I Samuel 9

Introduction of Saulverses 1-2

Now there was a man of Benjamin – whose name was Kish

the son of Abiel – Bechorath – Aphiah – a Benjamite

a might man of power

And he had a son – whose name was Saul

a choice young man a goodly

And there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person

than he – from his shoulders and upward he was

higher than any of the people

Saul searches for father’s donkeys’verses 3-5

And the asses of Kish Saul’s father were lost

and Kish said to Saul his son

Take now one of the servants with you – and arise

go seek the asses

And he passed through mount Ephraim

and passed through the land of Shalisha

but they found them not

THEN they passed through the land of Shalim

and there they were not – and he passed through the

land of the Benjamites -but they found them not

And when they were come to the land of Zuph

Saul said to his servant that was with him

Come – and let us return

lest my father leave caring for the asses

and take thought for us

Servant tells of man of Godverses 6-10

And he

said to him

BEHOLD now – there is in this city a man of God

and he is an honorable man

all that he says comes surely to pass

                                    now let us go thither

peradventure he can show us

our way that we should go

Then said Saul to his servant

BUT – BEHOLD – IF we go – what shall we bring the man?

FOR the bread is spent in our vessels

and there is not a present to bring to the man of God

                                                What have we?

And the servant answered Saul again

and said

BEHOLD – I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver

that will I give to the man of God – to tell us our way

(Beforetime in Israel – when a man went to inquire of God – thus he spoke

Come – and let us go to the seer

for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer)

THEN said Saul to his servant

Well said – Come – let us go

So they went unto the city where the man of God was

Saul asks for directionsverses 11-13

And as they went up the hill to the city

they found young maidens going out to draw water

And said to them

Is the seer here?

And they answered them

and said

He is – BEHOLD – he is before you – make haste now

for he came today to the city

for there is a sacrifice of the people today

in the high place

As soon as you be come into the city

            you shall straightway find him

before he go up to the high place to eat

for the people will not eat until he come

BECAUSE he does bless the sacrifice

                                                            and afterward they eat

that be bidden

Now therefore get you up

for about this time you shall find him

Samuel coming out of to go to high placeverse 14

And they went up into the city – and when they were come into the city

BEHOLD – Samuel came out against them

for to go up to the high place

Samuel given message of the LORDverses 15-17

Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came

saying

Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the

land of Benjamin – and you shall anoint him to be

captain over MY people Israel

that he may save MY people out of the hand

                              of the Philistines

For I have looked on MY people

BECAUSE their cry is come to ME

And when Samuel saw Saul the LORD

said to him

BEHOLD – the man whom I spoke to you of

this same shall reign over MY people

Saul asks for the seerverse 18

THEN Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate

and said

Tell me – I pray you – where the seer’s house is

Samuel tells him he is the seerverses 19-20

And Samuel answered Saul

and said

I am the seer – go up before me to the high place

for you shall eat with me today

and tomorrow I will let you go

and will tell you all that is in your heart

And as for your asses that were lost three days ago

set not your mind on them – for they are found

And on whom is all the desire of Israel?

Is it not on you – and on all your father’s house?

Saul confusedverse 21

And Saul answered

and said

Am not I a Benjamite

of the smallest of the tribes of Israel?

And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin?

Wherefore then speak you so to me?

Samuel treats Saul with honorverses 22-24

And Samuel took Saul and his servant – and brought them into the parlor

and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden

                        which were about thirty persons

And Samuel said to the cook

Bring the portion which I gave you – of which I said to you

                        Set it by you

And the cook took up the shoulder – and that which was on it

and set it before Saul

And Samuel said

BEHOLD that which is left – set it before you – and eat

for to this time has it been kept for you since I said

                                    I have invited the people

So Saul did eat with Samuel that day

Samuel tells Saul he has a message from Godverses 25-27

And when they were come down from the high place into the city

Samuel communed with Saul on the top of the house

And they arose early – and it came to pass about the spring of the day

that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house

saying

Up – that I may send you away

And Saul arose – and they went out both of them

he and Samuel abroad

and as they were going down to the end of the city

Samuel said to Saul

Bid the servant pass on before us (and he passed on)

BUT stand you still a while

that I may show you the word of God

COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 2        And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. (2896 “goodly” [towb] means good, beautiful, best, better, bountiful, cheerful, or pleasant).

