COMMENTARY:
DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers
: 12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. (1377 “persecution” [dioko] means chase, follow after, press toward, put to flight, drive away, or to be mistreated)
DEVOTION: Paul gives a long description of what the end times are going to look like. In his description he tells of how people are going to act toward one another. He tells of how false teachers will lead people astray. He informs Timothy that people will be looking for truth but will not be able to find it. They will act religious but not Christian. Their minds will be corrupt. He gives an example of how Moses was confronted by the sorcerers of Pharaoh, who turned their rods into snakes also. Even though their snakes were eaten by Moses’ snake Pharaoh would not listen to Moses. It took ten plagues to finally let the people leave Egypt for the Promised Land.
As we review the list we find that they are all true today. The liberal world says that man is getting better and better. They say that education is all that is needed. They say that we just need to get rid of all those religious rules and we will be able to live a better life. It is all a lie. Our world is not getting better and better.
Christians stand up against the crowd. Paul did it in his day and they mistreated him. If we stand up against the crowd we will be mistreated also. In this world we are going to be mistreated and misunderstood as we stand for the LORD. That is what Paul told Timothy would happen and it is happening and has happened for over two thousand years. The LORD is definitely long-suffering. We have to be too.
Sometimes we do things wrong, but sometimes we do everything right and still find ourselves mistreated for Christ’s sake. We have to take it as being according to the LORD’S will for our growth. It is hard, but nothing happens that HE doesn’t allow to come our way. We might never understand how HE works but HE does, and that is all that counts.
There are people who say they are Christians and are not being chased because of their beliefs. If they are witnessing for the LORD there will be mistreatment. People love to make fun of Christianity in person and on the television and in the news.
This group of people needs to reexamine their faith. If we are genuine followers of Christ there are going to be challenges in our lives to cause us to wonder if they should not share their faith with others. If they are not willing to witness then maybe they have nothing to share.
CHALLENGE: Get good Biblical teaching and then share it with others. Some will reject it, but others will listen. Don’t stop manifesting your faith in JESUS CHRIST. The coming of the LORD is nearer now than in Paul’s day.
: 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them. (3129 “learned” [manthano] means 1 to learn, be appraised. 1a to increase one’s knowledge, to be increased in knowledge. 1b to hear, be informed. 1c to learn by use and practice. 1c1 to be in the habit of, accustomed to. [Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship)
DEVOTION: Remember the day that you graduated? It may have been from high school or it may have been from college. For some, it may even have been graduating from seminary. You realized that you no longer had to go to classes, study, or take tests. Your education was over (or so you thought!).
There is a sense in which we are to take the learning which we have acquired early in our lives and use it throughout our lives. That is what is called “wisdom” throughout the Bible, and corresponds to the ability to apply Biblical principles to daily living. Likewise, we apply the skills we have learned through our schooling to our everyday jobs.
However, one of the major goals of going to school is to teach us how to learn. There is a sense in which all of us should be lifelong learners. In other words, our schooling was to teach us to think in a specific way, to set up a grid for our thoughts. As life goes on, we are supposed to continue that learning. For example, we are supposed to continue to read the Bible and pray throughout our lives, since we will continue to learn more about God’s will every day if we do so.
The question is not whether or not we are learning as we grow older, but how we are going about it. The world definitely wants to teach us its way of thinking in order to conform us to its mold. So we are learning things every time we watch television, for example. On the other hand, we are supposed to spend time with God in His Word as we read, hear, study, memorize, and meditate upon it. That is the only true way of learning, and we are to continue learn about our calling to follow Christ. Paul calls Timothy’s attention that we need to pay as much attention to the source of our “knowledge” (from whom we learned things) as we do to what we have learned.
CHALLENGE: God’s intention is that we keep on learning all through our lives. We need to make it a priority to keep growing in our knowledge of Him. Take time to take inventory in your life today. Ask God to show you which part of His Word He wants you to start committing to memory today. (MW)
DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers
: 15 And that from a child you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (4679 “wise” [sophizo] means teach, to have understanding, give wisdom, or instruct)
DEVOTION: Paul is writing to Timothy about his childhood. In his childhood Timothy was instructed by his mother and grandmother in the truths of the Word of God. It is thought that his father was Greek and not a believer.
