ISAIAH 49

Isaiah explains Messiah’s call of the LORD        verse 1- 3

Listen – O isles – to me

and hearken – you people – from far

The LORD has called ME from the womb

from the bowels of MY mother has HE

made mention of MY name

and HE has made MY mouth

like a sharp sword

in the shadow of HIS hand has HE hid ME

and made ME a polished shaft

in HIS quiver has HE hid ME

AND said to ME

You are MY servant – O Israel – in whom I will be glorified

Israel called servant of the LORD                       verse 4

THEN I said

I have labored in vain

I have spent my strength for nought

and in vain

YET surely my judgment is with the LORD

and my work with my God

Messiah is called from the womb                        verse 5- 6

AND now says the LORD that FORMED ME from the WOMB

to be HIS servant – to bring Jacob again to HIM

                        THOUGH Israel be not gathered

YET shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD

and MY God shall be MY strength

AND HE said

It is a light thing that YOU should be MY servant

to raise up the tribes of Jacob

and to restore the preserved of Israel

I will also give YOU for a light to the Gentiles

that YOU may be MY salvation to the

end of the earth

Messiah will be despised                                      verse 7

Thus says the LORD – the REDEEMER of Israel

and HIS Holy One

                        to HIM whom man despises

to HIM whom the nation abhors

                        to a servant of rulers

Kings shall see and arise – princes shall worship

BECAUSE of the LORD that is faithful

and the Holy One of Israel

and HE shall choose YOU

LORD promises to restore HIS people                verse 8- 12

Thus says the LORD

In an acceptable time have I heard YOU

and in a day of salvation have I helped YOU

and I will preserve YOU

and give YOU for a covenant of the people

to establish the earth

to cause to inherit the desolate heritages

That YOU may say to the prisoner – Go forth

to them that are in darkness – Show yourselves

They shall feed in the ways

and their pastures shall be in all high places

They shall not hunger nor thirst

neither shall the heat nor sun smite them

for HE that hath mercy on them shall lead them

even by the springs of water shall

HE guide them

And I will make all MY mountains a way

and MY highways shall be exalted

BEHOLD – these shall come from far – and – lo

these from the north and from the west

and these from the land of Sinim

Restoration brings comfort                                 verse 13

Sing – O heaven – be joyful – O earth

and break forth into singing – O mountains

for the LORD hath comforted HIS people

and will have mercy upon HIS afflicted

Children of Israel think they are forgotten         verse 14

BUT Zion said

            The LORD hath forsaken me

and my Lord has forgotten me

LORD promises future deliverance                     verse 15- 17

Can a woman forget her sucking child

that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb?

YEA – they may forget – YET will I not forget you

BEHOLD – I have graven thee upon the palms of MY hands

your walls are continually before ME

                        your children shall make haste

your destroyers and they that made you waste shall go

forth of you

Millennial return of Israel                                   verse 18- 21

LIFT up your eyes round about – and BEHOLD

all these gather themselves together – and come to you

As I live says the LORD – you shall surely clothe you with them all

as with an ornament – and bind them on you – as a bride does

for your waste and your desolate places

and the land of your destruction shall even now be

too narrow by reason of the inhabitants

and they that swallowed you up shall be far away

The children which you shall have –   after you have lost the other

shall say again in your ears

The place is too strait for me

give place to me that I may dwell

THEN shalt you say in your heart

Who has begotten me these – seeing I have lost my children

and am desolate – a captive – removing to and fro?

AND who hath brought up these?

BEHOLD I was left alone – these – where had they been?

Nations will return children of Israel                  verse 22- 23

THUS says the Lord GOD

BEHOLD – I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles

and set up MY standard to the people

and they shall bring your sons in their arms

and your daughters shall be carried upon

their shoulders

And kings shall be your nursing fathers

and their queens thy nursing mothers

they shall bow down to you with their face

toward the earth

and lick up the dust of your feet

and you shall know that I am the LORD

for they shall not be ashamed that wait for ME

World will know the true Redeemer                   verse 24- 26

Shall the prey be taken from the mighty

or the lawful captive delivered?

