next and even when we know the basic plan we still wonder where we are in HIS plan.
Always remember that God is omniscient and nothing happens without HIS knowledge of the beginning and the end.
CHALLENGE: Even in confusion we need to trust HIM. HE will give us what we need to know and then we need to share it with others. Sometimes we can think too much.

QUOTES regarding passage
7:16 In order to find an answer to his questions, the prophet “approached one of those standing there.” Since angels were standing in the presence of the Ancient of Days ready to serve him (cf. v. 10) and since in the Bible angels often interpret visions for mortals (cf. Dan 9:21ff.; 10:10ff.; Zech 1:9ff.; 2:3ff.; Rev 17:7ff.), this probably was an angel, possibly Gabriel (cf. 8:16 and 9:21). (Miller, S. R. (1994). Daniel (Vol. 18, p. 211). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.)

15–16 Despite the victorious conclusion of his dream, Daniel was distressed (v.15) about the suffering the future might hold for his people. Perhaps he was also distressed by his inability to understand the meaning of several features of his dream, particularly those relating to the fourth empire. Therefore, approaching the angels who were standing nearby—a detail he had not previously mentioned—he asked one of them to explain some of these puzzling details (v.16). Though the angel’s name is not given, it could conceivably have been Gabriel, who speaks to him in chapter 9. (Note 9:21, which seems to imply that Gabriel had spoken to Daniel on an earlier occasion.) (Archer, G. L., Jr. (1986). Daniel. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Daniel and the Minor Prophets (Vol. 7, p. 92). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.)

In Daniel’s visions he was given to see the course of each of the empires which these wild beasts figure. That is, each wild beast is of such a character as to picture the leading features in the entire history of the empire which it represents. For instance, the whole course of Babylon is set forth in the winged lion, which afterward had its wings plucked, a man’s heart given to it, and was made to stand erect upon its feet. Then the whole course of Medo-Persia is pictured in the vision of the bear with three ribs in its mouth, which lifted itself up on one side. The entire history of the Grecian empire and its four-fold division is set forth in the four-headed and winged leopard. And the course of the Roman empire right on down to the Time of the End (a condition which has not yet been reached) is depicted in the beast, dreadful and terrible, with the great iron teeth and the ten horns. It is important to see this. Some take it for granted that, as the Roman empire has passed off the scene, all that is connected with this Roman beast is gone too, and so it has no further interest for us who live in the gospel dispensation; but the contrary is the truth. 7:15–17. Like Nebuchadnezzar before him (cf. 2:1; 4:4–5), Daniel was disturbed by his dream (cf. 7:28). Though he had demonstrated the ability to interpret dreams on previous occasions (chaps. 2; 4), he could not interpret this one or his next one (8:15). So he called on one of those standing nearby, apparently the angel later identified as Gabriel (8:16; 9:21), to interpret the vision to him. It was explained that the four great beasts represent four kingdoms. As stated earlier, the four kingdoms are Babylon, represented by the lion; Medo-Persia, represented by the bear raised up on one side; Greece, represented by the winged leopard with four heads; and Rome, represented by the mongrel beast. (See the maps of these four empires.) (Pentecost, J. D. (1985). Daniel. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 1351). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Ver. 16. I came near unto one of them that stood by, &c.] To one of the angels that attended, either the throne of judgment, or the Son of man in his approach to his divine Father; and asked him the truth of all this; the substance of these visions; what these images, presented to his view, were shadows and representations of; so type and truth, shadow and substance, are opposed to each other. The real meaning of all this was what he asked; nor need any be ashamed to ask of whomsoever they can hope to get knowledge of truth, and especially of superiors, of the angels of the churches, or pastors of them: so he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things; he interpreted everything in the vision to him, and gave him the true meaning and real design of the whole, as follows: this was asked and told, not when Daniel was awake, and was considering of what he had dreamed; but in his dream, in his vision by night; this was all transacted in a visionary way, both the things and the interpretation of them. FROM MY READING:
2 Kings 8
The king restores the Shunammite widow’s land.
INSIGHT
Nothing happens in our lives or in the world apart from divine appointment or permission. Behind every event and incident, there is divine providence. The Shunammite widow, who has done so much for Elisha, is remembered and cared for years afterward. The Lord has a wonderful memory for those who feed Him when He is hungry and minister to Him when He is in need (see Matthew 25:37). The conversation between Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, and the king might seem an accident, but it is providential. When we abide in the will of God, life is sown with divine coincidences.

SPECIAL AUTHENTICATION
For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? Is it not in that thou goest with us? So shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth. Exodus 33:16
Moses prayed for a special authentication of [God’s people and their] mission. This is the message of Exodus 33:16. You can hear him argue. “Wherein,” he said—“For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? So shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.”
[Such a prayer for revival is] that the church should be as she is meant to be. The church is meant to be separate. The church is meant to be unique. “Now,” said Moses to God, “I am asking for this something extra, because I am concerned. Here are we, Thy people. How are all the other nations to know that we really are Your people? They are looking on at us; they are laughing at us, mocking us, and jeering at us; they are ready to overwhelm us. Now I am asking for something,” said Moses, “that will make it absolutely clear that we are not just one of the nations of the world, but that we are Thy people, that we are separate, unique, altogether apart.”
The prayer for revival, then, is the prayer that the church may again become like that. And my argument is that nothing but some unusual outpouring of the Spirit of God can do that. What is needed is something that cannot be explained in human terms. What is needed is something that is so striking and so extraordinary that it will arrest the attention of the whole world. That is revival.
A Thought to Ponder: This is a prayer that the church should be as she is meant to be.

The Days of Yore
“For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?” (Deuteronomy 4:32)
This challenge was given by Moses to the children of Israel as they were preparing to enter the Promised Land. It was vital that they cease all complaining and begin to behave in a manner appropriate to their stature as God’s chosen people.
For this they needed to regain a sense of historical perspective, and Moses urged them to study the history of the world since the beginning. Presumably, this would be possible only through studying the book of Genesis “since the day that God created Adam [same word as ‘man’] upon the earth.”
It is significant that “the days that are past” were implied by Moses to have begun essentially at creation, with no hint of any long geological ages before that. The 25 or more centuries from Adam to Moses had provided enough history to instruct that particular generation about God’s plans for the world, to prepare them for their own key role in their accomplishment, and to appreciate the real meaning of their own lives as they awaited the promised redeemer who was to come someday with salvation.
Now, if the Israelites needed a true historical perspective, we need one today far more. In addition to what they had, we now also have the history of Israel, the first coming of Christ, God’s completed revelation, and the Christian dispensation from which to learn and profit. Our understanding of God and His purposes should be far greater than theirs, so we have much greater responsibility. May God help us to study and believe and understand all that has gone before, as recorded in His Word, so that we also can be prepared to fulfill our own role in God’s great plan of the ages for eternity.

When You’ve Been WRONGED by Erwin W. Lutzer
Never take what a spear thrower says too personally. You have to understand that spear throwers see the evil in their hearts as belonging to others. The hostility and anger that you receive from them unjustifiably are very likely accusations that apply to them. (p 89)

A friend gave me this bit of advice. “Never wrestle with a pig. For one thing you will become dirty; second, the pig will love it; and third, he plays by a different set of rules.” How true! Spear throwers are essentially irrational people. They are not bound by fairness, truthfulness, decency, or respect. You can’t reason with them you can’t meet them on a level playing field. (p 89)