His mother and grandmother only had the Old Testament to instruct him in regarding who God was and what HIS plan was for the world. They understood that God had planned for a Messiah to come. They had told him all about the Messiah and what HE was going to do.
With these instructions in his mind he met Paul who gave him a greater understanding of the Word of God since the Old Testament was written. He instructed him in that fact that Jesus Christ was the Messiah. He accepted this teaching and became a follower of Jesus.
Once he was a disciple of Jesus under the ministry of Paul he learned that he was given the gift of pastor/teacher. He had the laying on of hands of the disciples. He was the leader of the church of Ephesus at this time as they were going through many troubles.
Paul went back to the basics with the instruction regarding all that was necessary for salvation was faith in Jesus Christ. Once that took place the rest came through a willingness to listen to the teachings of the Word of God and the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Timothy faced real trials in which he needed help. Paul was instructing him in the fact that help was available for the asking and learning.
CHALLENGE: Our faith needs to grow. It grows through our understanding of who Christ is and what HE has made available to us today. Such knowledge is available. What are you doing with it?
DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers
: 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. (2315 “inspiration” [theopneustos] means the contents of Scripture, divinely inspired, produced by the Spirit of God, or God breathed)
DEVOTION: The Bible is the guidebook to all those who claim Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. The Bible is the Word of God. The Bible leads us to a better understanding of Jesus Christ.
We are followers of Jesus Christ. The better we know HIM the better we can serve HIM properly. HE has given us a love letter to us. HE wants us to understand what has happened in the beginning according to HIM.
HE is the Creator of the Universe. HE did it in six twenty-four hour periods. HIS creation was perfect. HE created man and woman in an innocent state. They made a choice that HE knew they would. Their choice was to disobey. HE didn’t cause them to disobey but HE knew they were selfish and lazy in their attitude toward HIS instructions.
Today we follow in their footsteps even after we become believers. We need HIS special instructions to keep us going back to HIM for a proper walk with HIM. It is a daily battle with our old nature and our world and the enemy Satan.
God has given us a NEW nature that can help us live a life that is pleasing to HIM. HIS instructions are given to teach us right from wrong. There is absolute truth. There is right and wrong. No matter what our teachers and some of our preachers are saying.
CHALLENGE: Learn to follow Christ through HIS special instructions in the Bible.
: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished to all good works. (739 “perfect” [artios] means fitted, complete, capable, proficient, or qualified)
DEVOTION: Paul completes the statement regarding those who are willing to obey the teachings of the Word of God. The Bible gives us all we need to understand what is expected of us in our daily walk with the LORD. The Holy Spirit indwells us the minute we become a believer. We are filled with the Holy Spirit until we chose to sin. Then we have to confess our sin and God is faithful and just to forgive our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We don’t lose our salvation but our personal fellowship with the LORD. It is restored after confession. If a true believer continues to sin without confessing then the LORD can send weakness, sickness and even pre-mature death into the life of that individual. This only happens to Christians who are out of tune with the LORD.
However, some believers might have weakness or sickness that is not part of this judgment. We should not be the one to condemn those who show these two things in their life.
If a believer is working at maturing in the faith it can be done through a dedication to prayer, Bible study and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. When this is happening then the believer will be perfect or mature. He will be equipped to do every good work. This should be our goal each day.
CHALLENGE: Are we looking to the LORD for maturity or are we ones that have settled on our “lees” to wait for HIS return?

QUOTES regarding passage
3:13 This statement gives balance and perspective to the last by adding (δέ) the downward progress of “evil people and imposters” (cf. similarly v. 9). With πονηροὶ ἄνθρωποι, “evil people,” Paul is probably referring again to mankind in this age (οἱ ἄνθρωποι, v. 2), using here the comprehensive adjective πονηροί in the ethical sense of that which is “wicked or evil” (cf. Mt. 12:35; Lk. 6:45; and especially 2 Thes. 3:2).
In vv. 2ff. Paul referred to some of wicked mankind as those who have a form of religion (v. 5) and as those who are false religious teachers (v. 6). Here also he appears to refer to the same category of people with γόητες** (a NT hapax). In this understanding καί has somewhat of an explanatory force joining the more specific γόητες to the more general πονηροὶ ἄνθρωποι (Ellicott). γόης means generally “sorcerer” but is probably used here in the sense of “swindler, cheat” or “imposter” (see BAGD for extrabiblical references; Paul uses it perhaps because Moses’ opponents [v. 8] are designated by similar terms in Ex. 7:11). Whatever word may be used to render this Greek term, the intended meaning is clarified by the fact that they are those who “deceive” (πλανῶντες). Thus G. Delling says that γόης is “one who entices to impious action by apparently pious words” (TDNT I, 737f. in a helpful article).