DEVOTION:  The word of God tells us that men look at the outward appearance of a man while God looks on the inward heart. The first king of Israel was one who was a head taller than anyone else. He was a handsome man. He was willing to obey his father. He cared about his father. He knew that if he was to receive counsel of a seer or prophet he had to give him a present.

The first king was humble when he met Samuel. In this historical account of the first king of Israel we find that outward appearance was very important. Saul was a handsome man to look at. He was tall, dark and handsome.

God tells us to look at the inside of people to see what is going on. The only way we can look on the inside is to get to know them very well. Are we getting to know each other the way we should?

Too often we are just passing the time with people without getting to know them. It will take work. Try not to just be friends with those who are tall, dark and handsome! Those who are not beautiful have something to add to our lives.

Note that the LORD had instructed Samuel the day before he met Saul that he was going to meet the first king of Israel. All through the Bible we see that the LORD is well aware of what is happening in the future. HE is Sovereign. HE is working HIS plan in our world. Never fear!!!

CHALLENGE: A humble spirit is one of the characteristics that the LORD looks for in people. However, once a humbler person receives honor, they have to remain humble or there are consequences. Saul started out humble!!!!

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 6        And he said unto him, BEHOLD now, there is in this city a man of God and he is an honorable man; all that he says comes surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can show us our way that we should go.(3513 “honorable” [kabad] means gain glory, to be shown respect, to be shown esteem, to get oneself glory, be recognized as weighty, or behave with dignity)

DEVOTION:  The reputation of Samuel was great. Even this servant knew where he was and that he was serving the LORD. He also knew that whatever he said came to pass. He had walked with the LORD for many years and had proved his right of answering question that were brought to him.

So the servant advised Saul to ask him about the animals that were missing Saul agreed once he knew that he had money to give for the advice. He didn’t want to go empty handed.

Today we are to have individuals who are close to the LORD. They are worthy of our respect because of their closeness to God. When they give advice we should be willing to listen.

None of them will have the same relationship that Samuel had with the LORD. We have more answers in the Word of God but most people are ignorant of the Word of God by choice.

There are still some who are listening to the Word of God and the Holy Spirit that can give us what the LORD wants us to hear regarding our responsibility to the LORD. Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit we can have discernment regarding who to listen to and who not to listen to in our world.

Who are you listening to on a regular basis? Is it a special author of books? Is it a special preacher on television or radio? Is it a man who spends his time in the presence of the LORD? We need to use the discernment the LORD has given us to know who to listen to because there are so many voices out there that can lead us away from the LORD and we not realize it.

Many denominations are going away from the LORD instead of closer to the LORD. Many bibles that are sold in the Christian book stores are not translated according to the manuscripts we have from ancient times. They are trying to retranslate according to the culture to cause us to accept compromise regarding God’s standards for a believer.

CHALLENGE: Compare what you are reading and listening to with only good sources. Ask the LORD for discernment in both areas.

: 9        (Before time in Israel when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spoke, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer) (1875 “inquire” [darash] means to seek with care, investigate, to address a question to and expect an answer from, examine, look for, to resort to, or to consult)

DEVOTION:  During different time periods in the history of Israel we find that the people looked for someone who could tell them what the LORD wanted them to do. Here we find Saul and his servant going to a Prophet or Seer to find out what the LORD wanted them to know.

Saul and his servant knew that there was a Seer in the area that had a special relationship to the LORD and they wanted to be able to find the donkeys that Saul’s father had lost. It was a genuine need for them.

God used men in the past who could tell others what the LORD wanted them to know. Here was an example of the LORD allowing HIMSELF to answer direct questions with a direct revelation from HIM.

