Exodus 9

Division between the people of God and Egyptiansverses 1-5

THEN the LORD said to Moses

Go in to Pharaoh – and tell him

Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews

Let MY people go that they may serve ME

FOR if you refuse to let them go – and will hold them still

BEHOLD the hand of the LORD is on your

cattle which is in the field – horses

asses – camels – oxen – sheep

there shall be a very grievous murrain

And the LORD shall sever between the cattle of Israel and cattle of Egypt

and there shall nothing die of all that is the children of Israel

And the LORD appointed a set time – saying

Tomorrow the LORD shall do this thing in the land

LORD kills only cattle of Egyptiansverses 6-7

And the LORD did that thing on the morrow

and all the cattle of Egypt DIED

BUT of the cattle of the children of Israel

DIED NOT ONE

And Pharaoh sent – and – behold

there was NOT ONE of the cattle of the Israelites DIED

And the heart of Pharaoh was HARDENED

and he did not let the people go

Plague of boilsverses 8-12

And the LORD said to Moses and to Aaron

Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace

and let Moses sprinkle it toward the heaven

in the sight of Pharaoh

And it shall become small dust in all the land of Egypt

and shall be a BOIL breaking forth with blains on man

and on beast – throughout all the land of Egypt

And they took ashes of the furnace – and stood before Pharaoh

and Moses sprinkled it up toward heaven

and it became a BOIL breaking forth with

blains on man and on beast

And the MAGICIANS could NOT stand before Moses

BECAUSE of the BOILS

FOR the BOILS was on the magicians

and on all the Egyptians

And the LORD HARDENED the heart of Pharaoh

and he hearkened not unto them

as the LORD had spoken to Moses

LORD warns Pharaoh hail is comingverses 13-19

And the LORD said to Moses

Rise up early in the morning – and stand before Pharaoh

and say to him

Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews

Let MY people go – that they may serve ME

FOR I will at this time send all my plagues on

your heart – and on your servants

                        and on your people

That you may KNOW that there is NONE like ME in

all the earth

FOR now I will stretch out my hand

that I may smite you and your people with pestilence

and you shall be cut off from the earth

And in very deed for this cause have I RAISED you up

FOR to show you MY power

and that MY name may be declared

                                                throughout all the earth

As yet exalt you yourself against MY people

that you will not let them go?

BEHOLD – TOMORROW about this time I will cause it

to rain a very grievous HAIL

such as has not been in Egypt since the

                                                foundation thereof even until now

Send therefore NOW – and gather you cattle

and all that you have in the field

FOR on every man and beast which shall be found

in the field – and shall not be brought home

the HAIL shall come down on them

and they shall die

Some Egyptian took warning seriouslyverses 20-21

He that FEARED the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh

made his servants and his cattle flee into the house

and he that REGARDED NOT the word of the LORD

left his servants and his cattle in the field

Hail hits all of the land except Goshenverses 22-26

And the LORD said to Moses

Stretch forth your hand toward heaven

that there may be HAIL in all the land of Egypt

on man – upon beast – on every herb of the field

                                                throughout the land of Egypt

And Moses stretched forth his ROD toward heaven

and the LORD sent THUNDER and HAIL

and FIRE ran along on the ground

and the LORD rained HAIL on the land of Egypt

So there was HAIL – and FIRE mingled with the HAIL

very grievous – such as there was none like it in all the l

and of Egypt since it became a nation

And the HAIL smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was

in the field – both man and beast

and the HAIL smote every herb of the field

and brake every tree of the field

ONLY in the land of Goshen – where the children of Israel were

            was there no HAIL

Pharaoh says ENOUGHverses 27-32

And Pharaoh sent – and called for Moses and Aaron

and said to them

I have sinned this time – the LORD is RIGHTEOUS

and I and my people are wicked

Entreat the LORD (for it is enough) that there be no more

mighty thunderings and HAIL

and I will let you go – and you shall stay no longer

   And Moses said to him

As soon as I am gone out of the city

I will spread abroad my hands to the LORD

                                    and the thunder shall cease

neither shall there be any more HAIL

that you may KNOW how that the

                                                                        EARTH is the LORD’S

BUT as for you and your servants

I know that you will not yet FEAR the LORD God

And the flax and the barley was smitten

for the barley was in the ear –             and the flax was bolled

But the wheat and the rye were not smitten

for they were not grown up

Moses prays – Pharaoh hardened moreverses 33-35

And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh

and spread abroad his hands to the LORD

and the thunders and HAIL ceased

and the rain was not poured on the earth

And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the HAIL and the thunders