BUT thus says the LORD

Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away

and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered

for I will contend with him that contends with you

and I will save your children

And I will feed them that oppress you with their own flesh

and they shall be drunken with their own blood

as with sweet wine

and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am

                                    your SAVIOR and thy REDEEMER

                                                the mighty One of Jacob

COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 1   Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (990 “womb” [beten] means the belly, abdomen, or within.)

DEVOTION:  Many of the people of the Bible tell us that they were called of God before they were born, while they were still in their mother’s belly.

The baby in the womb is a human being according to the Bible. Those who believe in “choice” are making a choice to kill a human being before they even enter the world. The baby in the womb as a body, soul and spirit. All those who chose to end a life before they have a choice to live outside of the womb will be answering to the LORD. Is this the unpardonable sin? NO!! The only unpardonable sin in the Bible is the rejection of the LORD Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

We were called before the foundation of the world by God’s choice. HE is in control. HE is working HIS plan in our life. HE knew those who would be HIS servants even before they were in the womb but HE calls them to HIS servant while they are still in the womb.

The Messiah, who is Jesus Christ, was called from the womb to be a servant of the LORD. HE was called to be a suffering servant. Israel needed a Savior and HE would save them from their sins. They would be restored upon HIS return to full standing with the LORD during the Millennial reign.

In the meantime, all those who are born will be given a choice to follow the LORD or not follow. They will have no excuse when they stand before the LORD in judgment and HE asks them what they did with HIS Son, Jesus Christ in their lifetime.

Now we have to acknowledge HIM in our lives by confessing our sins and asking HIM to come into our lives. Have you done this? HE has done HIS part, have we acknowledge HIM?

CHALLENGE: Remember a child in the womb is important to the LORD. We should value life at conception. God does!!!

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 13      Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. (7442 “sing” [ranan] means to overcome, to cry out, shout for joy, give a ringing cry, or rejoice.)

DEVOTION:  There is a better day coming for Israel. The LORD doesn’t give up on HIS people. This verse tells the Israelites to be joyful.

This verse instructs the Israelites to break forth into singing. The LORD comforts HIS people. The LORD has mercy on those of HIS people who are afflicted. That includes all of HIS people.

There is coming a day when the Messiah will reign in this world. HE will cause all those who were reigning to come and worship at HIS feet. It is still future but Israel is waiting for the Messiah.

New Testament saints are to be singing as well. We are supposed to rejoice in the LORD. Some people come to church and show no sign of rejoicing in their salvation. If some of us are people watchers, we can observe the people around us. We can observe their enthusiasm during the worship service. Some don’t express the joy of the LORD in their singing or any other part of the service.

Of course there is one problem, if they are observing our lack of enthusiasm in worship. Let’s shout to the LORD the praise due HIS name. It is real enjoyable to see everyone involved in enthusiastic worship. It will happen in heaven. Why not start here on earth???

The LORD wants us to serve HIM while we are here on the earth. Part of our service is singing HIS praises. Our singing encourages others to sing. Our lack of singing discourages people who should be singing.

CHALLENGE: Set the pace for those around you by making a joyful noise unto the LORD every chance you get. It will encourage.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 15      Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you. The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982).  7911 כָּשַׁח, שָׁכַח [shakach, shakeach /shaw·kakh/] – to forget, to cease to care, to be forgotten.

DEVOTION: A mother’s love for her child (ren) is a special and delicate attribute. Whether it is because her child is nestled closely to her heart or all the special moments she shares with that little bundle of love, the bond is often strong and nearly unbreakable. Yet the Lord says that His love is greater than the strongest union of mankind.

Young has stated, “This is one of the strongest, if not the strongest expression of God’s love in the Old Testament, and is often compared with Jeremiah 31:20.” Young, 3:285. God wanted the Israelites to know that He loved them deeply even though they had been rebellious and stiff-necked. He desired to instruct them and to draw them unto himself. While the people of God has changed from the Israelites to the church in the New Testament God still desires to draw His own unto himself. He reaches out and continually seeks to make people understand His great love for them. Do you know His love today? Perhaps you have been like the Israelites and wandered far away from the love of the Father, He wants you to know He has not forgotten you!