This is not what we have today. We can go to the LORD in prayer and ask HIM what we should do in a given situation and we can receive an answer through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. HE sometimes uses a man of God who has a close relationship with HIM to give advice to others regarding what they should do in a given situation. The LORD gives individuals wisdom that comes from their personal relationship with HIM through their ministry of prayer and the study of the Bible.

We need to make sure that we find someone who is genuinely close to the LORD and will give us good Biblical advice regarding the question we might have. This is not always easy but the LORD has given us HIS Holy Spirit to give us instructions through the Bible, good Biblical man who want to serve the LORD properly and even our parents.

Our relationship to the LORD depends on our staying close to the LORD through our times with HIM in the Word of God, prayer and confession.

CHALLENGE: Any problem we have can be answered by the LORD through a man of God that is truly close to the LORD. Stay close to the LORD through confession of sin and commitment to HIS standards.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 15      Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying

: 16      Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be captain over MY people Israel, that he may save MY people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked on MY people, because their cry is come to ME. (3467 “save” [yasha] means deliver, help, preserve, rescue, to save form moral troubles, or to give victory to)

DEVOTION:  The LORD had a good communication with Samuel regarding the new king of Israel. HE told Samuel about Saul the day before they met. HE knew exactly what time they would meet. HE knew the tribe Saul was from.

Samuel was to anoint him as the next leader of the children of Israel. HE knew the future regarding what Saul would do as king. HE had heard the people and listened to their need. Every detail of past and present is available to the LORD. HE is not surprised by what is going to happen in the future. HE knows the future. HE not only knows the future of Saul but HE knows our future. HE has a plan for our life. HE gives us hope.

Some days we wonder that the LORD is doing and wish HE would send an angel to give us insight into our future. We are not good at waiting to see what is going to happen next.

Saul was confused but the LORD was not. Samuel was given enough information to know what to do and he did it. We are given enough information as we continue to grow in the LORD to know what to do and how to do it with HIS help.

The LORD is still full of mercy toward HIS people and once we genuinely believe HE will hear our cry. Do you believe that HE genuinely cares about you and your future?

CHALLENGE: There are many examples of the LORD sending someone to care for HIS people when they need someone. HE does care for HIS people.

: 21      And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Wherefore then speak you so to me? (1696 “speak” [dabar] mean say, commune, pronounce, to express in speech, to promise, converse, or warn)

DEVOTION:  When Saul started out in his relationship with Samuel, he was a very humble man. He didn’t understand what was happening and didn’t think he deserved to be a king over Israel.

He gave excuses, why he should not be king. He told Samuel what he already knew but thought it would change Samuel’s mind regarding his choice to be king.

Saul didn’t really understand that the LORD had chosen him and Samuel was just obeying the LORD.

We need to realize that the LORD looks at the heart of each individual and knows what is going to happen in the future. HE knows what type of king Saul was going to be and how he was going to fail because pride entered his life but at this point in Saul’s life, he was willing to be used of the LORD.

Excuses are what most of us are good at when it comes to serving the LORD. We need to stop making excuses and see what open doors the LORD allows in our life and go through them.

What does the LORD want you and I to do for HIM now? Each day we have to allow HIM to lead us in the right direction. We need to go through an open door. It can be to witness to someone. It can be to get some project down that we need to work on.

CHALLLENGE:  Each of us knows what needs to happen in our days. Let the Holy Spirit direct your steps.

QUOTES regarding passage

25–27 After what must have been a sumptuous if solemn meal, eaten in a house of worship on a sacred site, Samuel, Saul, and Saul’s servant retired to Ramah and conversed for awhile on the “roof” of Samuel’s house (v.25). Fateful events, also with profound implications for monarchical rule, would later take place on the “roof” of David’s palace (2 Sam 11:2; 16:22). But for now, Samuel was preparing Saul for his divine commissioning as ruler of Israel. Sleeping overnight on the roof of a house (v.26) is a common practice even today in the Middle East. In ancient times wealthy householders occasionally constructed a small bedroom on the roof to provide comfort, privacy, and protection for their guests (2 Kings 4:10).

