COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 4        These six were born unto him in Hebron; and there he reigned seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years. (4427 “reigned” [malak] means to ascend the throne, to induct into royalty, be king, or rule)

DEVOTION:  The lists of genealogies continues for the next few chapter to give us a history of the mankind. Now we have the descendants of David. It gives us a list of the kings of Judah.

David had been promised as a youth that he would be king in Israel. He served in the court of Saul. Saul chased David.  Saul wanted to kill David. David had to hide from Saul for many years.  He suffered many years before he became king of Judah alone and then finally the promise was fulfilled and he ascended the throne of the whole nation of Israel.

David became king for over forty years. His rule was good except for some occasions when he strayed from the LORD. He was a man after God’s own heart. He was beloved by the LORD.

Other kings were compared to David. He was the standard. One king was better than him. He didn’t have the sin of Bath–sheba. He cleaned up Judah and Samaria after the ten tribes were taken into captivity by Assyria.  The unique family relations can sometimes confuse us. We have one king who is evil having a son who is good or we have a good king with an evil son. The Word of God tells us that this is all happening in the sight of the LORD. The LORD knew what was happening to the children of Israel all the time. HE is omniscient.

It seems that the kings thought that God wasn’t watching or didn’t care what they were doing. HE proved that HE was long-suffering. HE also, proved that HE was one to keep HIS WORD. When HE promised judgment it came.

Too often we think that because God promises us something that it will happen overnight. David waited many years. He was not willing to take any shortcuts to gain the throne of Israel. The time period of serving his father and then Saul and then running from Saul was a training period before he became king.

We find many promises in the Word of God that relate to our future with Christ in heaven. One of the promises is that we will reign with HIM. Today we have the suffering now, but someday it will pass and those who have followed Christ as their Savior will be KINGS. We need to be prepared to rule with HIM during the time period of the Millennium. How is your training coming? Are you in shape? HE is going to sound the trumpet soon. Praise the LORD!!

CHALLENGE: Leadership is an awesome responsibility. Our leadership now as well as in the future will be determined by our reaction to people and things NOW. React well!!!

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 5        And these were born unto him in Jerusalem, Shimea, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel (3205 “born” [yalad] means beget, bare, travail, delivered, or birth.)

DEVOTION:  Solomon was the tenth son of David. Yet David picked him to be the next king  after him. He saw something in his son that others might find out about later. Bathshua was the wife that he met when she saw her bathing from his palace balcony. They had an affair and he killed her husband before he married her.

Now one of her sons was going to be king over nine of his brothers. Birth order meant nothing to David. Solomon was the wisest man. He did many things for the LORD. HE built the Temple. HE make the nation rich but at the end of his life he married too many women who wanted to worship false gods and he allowed it to happen. That was what caused the division of the nation after his death.

His mother was the only woman that he had four children by and yet he was the fourth. So sometimes, birth order doesn’t mean anything in a family as far as being the one who will be picked to lead.

Children are all different in a home. Each child has their own ability. None are the same. One can be inclined to be mechanical in nature. One can be a book worm. One can be a natural athletic. Parents should know what gifts their children have and help them to develop whatever gift the LORD given them.

We can’t put all our children in the same category. David looked at Solomon and knew that he would make a good leader. He picked him. Bathsheba reminded him of his choice when an older son tried to be king. David remember his choice and make Solomon king even while a party was going on for his brother who thought he could become king.

Parents are encouragers and should be all of the life of their children. Bathsheba fought for her son and won.

CHALLENGE: As a parent make sure you are encouraging your children in the gifted area they have to use for the rest of their life.

: 9        These were the sons of David, not including his sons born to his concubines. Their sister was named Tamar. (269 “sister” [achowth] means relative, uterine, a female relative, kinswoman, blood-relation, a female person who has the same parents as another person)

DEVOTION:  One daughter of David is mentioned here. She was the daughter who was attacked by her brother because he thought he loved her and instead of asking his father David for her hand in marriage he took her.

Once he took her he didn’t love her anymore. So he kicked her out of his house in shame. This caused her other brother to hate his brother to the point of wanting to kill him. He did kill his brother over what happened to his sister.

Family problems were something that seemed to follow David once he became king. When he became king it seemed that he didn’t have time to raise a family. Rebellion seemed to be the theme of his sons against him.

We need to watch what happens when our occupation takes over our life and we leave the family to others to raise or spend time with. Our families need us. The church needs families that care for one another when they are not in church. If the families of the church are living the right way at home then the church will be strong.

Samuel followed the example of Eli in the area of raising his children. David seemed to follow the example of letting other raise his children. This can be a problem for the servants of the LORD. They think they are doing God a great service when HE really wants them to start at home serving HIM.

Are you starting at home raising your children to honor the LORD by spending time with your children in good family activities? This can be a place to start. It is harder to raise a family today than when I raised my children. They are more occupied with video games or social communication than with just plain talking with each other. Two children can be in the same room now and they will text each other rather than talk out loud.