were ceased – he SINNED YET MORE

and HARDENED his heart – he and his servants

And the heart of Pharaoh was HARDENED

neither would he let the children of Israel go

as the LORD had spoken by Moses

COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 3        Behold, the hand of the LORD is upon your cattle which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous murrain. (1698 “murrain” [deber] means pestilence, plagues, cattle plague, bubonic plague, disease, or pandemic.)

DEVOTION:  Warnings are given to Pharaoh regarding the consequences of his actions of not letting the children of Israel leave Egypt. The previous plagues didn’t seem to affect him in his decision making process.

The water of Egypt turned to blood was also done with the magicians enchantments. The frogs going everywhere in the houses of the Egyptians was also done with the magicians enchantments. The third plague of lice on everyone and every animal couldn’t be repeated by the magician’s enchantments. They stated that it was the finger of the God of the Hebrews. This still didn’t get Pharaoh to change his mind. Next was the plague of flies everywhere. Pharaoh wanted Moses to compromise and just sacrifice in the land of Egypt but Moses refused. He asked Moses not to go very far from Egypt to sacrifice but Moses refused to compromise. So Pharaoh hardened his heart even more against the LORD and HIS people.

Now the next plague was going to affect the animals of Egypt. The sin of stubbornness is causing all these plagues to continue. Pharaoh was a very stubborn man.

Each time the LORD sent a warning and then proved true to HIS word regarding a plague coming and Pharaoh continued to resist the Word of the LORD.

Today we have warnings given by the LORD to those who are in nations that hurt HIS people. There are consequences to hurting the people of God which is the church today. The consequences will come. Some have come by way of earthquakes, fires, and other natural causes but the people are not listening.

God is still HOLY. God is still LONGSUFFERING. God is still in CONTROL. If you doubt any of these things realize that HE will act in HIS time and judge nations for their actions against HIM.

CHALLENGE: Realize that we need to honor HIM even in times of national hardening of the heart against the Word of God and HIS people. We honor HIM by spreading the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 11      And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was on the magicians, and on all the Egyptians. (7822 “boils” [shachiyn] means inflamed spot, eruption, ulcer, a painful sore with a hard core filled with pus, or elephantiasis.)

DEVOTION:  The individuals who tried to fake the power of God with the power of Satan were finally caught. This plague affected their lives as well. They had already stated that one of the plagues was the finger of God.

However, they were still by the side of Pharaoh when this plague broke out on all the people. They were covered with boils just like the rest of the people. Their false god couldn’t protect them against the one TRUE God.

Those who serve Satan think that they are free for all judgment and try to tell others that it is true. They want individuals to follow them instead of the LORD. They seem to have just enough ability to trick innocence children and adults into thinking that God will do nothing to them while they are sinning.

Disobedience has consequences and when people continue to sin God will have to deal with them in HIS time and in HIS way. HE didn’t deal with the magicians right away except to have their rods eaten by Moses’ rod.

There are people who say they believe in the God of the Bible testing HIM to see if HE will deal with them when they sin. If HE doesn’t deal with them then they are probably just fakers.

True believers are going to face correction from the LORD. This is not seen right away in this passage but it will be seen later. At this point God is showing Pharaoh and HIS people that HE is all powerful. Both groups need to learn this lesson. Sadly, neither group learned very much at this time.

CHALLENGE:  Are we learning from these past events or our present events that God wants us to be obedient to HIM?

: 16      And in very deed for this cause have I raised you up, for to show in you MY power; and that MY name may be declared throughout all the earth. (8034 “name” [shem] means renown, fame, reputation, fame, glory, the general estimation and recognition of a person, or understood in regard to their name)

DEVOTION:  Purpose is a key thought in the Word of God. God does everything with a purpose in mind. HE never tests believers without giving them a way to escape. HE never sends more than we can take our way if we are one of HIS children. HE manifests HIS power in our lives at special times when we have a special need that HE meets.