Paul says that such people will “proceed” or “progress” (προκόψουσιν, in the PE* see 2:16; 3:9) ἐπὶ τὸ χεῖρον, literally “to the worse” (χεῖρον is a comparative of κακός). Their tactics and procedures will get worse and worse, as the first qualifying participle, πλανῶντες (active), indicates. That participle describes them as “deceiving” or “misleading” others (cf. Delling’s comment, quoted above; see again vv. 6–7 and the other uses of the verb in Pl.*: 1 Cor. 6:9; 15:22; Gal. 6:7; Tit. 3:3).
The second participle, πλανώμενοι, describes these people either as self-deceived (middle) or as deceived by someone else (passive). The latter is most likely since Paul has already spoken about how the devil captures people (2:26) and also because in the only PE use of the cognate adjective in a context describing false teaching Paul speaks of “deceitful spirits” (πνεύμασιν πλάνοις) working “by means of the hypocrisy of liars” (1 Tim. 4:1–2). These people are thus deceived by the evil one and his evil spirits so that they believe their own deceptive message (cf. Rom. 1:21–25).
The statements that the false teachers “will progress to worse” and that “they will not make further progress” (v. 9) show that Paul can look at their progress from two entirely different perspectives. This verse recognizes that evil becomes intensively worse as time goes on. The other recognizes that the teaching of evil does not necessarily capture a wider audience as it becomes more intense and therefore does not become more extensive as it becomes more intensive. (Knight, G. W. (1992). The Pastoral Epistles: a commentary on the Greek text (pp. 441–442). Grand Rapids, MI; Carlisle, England: W.B. Eerdmans; Paternoster Press.)
12, 13 Paul was not alone in his sufferings. He declares that “everyone who wants [thelontes, ‘is willing’] to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” Meanwhile, “evil men and imposters will go from bad to worse”—literally, “will make advance [prokopsousin] toward the worse.” The Greek word for “impostors” is goes (only here in the NT), which originally meant “a wailer, howler,” and then “a juggler, enchanter”—“because incantations used to be uttered in a kind of howl”—and so finally “a deceiver, impostor” (Thayer, p. 120). BAG gives “swindler, cheat.” Such men are “deceiving and being deceived.” Having been deceived by false teachers, they are now deceiving others. (Earle, R. (1981). 2 Timothy. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Ephesians through Philemon (Vol. 11, p. 409). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.)
Impostors (γοητες [goētes]). Old word from wailers (γοαω [goaō], to bewail), professional mourners, deceivers, jugglers. Here only in the N. T. Modern impostors know all the tricks of the trade. Shall wax worse and worse (προκοψουσιν ἐπι το χειρον [prokopsousin epi to cheiron]). “Shall cut forward to the worse stage.” See 2:16 for προκοπτω [prokoptō]. Χειρον [Cheiron] is comparative of κακος [kakos], “to the worse than now.” Deceiving and being deceived (πλανωντες και πλανωμενοι [planōntes kai planōmenoi]). Present active and present passive participles of πλαναω [planaō]. The tragedy of it all is that these seducers are able to deceive others as well as themselves. (Robertson, A. T. (1933). Word Pictures in the New Testament (2 Ti 3:13). Nashville, TN: Broadman Press.)
3:12–13. It was important for Timothy, as for all Christians, to realize that persecution awaits everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ (cf. John 15:18–21)—hence Paul’s reminder of his own past experience. Yet with the last days again in mind Paul wrote that Timothy could actually expect the situation to get worse and the pressure to intensify. False teaching would increase as evil men and impostors (lit., “magicians,” but here with the connotation of “charlatans”) go from bad to worse (lit., “advance further”), deceiving and being deceived. Error feeds on itself. (Litfin, A. D. (1985). 2 Timothy. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 2, p. 757). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)
He trusts his Commanding Officer (vv. 11–13). This “faithful saying” is probably part of an early statement of faith recited by believers. (For other “faithful sayings” in the pastoral letters, see 1 Tim. 1:15; 4:9; and Titus 3:8.) It is faith in Jesus Christ that gives us victory (1 John 5:4). We do not fear the enemies, for He has already conquered them. Through our identification with Christ in death, burial, and resurrection, we have won the victory (see Rom. 6).