Communication is one of the main concerns today with parents and children. We need to be parents and grandparents that talk out loud with our children and grandchildren.

CHALLENGE:  Don’t let them only text you or just plain not talk with you because they are so busy on their mini computers called phones today.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 15      And the sons of Josiah were, the firstborn Johaman, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum. (1060 “firstborn” [bakowr] means firstling, eldest, oldest offspring, or an offspring who came first in the order of birth.)

DEVOTION:  Birth order meant a lot in the Old Testament. The firstborn received the most blessings. In this case the firstborn also became king usually after the father died. It was the place of honor.

Even today we find that the firstborn son is given many privatizes. This encloses being the one that learns the most from the father. He is usually the one to takes over the work of the father on a farm if they work a farm.

As a one of privilege they have the greater responsibility in the home and outside the home. Because he/she is the oldest they are expected to set the example for the rest of the children.

Most of the time they are supposed to be following the parents in their relationship to the LORD. This should be found in every family that honors the LORD. If the oldest is following the LORD correctly then the rest can see his example and follow him.

Too often this is not the case. If the firstborn is not following the LORD then the rest seem to fall into place in not following the LORD. It is sad to watch as a parent if we are following the LORD not to see our children follow the LORD.

Our example is important. We have to be those who follow the LORD in a loving manner, so that our children see that this example is good. Too often we can be too strict and cause them to rebel. Or we can be too lenient and they don’t want have anything to do with the LORD.

If you are the firstborn remember that you set the example for the rest of the siblings. This can be true in the church as well. The firstborn can set the example of what a believer should look like to the other siblings.

CHALLENGE: Good examples are necessary in every family.

: 17      And the sons of Jechoniah, Assir, Salathiel his son, (1121 “son” [ben] means a male human offspring, grandson, member of a people, descendant, or child)

DEVOTION:  This is where we left off in the book of II Kings. The children of Judah were taken captive by the Babylonians because they had allowed their nation to go into false worship and the LORD had to send judgment. HE gave many reasons for the judgment but the main was worshiping of false gods.

Another reason was that those who preached against the false gods of the nation were being killed by the kings. They were shedding innocent blood, so that, they could keep worshiping their false gods without someone telling them they were sinning. They didn’t want to hear the messengers of God. Killing was an easy way to silence the voices they didn’t want to hear.

Today we have individual who are faithful to the LORD and HIS word the Bible and most of the people in the world don’t want to hear what the LORD has to say about their lifestyle. So they want to have them silenced.

How to they silence them? In our country they try to take away their freedom of speech. They don’t want anyone saying anything bad about the lifestyles of people who have a choice regarding how they want to life even if it is against the standard set down by God in HIS Word.

There is another problem. Denomination after denomination is compromising with the thinking of the land rather than the teaching of the word of God. False gods are in control of their thinking and this is the same thing that brought down the nation of Judah.

God has to judge a nation that will not honor HIM as they started out to do at the founding of the nation. Each nation that based their laws on the Word of God is starting to fall because they are moving into an area that is dishonoring to the LORD. Europe used to worship the LORD and then those who were there had to move to America because they changed. Now the nations of the world are finding it harder and harder to keep control of their countries because of their move away from the LORD.

The LORD is still in control but we need to pray for those who are faithful to the LORD will be the witness the LORD wants them to be before the captivity comes even here.

CHALLENGE: Where there will be little ability to witness except in jail with others to believe the same the Bible teaches.

QUOTES regarding passage

3:1–9. Though Solomon was the son in the promised line of succession from David (22:9–10), for completeness David’s other sons were included (3:1–9). This list should be compared to 2 Samuel 3:2–5, where one notes correspondence except in the name of the second son by Abigail (see the chart “David’s Family” near 2 Sam. 3:2–5). The chronicler calls him Daniel, while he is Kileab in 2 Samuel 3:3. Though he may have had two names it is obvious that the chronicler is not, here at least, slavishly following 2 Samuel. The names of the six sons born in Hebron (1 Chron. 3:1–4a) are followed by those of David’s nine sons born in Jerusalem (vv. 4b–8; cf. the corresponding list in 2 Sam. 5:14–16). Four of these were sons by Bathsheba (the Heb. has Bathshua, a variant spelling; cf. niv marg.). This is the only place she is mentioned in Chronicles. (For comments on this see the Introduction.) Also Eliphelet (the one in 1 Chron. 3:6) and Nogah (v. 7) are not included in 2 Samuel but are mentioned again in 1 Chronicles 14:4–7 (see comments there). Perhaps the occurrence of two Eliphelets (3:6, 8) means that one died and another, born later, took his name. Perhaps Nogah also had died and 2 Samuel preserves only the names of surviving sons. (Merrill, E. H. (1985). 1 Chronicles. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 594). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Ver. 9. These were all the sons of David, &c.] By his wives: beside the sons of the concubines; who are not reckoned, and how many they were is not known; he had ten concubines at least, 2 Sam. 15:16 and 20:3. And Tamar their sister; not the sister of the sons of the concubines, but of his other sons, and only of Absalom by the mother’s side, of whom see 2 Sam. 13. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 3, p. 6). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

9. Observe, that as the Holy Ghost is only careful to preserve the lineal descent of David’s family in a faithful register, with an eye to Jesus, no mention is made of the names of David’s children by his concubines. (Hawker, R. (2013). Poor Man’s Old Testament Commentary: 1 Kings–Esther (Vol. 3, p. 312). Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software.)