The following morning Samuel told Saul to dismiss his servant temporarily (v.27; see 10:14). Saul himself, however, was to stay briefly at Ramah (10:2) to receive a communication from God (v.27) and to be anointed leader over the Lord’s inheritance (10:1). (Youngblood, R. F. (1992). 1, 2 Samuel. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel (Vol. 3, p. 623). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.)

Samuel then invited Saul to sit with him as guest of honor at the sacrificial feast (vv. 22–24) and then to spend the night in his home in the town below. Next morning Samuel detained him so that he might communicate with him alone (with Saul’s servant going on ahead) the revelation of God about his selection as king (vv. 25–27). (Merrill, E. H. (1985). 1 Samuel. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 441). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Note. 27 Samuel made sure that it would be a private anointing; not even his servant knew the secret. The first anointing of David was also private (16:1–13). In both cases, their reigns did not actually begin until a public ceremony had been held. (Payne, D. F. (1994). 1 and 2 Samuel. In D. A. Carson, R. T. France, J. A. Motyer, & G. J. Wenham (Eds.), New Bible commentary: 21st century edition (4th ed., p. 306). Leicester, England; Downers Grove, IL: Inter-Varsity Press.)

9:27 the word of God. Special revelation from God, given to Samuel and intended for Saul. (MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (2006). The MacArthur study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (1 Sa 9:27). Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers.)

Ver. 27. And as they were going down to the end of the city, &c.] That end of it that led the way to the place where Saul was going. As this city was built on an hill, going to the end of it was a declivity, a descent: Samuel said to Saul, bid the servant pass on before us; being another man’s servant, he did not choose of himself to bid him go on, but desired his master to order him to go before them, that he might not hear what Samuel had to say to Saul, or see what he did unto him; for as the choice of Saul to be king was to be declared by lot, as coming from the Lord, all those precautions were taken of rising early, and going abroad, and sending the servant before them, that it might not be thought that Samuel did this of himself: and he passed on; his master bidding him: but stand thou still a while; that he might hear the better, and more attentively than in walking; such a posture was most fitting also for what was to be done, anointing him with oil: that I may shew thee the word of God: tell him more of the mind of God concerning his being king, and declare more fully the word, will, and decree of God about that matter, by an action which would put it out of all doubt that he was the man God designed to be king, as in the following chapter. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 2, p. 458). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

FROM MY READING:

(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)

CLAIMS OF DIVINITY

…the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father….
John 1:18
The Bible makes many claims to the effect that Christ is divine; it asserts and teaches His divinity or, still more accurately, His deity. The first evidence is that certain names are ascribed to Him, each of which clearly implies His deity. Here are some of them. He is described as the “Son of God” forty times; He is referred to as “his Son” (God’s Son); God refers to Him audibly as “my Son.” So there, in various forms, is that title “Son,” “Son of God.”
Then five times He is also referred to as the “only begotten Son of God.” You find it in John 1:18 (“…the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father”), and there are many others. A notable one is the Parable of the Wicked Husbandman, when God says, “They will reverence my son” (Matthew 21:37). The teaching there is perfectly clear–the words are uttered by our Lord Himself.
He is described in Revelation 1 as “the first and the last,” and in the same chapter as “the Alpha and Omega,” the beginning and the end. These are obviously terms of deity; there is nothing before the beginning and nothing after the end. Then Peter, preaching in Jerusalem–you will find it recorded in Acts 3:14–refers to Him as “the Holy One”: “But ye denied the Holy One and the Just.” Again, these are terms of deity.
Then He is actually referred to as “God.” Thomas says, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). He is also described as “Emmanuel…God with us” in Matthew 1:23; and there is a most remarkable statement in Titus 2:13 where He is referred to as our “great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” So, there you have a number of names that are ascribed to Him, all of which are divine names.
A Thought to Ponder: Certain names are ascribed to Him, each of which clearly implies His deity. (From God the Father, God the Son, pp. 266-267. By Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

Numbers 13

The Lord commands Moses to send spies into the land of Canaan.