Here again HE states that HE is manifesting HIS power to spread HIS fame not only in Egypt but around the world. HE wants all nations to know what HE is capable of doing.

Later on we will find that the people of Jericho had heard what HE had done in Egypt and in other nations. They were afraid of HIM. They knew what HE was capable of and didn’t want to have anything to do with HIM.

With each plague we learn more about the power of God and why HE uses HIS power when HE does. HE protects HIS people. HE doesn’t allow too much to happen to them, so that, they don’t think there is a way to escape.

God provides a way to escape for the children of Israel. HE shows them that they are special by not causing the plagues to affect them. It is only the Egyptians that have been hurt by the last two plagues. The Egyptians are starting to get the message regarding the strength of the God of the Hebrews.

This same God is our God today. HE sent HIS Son Jesus Christ to provide us a way to escape hell and receive heaven for eternity. Not only that but HE provides an alternative to sinning – living a righteous life with HIS help.

We will never be sinless like Christ but we can look for a way to escape any temptation to sin that HE allows in our life.

CHALLENGE:  HIS purpose is for us to learn obedience.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 20      He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses (3373 “feared” [yare] means reverent, afraid, or be frightened.

DEVOTION:  Isn’t it amazing that Pharaoh could see all the plagues and still not believe in God? His magicians believed in God. They called one of the plagues the finger of God. They could copy or counterfeit the first few plagues but the lice infected them.

Also, the land of Goshen was protected from the later plagues. The people of Egypt watched and saw that the LORD protected the land of Goshen. Some of the servants of Pharaoh saw all the other plagues and believed that the LORD could send hail on the land of Egypt.

What did they do? They took their cattle inside the house to protect them. Even the children of Satan know that the LORD has power and avoid it when they can. Many of the other landowners didn’t believe and left their servants and cattle out. The hail killed them all.

Each plague was against one of the gods of Egypt. They worshiped many false gods. They thought that their gods were as good as the God of heaven. They found out that they were wrong.

The LORD sometimes puts a hedge of protection around HIS people. Those who are followers of God have a reverence for HIM. They know that HE has power to change whatever is happening in our world.

We need to remember that God is protecting us from some of the things that could happen to us. HE doesn’t protect us from all. Some things come our way because of sin. Some things come our way because they are necessary for our growth.

When we approach God, we need to remember that HE only lets what is for our good to come our way. We need to continually look to HIM for guidance. HE sends us warnings in HIS word. HE gave the people of Egypt warnings. Are we listening?

If we are listening are we telling others about their need to follow Jesus? Some of the Egyptians believed the warning of Moses. Did that make them followers of the LORD? NO!! There is more to being a follower of the LORD then just knowing about HIM and HIS power. Many think they know the LORD but are not really followers of the LORD.

CHALLENGE: Spread the Word to all that we serve a POWERFUL God. HE is going to send HIS Son, Jesus Christ, back in the future. They need to be ready. When God tells us to move – do we move? Could the trumpet sound today?

: 27       And Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “I have sinned this time: the Lord is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.” (2398 “sinned” [chataʾ] means 1 to sin, miss, miss the way, go wrong, incur guilt, forfeit, purify from uncleanness. 1a (Qal). 1a1 to miss. 1a2 to sin, miss the goal or path of right and duty. 1a3 to incur guilt, incur penalty by sin, forfeit. 1b (Piel). 1b1 to bear loss. 1b2 to make a sin-offering. 1b3 to purify from sin. 1b4 to purify from uncleanness. 1c (Hiphil). 1c1 to miss the mark. 1c2 to induce to sin, cause to sin. 1c3 to bring into guilt or condemnation or punishment. 1d (Hithpael). 1d1 to miss oneself, lose oneself, wander from the way. 1d2 to purify oneself from uncleanness. [Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship].)

DEVOTION:  This was a truly remarkable confession by Pharaoh.  He had up to this point refused to allow Moses’ and Aaron’s request for the people to go out and worship God.  However, at this point in the plagues, the plagues themselves became severe enough for Pharaoh to acknowledge his sinfulness, and that his sinfulness was the root of what was going on.