Six sons were born to David during his reign in Hebron. Four are mentioned as the offspring from Bath-shua, another name for Bath-sheba (2 Sam. 11:3). Then follow the names of other nine sons. As the name Elishama appears twice, it has been suggested that one is Elishua (2 Sam. 5:15). Eglah is called David’s wife. Some claim that it is Michal, who became childless after her mockery when David danced before the ark. Then the line of Solomon is traced up to Zedekiah. The usurping Queen Athaliah (2 Kings 11:3) is omitted, for she was not of the house of David. Then follows the list of the sons of Jeconiah. The name “Assir” which follows Jeconiah in verse 17 means “the captive.” “Jeconiah, the captive”, is the proper rendering. His son Salathiel was therefore born in the captivity (Matt. 1:12). Jeconiah was written “childless,” which does not mean that he was to have no sons, but that no son of his should sit upon the throne of David (Jer. 22:30). The son of Salathiel was Zerubbabel (Matt. 1:12; Ezra 3:2, 5:2; Hag. 1:1, 12). It seems that, in some way, the different names as they appear in the Hebrew text were dislocated. The following arrangement has been suggested to remove the difficulty. (Gaebelein, A. C. (2009). The annotated Bible: Joshua to Second Chronicles (Vol. 2, pp. 377–378). Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software.)

FROM MY READING:

(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)

Yalad describes the relationship between God and Israel at other places in the Bible as well. This relationship is especially relevant to the king who typifies the Messiah, the Son whom God “begot” (Ps. 2:7). God also says He “begot” the nation of Israel as a whole (Deut. 32:18). This statement is in noticeable contrast to Moses’ disclaimer that he did not “birth” them (Num. 11:12) and, therefore, does not want to be responsible for them any longer.

The motif that God “gave birth” to Israel is picked up by Jeremiah. In Jer. 31:20, God states that His heart yearns for Ephraim His son (yeled). Ezekiel develops this motif in the form of an allegory, giving the names Aholah and Aholibah to Samaria and Jerusalem respectively, to those whom He “bore” (Ezek. 23:4, 37). (Vine, W. E., Unger, M. F., & White, W., Jr. (1996). Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words. Nashville, TN: T. Nelson.)

MY VIEW OF THE WORLD

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.  1 John 5:13

What is my view of the world when I know for certain that I have eternal life? What is my attitude to the world in which we are all living, the world as we see it in the newspapers? Is that what interests me? What am I anxious to obtain? Or am I more interested in other things’ spiritual things? According to John, Christians are men and women who have come to view the world in an entirely new manner. They see that it is governed by sin. They have come to regard it as a place in which evil forces are at work and whose whole mind is but the working of the spirit of the world. They know that it is something they have to fight, something to withstand, and they realize that unless they do so, they will be defeated by it.

Do I hate the world? A good way of answering is this: The apostle Paul, looking at his surroundings, said, “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). In looking at ‘the things which are seen,’ how much time do I spend in thinking about the Lord God? How much do I think about the glory that is with Him? Which do I meditate upon most the eternal or the worldly?

A Thought to Ponder: How much do I think about the glory that is with God? Which do I meditate upon most the eternal or the worldly? (From
Life in God, pp. 97-98, by Martyn Lloyd-Jones.)

So Right and So Wrong

Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? MATTHEW 7:3

I’m sure you’ve had a disagreement (or more than one!) with each other that turned into a stalemate or brick wall. You didn’t really care if it came to a conclusion. You just wanted a truce. You wanted this thing behind you. You were tired of fighting.

Maybe it started with an argument about the checkbook. Maybe it had something to do with the in-laws. Maybe it was a difference of opinion on a parenting issue. But somewhere along the way, the conflict turned into much more. It took on a life of its own. Now you can hardly stand to be in the same room together.

Well, are you prepared to let reconciliation start with you? Are you ready to give up the notion that you’re mostly right? Deeper still, are you willing to strive to recapture the reality of what your marriage is all about—the transcendent beauty of reflecting God’s love on Earth? I know that you may be thinking, When I’m hurt I don’t care about God’s glory.

I just want to get even.

Don’t be ruled by your emotions. Instead, do it Jesus’ way: Take the log out of your eye. No matter what your spouse has done, no matter how misguided you think he or she has been, the key to real resolution is to start removing your log. Accept full responsibility for your part in this, and place the value of your mate and your relationship above the value of your own pride and your need to be right.

God wants more for you than being able to tolerate each other. He wants you to show forth His glory in the way you honor, love and respect each other.

Remove the logjam. And shoot for something higher. (Moments with You Couples Devotional by Dennis and Barbara Rainey)