CHALLENGE: As you read this you may sense that the Holy Spirit is drawing you back to a relationship with the Lord. He remembers you and has not forgotten his love for you and like the Father in Luke 15 is willing to drop everything to come running when He sees you coming back to Him. Come to Him today! QUOTES regarding passage

49:1–3. God’s Servant (vv. 3, 5–6) is the speaker in verses 1–5; God addressed Him in verse 6. Like the Lord, He called on the islands (see comments on 41:1) and the nations to listen (see comments on 46:3) to Him because of His special “calling” from the Lord. His mouth was like a sharpened sword, that is, it was a weapon to destroy the disobedient (cf. 1:20; also note Heb. 4:12; Rev. 1:16; 19:15). He was also likened to a sharp arrow. The Servant was to display God’s splendor (Isa. 49:3; cf. 60:21; 61:3).

Why is the Servant here called Israel? This cannot refer to the nation because the Servant is to draw that nation back to God. The Messiah is called Israel because He fulfills what Israel should have done. In His person and work He epitomizes the nation. (Martin, J. A. (1985). Isaiah. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 1103). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Light in the darkness (49:1–7). What right did God’s Servant have to address the Gentile nations with such authority? From before His birth, He was called by God to His ministry (Jer. 1:5; Gal. 1:15); and God prepared Him like a sharp sword and a polished arrow (Heb. 4:12; Rev. 1:16). Messiah came as both a Servant and a Warrior, serving those who trust Him and ultimately judging those who resist Him.

All of God’s servants should be like prepared weapons. “It is not great talents God blesses so much as great likeness to Jesus,” wrote Robert Murray McCheyne. “A holy minister [servant] is an awful weapon in the hand of God.”

The Jewish nation was called to glorify God and be a light to the Gentiles, but they failed in their mission. This is why Messiah is called “Israel” in Isaiah 49:3: He did the work that Israel was supposed to do. Today, the church is God’s light in this dark world (Acts 13:46–49; Matt. 5:14–16), and like Israel, we seem to be failing in our mission to take the Good News to the ends of the earth. We cannot do the job very effectively when only 5 percent of the average local church budget is devoted to evangelism!

As Jesus Christ ministered on earth, especially to His own people Israel, there were times when His work seemed in vain (Isa. 49:4). The religious leaders opposed Him, the disciples did not always understand Him, and those He helped did not always thank Him. He lived and labored by faith, and God gave Him success.

Our Lord could not minister to the Gentiles until first He ministered to the Jews (vv. 5–6). Read carefully Matthew 10:5–6; 15:24; Luke 24:44–49; Acts 3:25–26; 13:46–47; and Romans 1:16. When our Lord returned to heaven, He left behind a believing remnant of Jews that carried on His work. We must never forget that “salvation is of the Jews” (John 4:22). The Bible is a Jewish book, the first believers and missionaries were Jews, and the Gentiles would not have heard the Gospel had it not been brought to them by Jews. Messiah was despised by both Jews and Gentiles (Isa. 49:7), but He did God’s work and was glorified (Phil. 2:1–11). (Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). Be Comforted (pp. 121–122). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books)

49:1 from the womb … the body of My mother. The whole world, including Gentiles (“islands,” “peoples from afar”) are called to recognize two significant points: (1) the Messiah/Servant will be a human being, born as others are of a woman, yet virgin born (cf. 7:14; Lk 1:30–33), and (2) He will be an individual as distinct from a personified group such as the nation of Israel, which has also been called the Lord’s servant (41:8, 9; 42:19; 43:10; 44:1, 2, 21, 26; 45:4; 48:20; 50:10). (MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (2006). The MacArthur study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Is 49:1). Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers.)

IN CHAPTER forty-nine Israel is brought before us as Jehovah’s servant, but Israel as a nation had failed terribly in that place. And so while it is Israel who speaks and says, “The Lord hath called me from the womb … And said unto me, Thou art My servant,” it is really the Lord Jesus Christ Himself who takes the place of Israel, the true Israel. The servant here is no longer the nation as such, though it does speak here in these opening verses. But it is the Lord Jesus who takes the place of the nation.

Other scriptures indicate this. In Hosea God speaks of bringing the nation out of Egypt: “Out of Egypt have I called My Son.” That prophecy is referred to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, who as a little babe was carried down to Egypt and brought back to the land “that it might be fulfilled,” Matthew says, “which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called My Son” (Matt. 2:15). So that in the first instance the son there was Israel, but it was the Lord Jesus, the true Israel, who was actually before the mind of God.