INSIGHT

One of the most common mistakes we make during the tough times in life is to place our eyes on circumstances rather than on the promises of God. The Lord promises Israel that He will lead them into the Promised Land and defeat the armies that are living there. He even promises to send in swarms of hornets to drive out the armies, so Israel won’t even have to fight. But one look at the giants, and every promise is forgotten. One glimpse of the armies, and “God is not enough.”

The New Testament is full of promises for us. We must keep our eyes on the promises.

                        (Quiet Walk)

Farming is difficult in areas that lack fresh water. To help solve this problem, the Seawater Greenhouse company has created something new: “cooling houses” in Somaliland, Africa, and other countries with similar climates. Cooling houses use solar pumps to drizzle saltwater over walls made of corrugated cardboard. As the water moves down each panel, it leaves its salt behind. Much of the remaining fresh water evaporates inside the structure, which becomes a humid place where fruit and vegetable crops can flourish.

Through the prophet Isaiah, God promised to do a “new thing” as He provided “streams in the wasteland” for ancient Israel (Isaiah 43:19). This new thing contrasted with the old thing He had done to rescue His people from the Egyptian army. Remember the Red Sea account? God wanted His people to recall the past but not let it overshadow His current involvement in their lives (v. 18). He said, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness” (v. 19).

While looking to the past can bolster our faith in God’s provision, living in the past can blind us to all the fresh work of God’s Spirit today. We can ask God to show us how He’s currently moving—helping, remaking, and sustaining His people. May this awareness prompt us to partner with Him to meet the needs of others, both near and far.

THE HOLY SPIRIT REVEALS THE TEACHING OF CHRIST

When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. John 16:13
The Holy Spirit not only reveals the person and the work of Christ—He also reveals the teaching of Christ. Our Lord said to the disciples before He left them, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth” (John 16:12-13). That is, “He will remind you of the things I have said and that you cannot grasp now, and He will make them plain to you.”
So if you are in trouble about the understanding of the Gospel, ask God to give you His Spirit in all His fullness, and you will begin to understand. The fatal thing in these matters is to bring your natural intellect to bear upon them: “The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God…neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14).
Read 1 Corinthians 2, and understand that these things are in a different realm, they belong to a different order, and the only way to understand the teaching of the New Testament about Christ’s personal work and teaching is to have the eyes of your understanding enlightened by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, if you are in trouble, do not waste your time trying to read books of philosophy about these matters; do not try to grasp them with the natural intellect, for that is impossible. We are dealing with miracles. We are in the realm of the supernatural and the spiritual, and the only hope for us is that the Holy Spirit will come with that unction, with His eye salve, to anoint our eyes so that they will be opened to the blessed truth.
A Thought to Ponder: We are in the realm of the supernatural and the spiritual, and the only hope for us is the Holy Spirit.
(From Saved in Eternity, pp. 90-91, by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

Confirmation of the Gospel
“Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.” (Philippians 1:7)
The gospel, of course, embraces all the truths concerning the person and work of Jesus Christ, from creation to consummation. Since these truths have been under Satanic attack throughout all the ages, it is vital that the gospel both be defended against its enemies and confirmed in the hearts and minds of its friends.
The word for “defense” (Greek apologia) is the same as “answer” in 1 Peter 3:15, where we are commanded to “be ready always to give an answer…a reason of the hope that is in you.” The word for “confirmation,” on the other hand, is essentially the same as “established,” or “stabilized,” as in Colossians 2:7: “Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith.” Thus, the saving gospel of Christ—from its foundation in genuine creationism to its consummation in His coming kingdom with its central focus on the crucifixion and resurrection—is both to be defended against false teaching and established as truth. These two aspects correspond in general to apologetics in defending the faith and Christian evidences in establishing the faith.
This is not merely a job for certain theological or scientific specialists, however. All believers need to be “partakers” of this grace (literally “convinced co-participants”). Real “partakers” do not just go along for the ride but are firmly committed and fully comprehending supporters. However, both those who lead out in such a work, as well as those who are “partakers,” are exhorted to do so in grace! “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man” (Colossians 4:6).