Often it takes a time of crisis in order for people to face their need for God.  That is why there have been so many foxhole and deathbed conversions.  People fear the consequences of their choices and lifestyles.

God’s desire for us is that we confess our sin and repent of it (1 John 1:9).  However, that does not alone guarantee that God will spare us from the natural consequences of our sin (Galatians 6:7).  While God is quick to forgive our sins in terms of its eternal spiritual consequences, He does not often choose to remove the earthly physical consequences, largely because it is by these consequences that He disciplines us.  He disciplines us in order that we will be quicker to obey in the future and want to avoid sinful behavior.

So, if you are looking for a quick fix for your sins, realize that God wants to forgive them and have a close relationship with you.  Trust Him through the discipline that He brings into your life, and be ready for more when you disobey Him!

CHALLENGE:  Are you willing to humble yourself before God completely and accept the consequences (whatever they are) for the sins you have committed? (MW)

QUOTES regarding passage

9:27–30, 33–35. Such an awe-inspiring display of omnipotence brought an unqualified repentance from Pharaoh (I have sinned, v. 27; cf. 10:16). Acknowledging that God is right (9:27), he consented to release the Israelites (I will let you go, v. 28). Moses promised to ask God to stop the plague, though he recognized that Pharaoh’s repentance was superficial and merely self-seeking (v. 30).

Since the plague was raining murderous hail through Egypt, except in Goshen, how could Moses move about so freely? Again the plague was probably in the fields (cf. v. 3) and selective in what it destroyed (viz., people, animals, trees, flax, and barley). Moses was correct (cf. v. 30); though the true God was gracious in bringing this holocaust to an end, Pharaoh remained calloused against Him. (Hannah, J. D. (1985). Exodus. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 124). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Another royal lie (vv. 27–35). Seeing the devastation of his land, Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron, something he had done before (8:8) and would do again (10:16). However, this time the proud king acknowledged the justice of God and admitted that he had sinned! (He would do that again. See 10:17.) However, his confession was insincere because it didn’t lead to obedience. Moses knew that the king didn’t really fear the Lord. All he and his officials wanted to do was stop the terrible hailstorm.

God in His grace answered Moses’ prayer and stopped the plague. Pharaoh in his duplicity reneged on his promise and wouldn’t let Israel go. When would he ever learn that you can’t fight against God and win? (Wiersbe, W. W. (1998). Be delivered (p. 42). Colorado Springs, CO: Chariot Victor Pub.)

9:34 sinned again. Pharaoh’s culpability increased because when he saw God answer Moses’ prayer—an entreaty he had requested (v. 28)—still all his admissions and promises were promptly swept aside. he and his servants. For the first time mention is made of the stubborn resistance of Pharaoh’s entourage, all of whom had hardened their hearts. The striking contrast emerges in God’s directions to Moses for the next plague: He had hardened their hearts for a purpose (10:1). (MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (2006). The MacArthur study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Ex 9:34). Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers)

The fearful hail was accompanied by fire (lightning) which ran along the ground, and thunderings. These are called in the Hebrew “the voices of God.” The tempest is the type of God’s wrath in judgment. Hail is mentioned repeatedly in Revelation and there it is called “the plague of hail.” (Rev. 8:7; 11:19; 16:21.) The plagues of Egypt will be repeated on this earth during the great tribulation. Note Pharaoh’s confession, which shows that this plague had made a deep impression on him. (Verse 27.) Pharaoh used the name of “Jehovah” and the name of God (Elohim). “Intreat Jehovah that there be no more voices of God” (literal rendering). What a desperately wicked thing the human heart is. He sinned more after this than before. (Gaebelein, A. C. (1912). The book of Exodus: A Complete Analysis of Exodus with Annotations (p. 28). New York: “Our Hope” Publication Office)

Ver. 35. And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, &c.] Instead of being softened, as it seemed to be when under the plague, it became harder and harder when delivered from it: neither would he let the children of Israel go; though he had so absolutely promised it, and assured them that he would not keep them, and that they should not stay any longer: as the Lord had spoken by Moses; that so his heart would be hardened until the signs and wonders were multiplied upon him, God designed to perform, ch. 4:21 and 7:3. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 1, p. 359). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

34, 35. hardened] Different words in the Hebrew. In v. 34 the word means “made heavy,” i.e. obtuse, incapable of forming a right judgment; in v. 35 it is stronger, and implies a stubborn resolution. (Barnes, A. (1879). Notes on the Old Testament: Exodus to Ruth. (F. C. Cook & J. M. Fuller, Eds.) (p. 27). London: John Murray.)