We often use similar language, substituting an individual for the whole people. Louis the Fourteenth, that proud French monarch, exclaimed on one occasion: “France must rule the world, and I am France.” And Napoleon Bonaparte said, “The State must be supreme, and I am the State.” If uninspired men use language in that way, how much more has Christ the right to say, “I am Israel, the true Israel.” The very name “Israel” meant “A Prince with God,” and it was He then who was manifested as the true Prince, the servant of Jehovah, when Israel, both as a nation and individually, utterly failed.

Next comes a remarkable prophecy of Christ’s rejection by Israel and the calling of the Gentiles. Messiah says, “I have laboured in vain, I have spent My strength for nought” (verse 4). That is, as far as Israel is concerned, His work seemed a failure on earth. “He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.” But He leaves all with Jehovah, and declares, “Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord.” For He has said unto Him, “It is a light thing that Thou shouldest be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give Thee for a light to the Gentiles, that Thou mayest be My salvation unto the end of the earth.” Through Messiah’s rejection by Israel, a greater work would be accomplished. The message would go out to the Gentile world. (Ironside, H. A. (1952). Expository notes on the prophet Isaiah. (pp. 278–280). Neptune, NJ: Loizeaux Brothers.)

GLORY BE TO GOD

I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

John 17:4

The coming of the Holy Spirit is part of this great and vital plan of salvation, and it is, of course, one of the most wonderful aspects of all. In the council in eternity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit spoke together and planned the salvation of man. The Father stated the great scheme, and the Son accepted the decision that He should be the One to carry out the plan; and then it was equally decided that the Holy Spirit should complete what the Son had done for mankind.

This is what is sometimes called “the economy of the Trinity,” the division of the work between the three Persons, and it is something that appears very clearly throughout the Scriptures. It appears, for example, in the very beginning, in Genesis, where we are shown how the creation itself was the work of the Trinity: “In the beginning God…” Then we are told that “the Spirit of God moved…“Everything was made through the Word, but in a sense the agency was still the Spirit.

The Father sends the Son, and the great business of the Son is to glorify the Father. He says, “I have glorified thee on the earth; I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do” (John 17:4).There is a sense in which the Lord Jesus Christ never glorified Himself. That is why He laid aside His glory, and why He was not born in a king’s palace but in a stable. That, too, is why He took upon Himself the form of a servant; it was all to glorify the Father. All His life as a man was in a sense lived just in this way, in order that all the glory and power might be to God the Father.

A Thought to Ponder:  Our Lord lived so that all the glory and power might be to God the Father. (From Saved in Eternity, pp. 85-86, by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

Exodus 19
The Israelites migrate to Mount Sinai where Moses meets with God.

INSIGHT

God’s love for us is nothing less than total. And He leaves no doubt in our minds as to His commitment to us. The Lord goes so far as to establish a covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai and with us at Calvary as an expression of His absolute commitment to us.

We should have two responses: we should love fully the God who first loved us. And, if we are to love our family as God loves us, we must leave no doubts in their minds as to the totality of our love for them. Communicate your love to them in certain terms. (Quiet Walk)

Destroy Them, O God
“Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.” (Psalm 5:10

No less than 20 of the psalms contain what are known as “imprecations”—that is, prayers to God to judge and destroy the wicked—and this verse is the first of them. As such, it sets the pattern, helping us to understand why the Lord would include such vindictive prayers in His inspired Word. At first, they seem incongruous with a God of love and mercy who has told us to love our enemies, but they help us to understand that God also must judge sin—especially the sin of rebellion. In them, we are taught to see the sin of rebellion in its true light—through the eyes of a loving Creator who has been rejected to the point of no return.
It is one thing to commit an act of wickedness when overcome by temptation; it is quite another thing for men to deliberately rebel against God Himself, seeking by their “counsels” to turn others against Him, and even, if it were possible, to destroy Him and His Word altogether.
This is the age-long sin of Satan, as well as that of the leaders of both ancient paganism and modern evolutionary humanism. Like the psalmist David, we must pray for God to defeat them and their counsels, for otherwise they will continue to lead multitudes of others into their own transgression. There is still room for forgiveness of individual sinners, of course—even among such as these—if they come in true repentance, but most such rebels are already irrevocably hardened against God and His Word. The appropriate prayer in such a case is (as David prayed in another of the imprecatory psalms): “Scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield. . . . let them even be taken in their pride” (Psalm 59:11-12). Worldview Divide