What a pair of paradoxes! Death leads to life! Suffering leads to reigning in glory! We have nothing to fear! The important thing is that we not “disown” our Lord; for if we disown Him here, He will disown us before the Father (Matt. 10:33). In that great “roll call” in glory, when the “medals” are given out, we will lose our reward if we disown His name.
But Paul makes it clear (2 Tim. 2:13) that even our own doubt and unbelief cannot change Him: “He abideth faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” We do not put faith in our faith or in our feelings because they will change and fail. We put our faith in Christ. The great missionary, J. Hudson Taylor, often said, “It is not by trying to be faithful, but in looking to the Faithful One, that we win the victory.” (Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 2, p. 245). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)
3:13 All the dangerous movements of the false teachers (cf. vv. 1–9) will become increasingly more successful until Christ comes. Cf. 2Th 2:11. (MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (2006). The MacArthur study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (2 Ti 3:13). Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers.)
Ver. 13. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, &c.] By evil men are meant, not sinful men in common, as all are by nature and practice; nor only open profane sinners, but rather wicked men under a form of godliness, as before; and who are full of wickedness and malice against truly godly persons, even as the devil himself, of whom the same word is used, when he is called the wicked one; and this is a reason why true professors of religion must expect persecution, seeing as there ever were, so there ever will be such sort of men, who will not grow better, but worse and worse. The word for seducers, signifies sorcerers, enchanters, a sort of jugglers; and as the other, it well suits with the ecclesiastics of the church of Rome, who pretend to miracles, and do lying wonders, and by their sorceries deceive all nations, Rev. 18:23 and these shall wax worse and worse; in principle and in practice, in ungodliness, and in error, in wickedness and malice against the saints, and in the arts of deceiving; so the church of Rome is never to be expected to be better, but worse; at the time of the fall of Babylon she will be an habitation of devils, the hold of every foul spirit, and the cage of every unclean and hateful bird, Rev. 18:2 deceiving; not God, but themselves and others, even all nations, excepting the elect of God; which they do by their good words and fair speeches, and by their shew of devotion and religion, and by their pretended miracles and lying wonders: and deceived by the old serpent, the devil, under whose power and influence they are, in whose snare they are taken, and by whom they are led captive, and will at last share the same fate with himself, and be cast into the same lake of fire and brimstone. (Gill, J. (1809). An Exposition of the New Testament (Vol. 3, p. 336). London: Mathews and Leigh.)
FROM MY READING:
(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)
Of the13 percent of Americans who claim to be atheist or agnostic, one in five prays daily.
So why are we so often ambivalent about the notion of God talking to us? One recalls Lily Tomlin’s line n the play The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe: “Why is it that when we speak to God we are said to be praying, but when God speaks to us we are said to be schizophrenic?” Why should God’s end of the line be equipped with a receiver but no mouthpiece? (p. 143, The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg)
33.261 θεόπνευστος, ον: to a communication which has been inspired by God—‘inspired by God, divinely inspired.’ πᾶσα γραφὴ θεόπνευστος καὶ ὠφέλιμος πρὸς διδασκαλίαν ‘every Scripture divinely inspired and useful for teaching’ or ‘all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching’ 2 Tm 3:16. In a number of languages it is difficult to find an appropriate term to render ‘inspired.’ In some instances ‘Scripture inspired by God’ is rendered as ‘Scripture, the writer of which was influenced by God’ or ‘… guided by God.’ It is important, however, to avoid an expression which will mean only ‘dictated by God.’ (Louw, J. P., & Nida, E. A. (1996). Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament: based on semantic domains (electronic ed. of the 2nd edition., Vol. 1, p. 417). New York: United Bible Societies.)
Ann M writes (PA): Good advice from a respiratory therapist!