FROM MY READING:

(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)

It may be as simple as this – somewhere along the line pastors have missed the message that if they are to have fruitful and productive ministries they will need to pastor with both eyes open. They will need to have one eye focused on the Lord and the work before them, and the other eye scanning the horizon for the enemies.

What Nehemiah understood was that there is no building without opposition, no victory for God without a show of force from the devil. (p. 145) (This little church had none by Gary E. Gilley)

Prayer by Billy Graham:

‘Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, ‘Woe to those who call evil good,’ but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable… We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from sin and Set us free. Amen!’
With the Lord’s help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we once again can be called ‘One nation under God!’ (I don’t agree with everything that Billy Graham has done but I believe he is speaking the truth here)

Ecclesiastes 12

The pursuit of temporal things is futile.

INSIGHT

Our society tends to breed materialism. Young couples expect to own a house, two cars, and maybe a boat. We dream of the day when we can afford to take exotic vacations and own a bigger house. Game shows offer spectacular prizes, and lottery tickets are sold by the thousands. But Solomon experienced tremendous wealth and found himself unhappy. He learned that eternal things matter most. God wants His children to invest their brief lives in others–not just in material things. (Quiet Walk)

VERBAL INSPIRATION

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
Deuteronomy 18:18
The particular words used in the Bible are divinely inspired. I shall try to demonstrate to you that the Bible claims for itself what is called verbal inspiration It is not merely that the thoughts are inspired, not merely the ideas, but the actual record, down to the particular words. It is not merely that the statements are correct, but that every word is divinely inspired.
Verbal inspiration means that the Holy Spirit has overruled and controlled and guided the writers of the Bible, even in the choice of particular words, in such a way as to prevent any error, and above all to produce the result that was originally intended by God.
The Bible makes specific claims in this matter of inspiration. Take, for instance, certain terms that the Bible uses of itself, such as Scripture. That designates “holy writings”; not ordinary writings but special ones–holy writings.
Let us take a more specific claim. Take that great prophecy, which is very crucial in this matter, spoken by Moses and recorded in Deuteronomy 18:18: “I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.” All the prophets of the Old Testament make this claim. They do not say that they suddenly decided to write; they say, “The word of the Lord came….” (see, for example, Ezekiel 1:3; Hosea 1:1; Jonah 1:1), and they tell you exactly when it came. They were called, they were commissioned, and the word was given to them. So they are constantly saying something like, “Thus saith the Lord.” That is their claim.
A Thought to Ponder
It is not merely that the statements are correct, but that every word is divinely inspired.

The Lasting Noahic Covenant
“And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.” (Genesis 9:11)
When God gave Noah this promise, the world had just been through the devastating cataclysm that flooded the entire globe and destroyed all except those on the Ark. The world was fearful and barren, and there seemed nothing to prevent another such flood from coming on the earth.
Nevertheless, God’s promise—not only to Noah but also to the animals (Genesis 9:9-10)—has been kept for over 4,000 years. God later reminded Job of this promise when He told him that He had “shut up the sea with doors.…And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed” (Job 38:8, 11). The psalmist also referred to this covenant. When the whole earth had been covered “with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains. At thy rebuke they fled.…Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth” (Psalm 104:6-7, 9).
God has kept His Word, and there has never been another worldwide flood. Sadly, however, many modern compromising Christian theologians and scientists have said that the Flood must have been only a local or regional flood in order (they hope) to please the evolutionists, practically all of whom insist that the earth is 4.6 billion years old and never had any global flood.
If that were true, however, then God has broken His promise. There have been numerous local and regional floods in the world since Noah’s day. But God has kept His promise. The Flood indeed was a unique cataclysm in which “the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished” (2 Peter 3:6), and such a flood has never occurred again.