After a week-long delay due to the partial government shutdown, the 2019 State of the Union Address showed up in a big way. When the time arrived for President Donald Trump’s speech, it came with all the requisite drama that surrounds The State of the Union and then some. Indeed, the deep worldview divides represented by the current political climate overshadowed the usual political pageantry associated with this speech. It was an epic drama of democracy.

Long before he became President of the United States, Donald Trump understood television. He understood reality TV, and his expertise was on display last night. The President carefully orchestrated arguments and policy statements on a range of issues like infrastructure, women in the workplace, or the price of pharmaceutical drugs—issues that his partisan opponents could not help applauding. He understood the optics of this event and he crafted a message that would paint himself as a statesman of the republic who could speak to issues that bridged partisan divides. By evoking imagery of Ronald Reagan, the President summoned the divided congress to greatness: to pursue results, live for a grand vision, and promote America’s “destiny” as an example for the world.

At the same time, the President also knew exactly what he was doing when he articulated points that would not garner support from Democrats but remarkable disagreement. That, too, was part of the plan—and one issue, specifically, magnified the vast worldview divide present within the American culture.

During his speech, the President promoted a policy for paid family leave. This policy boasts the support of many Democrats and even some Republicans. The Democrats, along with many in the President’s own party, applauded the policy proposal. The President’s next series of words silenced the bipartisan applause:

“There could be no greater contrast to the beautiful image of a mother holding her infant child than the chilling displays our nation saw in recent days. Lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother’s womb moments from birth. These are living, feeling, beautiful babies who will never get the chance to share their love and dreams with the world. And then, we had the case of the governor of Virginia where he stated that he would ‘execute a baby after birth.’ To defend the dignity of every person, I am asking the Congress to pass legislation to prohibit the late term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother’s womb.”

The President struck a contentious, volatile, and crucial chord with these words that not only condemned late-term abortion but called on Congress to completely ban the atrocity now legal in New York and championed in Virginia.

Abortion reigns as the only sacrament that remains amongst the political left. They treat it as a sacrament to cherish and defend at all costs—a worldview that presses them to pass legislation like the new law in New York State.

Indeed, the President’s words highlighted that great worldview divide over something as basic as the dignity and sanctity of human life. When the President condemned late-term abortions, the cameras in the House Chamber panned the faces of the Democrats who exhibited a stone-cold expression—they sat in disgruntled silence. As Donald Trump called for legislation to end the practice, their opposition to his call was painfully and visibly clear. The ideology and worldview of the political left has trapped them within an argument from which they apparently have no intention of escaping. On a nationally televised address with the eyes of the nation watching, lawmakers eagerly embraced a culture of death.

Then, the President did something remarkable, taking his comments in a direction virtually unprecedented in the language of recent presidents. The President said, “Let us work together to build a culture that cherishes innocent life. And let us reaffirm a fundamental truth: all children—born and unborn—are made in the holy image of God.” Right there, one of the most fundamental doctrines of Scripture and definitional truths about humanity was affirmed. That ought not to go without our attention. The President made very clear that the grounds for human dignity and the protection of the unborn flows from a biblical worldview—that all humanity is made in the image of God.

The left was unmoved. They sat as stone statuary. The worldview of the left, however, leaves them with no other choice. This has had two horrific consequences. First, the logic of the pro-abortion movement, if honest, must point to the unrestricted access of abortion at any point in the pregnancy for any reason. Second, the pressure of the pro-abortion worldview has made pro-life Democrats an extinct species.

The horror of abortion has dotted the headlines of recent days, and the President’s speech put the issue front and center in the national spotlight. It is my hope that this issue will not be swept under the rug in the coming days, weeks, and months, but that the nation’s leaders will, with zeal and urgency, pass legislation that will protect the lives of the unborn—precious creatures of God made in his holy image.