Thank you Brian Aune CORONA Common Sense
Since they are calling on Respiratory therapist to help fight the Corona virus, and I am a retired one, too old to work in a hospital setting. I’m gonna share some common sense wisdom with those that have the virus and trying to stay home. If my advice is followed as given you will improve your chances of not ending up in the hospital on a ventilator. This applies to the otherwise generally healthy population, so use discretion. 1. Only high temperatures kill a virus, so let your fever run high. Tylenol, Advil. Motrin, Ibuprofen etc. will bring your fever down allowing the virus to live longer. They are saying that ibuprophen, advil etc will actually exacerbate the virus. Use common sense and don’t let fever go over 103 or 104 if you got the guts. If it gets higher than that take your tylenol, not ibuprophen or advil to keep it regulated. It helps to keep house warm and cover up with
blankets so body does not have to work so hard to generate the heat. It usually takes about 3 days of this to break the fever. 2. The body is going to dehydrate with the elevated temperature so you must rehydrate yourself regulaly, whether you like it or not. Gatorade with real sugar, or pedialyte with real sugar for kids, works well. Why the sugar? Sugar will give your body back the energy it is using up to create the fever. The electrolytes and fluid you are losing will also be replenished by the Gatorade. If you don’t do this and end up in the hospital they will start an IV and give you D5W (sugar water) and Normal Saline to replenish electrolytes. Gatorade is much cheaper, pain free, and comes in an assortment of flavors 3. You must keep your lungs moist. Best done by taking long steamy showers on a regular basis, if your wheezing or congested use a real minty toothpaste and brush
your teeth while taking the steamy shower and deep breath through your mouth. This will provide some bronchial dialation and help loosen the phlegm. Force your self to cough into a wet wash cloth pressed firmly over your mouth and nose, which will cause greater pressure in your lungs forcing them to expand more and break loose more of the congestion. 4. Eat healthy and regularly. Gotta keep your strength up. 5. Once the fever breaks, start moving around to get the body back in shape and blood circulating. 6. Deep breath on a regular basis, even when it hurts. If you don’t it becomes easy to develope pneumonia. Pursed lip breathing really helps. That’s breathing in deep and slow then exhaling through tight lips as if your blowing out a candle, blow until you have completely emptied your lungs and you will be able to breath in an even deeper breath. This helps keep lungs expanded as well
as increase your oxygen level. 7. Remember that every medication you take is merely relieving the symptoms, not making you well. 8. If your still dying go to ER.
I’ve been doing these things for myself and my family for over 40 years and kept them out of the hospital, all are healthy and still living today.
Thank you all for sharing. We gotta help one another.
Violet writes (PA) Doctors are reporting they now understand the behavior of the COVID 19 virus due to autopsies that they have carried out. This virus is characterized by obstructing respiratory pathways with thick mucus that solidifies and blocks the airways and lungs. So they have discovered that in order to apply a medicine you have to open and unblock these airways so that the treatment can be used to take effect however all of this takes a number of days. Their recommendations for what you can do to safeguard yourself are …
1) Drink lots of hot liquids – coffees, soups, teas, warm water. In addition take a sip of warm water every 20 minutes bc this keeps your mouth moist and washes any of the virus that’s entered your mouth into your stomach where your gastric juices will neutralize it before it can get to the lungs.
2) Gargle with an antiseptic and warm water like vinegar or salt or lemon every day if possible
3) The virus attaches itself to hair and clothes. And detergent or soap kills it but you must take bath or shower when you get in from the street. Avoid sitting down in your home and go straight to the shower. If you cannot wash your clothes daily, hang them in sunlight which also helps to neutralize the virus
4) Wash metallic surfaces very carefully bc the virus can stay viable on these for up to 9 days. Take note and be vigilant about touching hand rails, door knobs, etc. and keep these clean in home home
5) Don’t smoke
6) Wash your hands every 20 minutes with any soap that foams and do this for 20 seconds
7) Eat fruits and vegetables. Try to elevate your zinc levelS
8)Animals do not spread the virus to people. Its a person to person transmission.
9)Try to avoid getting the common flu as this already weakens your system and try to avoid eating and drinking any cold things.
10) If you feel any discomfort in your throat or a sore throat coming on, attack it immediately using the above methods. The virus enters the system through the throat but will sit in the throat for 3-4 days before it passes into your lungs.
In addition …
Experts suggest doing this simple verification every morning: Breathe in deeply and hold your breath for 10 seconds. If this can be done without coughing, without difficulty, this shows that there is no fibrosis in the lungs, indicating the absence of infection. It is recommended to do this control every morning to help detect infection.
