ISAIAH 52
Redemption of Israel verse 1- 2
Awake – Awake – put on your strength – O Zion
put on your beautiful garments – O Jerusalem –the holy city
for henceforth there shall no more come into you the
uncircumcised and the unclean
Shake yourself from the dust – arise – sit down – O Jerusalem
loose yourself from the bands of your neck
O captive daughter of Zion
Payment for redemption: nothing verse 3
For thus says the LORD
You have sold yourselves for nought
and you shall be redeemed without money
Power in the name of the LORD verse 4- 6
For thus says the Lord GOD
MY people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there
and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause
NOW THEREFORE – what have I here says the LORD
that MY people is taken away for nought?
they that rule over them make them
to howl says the LORD
and MY name continually every day is blasphemed
THEREFORE MY people
shall know MY name
THEREFORE they shall know IN THAT DAY
that I am HE that does speak
BEHOLD – it is I
Rejoice in the victory of the LORD verse 7- 10
How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of him that brings good tidings
that publishes peace
that brings good tidings of good
that publishes salvation – that says unto Zion
YOUR God REIGNS!
Your watchmen shall life up the voice
with the voice together shall they sing
for they shall SEE eye to eye
`when the LORD shall bring again Zion
Break forth into joy – sing together – you waste places of Jerusalem
for the LORD has comforted HIS people
HE has redeemed Jerusalem
the LORD has made bare HIS holy arm
in the eyes of the nations
and all the ends of the earth shall SEE
the salvation of our God
Protection of the LORD verse 11- 12
Depart you – depart you – go you out from thence
touch no unclean thing
go you out of the midst of her be you clean
that bear the vessels of the LORD
for you shall not go out with haste – nor go by flight
for the LORD will go before you
AND the God of Israel will be your rereward
Suffering servant: Jesus Christ verse 13- 15
BEHOLD – MY servant shall deal prudently
HE shall be exalted and extolled – and be very high
as many were astonished at you
HIS visage was so marred more than any man
and HIS form more than the sons of men
so shall HE sprinkle many nations
The kings shall shut their mouths at HIM
for that which had not been told them shall they SEE
and that which they had not heard
shall they consider
COMMENTARY:
DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers
: 7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace; that brings good tiding of good, that publishes salvation; that says unto Zion, Thy God reigns! (8085 “publishes” [shama] means proclaim, announce, cause to hear, call, report, shew forth, tell, or witness.)
DEVOTION: The LORD has a message to share. HE wants HIS people to AWAKE to good news. HE wants them to shake the dust from their bodies.
HE is going to redeem them. While they were in captivity HIS name was blasphemed. NOW they were going to know the power of HIS name. HE is going to speak and everyone is going to listen. What is HE going to proclaim? Good news!!! HE is going to send peace and prosperity to HIS people. The feet of those who bring good tiding of good are called beautiful.
The LORD was going to do all this through HIS suffering servant who was going to come in the future. At present they were going to suffer for their sins. They were sold into slavery because of their sin but it wasn’t the LORD who had sold them. HE was paid nothing for them to go into captivity and HE wasn’t going to pay any money to get them out of captivity. HE was going to pay with SOMEONE who was worth more than money could buy. HE was going to pay for their sins through the blood of HIS Son, Jesus Christ.
This was good news. It was the good news that was spread by the true prophets of the LORD. It was the good news that was spread by those who were redeemed in Israel.
The good news that the New Testament presents is that Christ shed HIS blood on the cross. HE died for our sins. HE was buried. HE rose again from the dead to show us that we can have victory over death because of HIS substitutionary atonement.
All those who are followers of the LORD will spend eternity with HIM. All those who reject our message will spend eternity in the lake of fire with the devil and his angels.
Our feet are to bring the good tidings of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are to share our faith with those who are in our world. We have an exclusive message to give to the world. There is only one way into God’s presence and that is through Jesus Christ alone. There is NO other way!!!
Are we sharing our faith? Are our feet as beautiful to those in our world as those recorded in this passage of Scripture?
CHALLENGE: The end of this verse tells us a truth we should never forget: OUR GOD REIGNS. HE is still on the throne. Praise HIS name!!!
DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers
: 9 Break forth into joy, sing together, you waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD has comforted HIS people, HE has redeemed Jerusalem. (5162 “comforted” [nacham] means console, to alleviate sorrow or distress, give emotional strength to, or express sympathy)
DEVOTION: One of the promises of the LORD to HIS people is that HE will be right there while they are going through trials HE allows in their lives. HE wants us to know that we are never alone when we are going through hard times.
Too often we think that we are alone when in reality HE is right there to comfort us and to give us the strength to face anything HE allows in our lives. HE loves us and part of that love is to strengthen us as we face our time here on this earth.
The world wants to give us a hard time and those who are without Christ like to see those who are believers struggle in their daily walk with the LORD, so that, they can say that the LORD is not really caring for them.
Too often even believers believe that this lie is the truth. We need to make sure that we are putting our confidence in the LORD at all times. HE is there and cares for HIS own.
One of the signs that we are trusting in HIM is to start singing during those times and have the joy of the LORD as our strength. If we are doing this those who are without Christ will wonder what is going on.
CHALLENGE: What does the world see as we go through hard times? Do they see the “joy of the LORD” or do they see discouragement? Only we can show them that the LORD is real!

:11 So the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness; Sorrow and sighing shall flee away. The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982).
DEVOTION: When joy fills our lives, it is natural for us to sing and to give thanks! On special occasions like birthdays, promotions, or weddings the sound of music and joyful laughter fills the air. When the LORD returns, the righteous remnant will sing joyfully because He will have comforted and redeemed His people. This work of grace on their behalf will show all the nations His power and the salvation He provides. [The Bible Knowledge Commentary, 1106.]
What a wonderful day that will be and we shall rejoice in the reality of the King of Kings being here on earth. Some are expecting the Lord’s return today and while that may occur as it is imminent and nothing except the Lord’s proclamation stops Him from coming we cannot predict it. When He does return the whole of Heaven and earth will rejoice that the rightful king and Sovereign Lord has re-established his throne.
May it be today, but if it isn’t, continue to work, anticipate and worship like it could be today!
CHALLENGE: Israel anticipated that return of the people to the land and the return of the Lord to the Land as well. Believers today anticipate the Lord’s return and the eternal establishment of His kingdom. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” Rev. 22:20 (Dr. Brian Miller – board members)
DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers
: 12 For you shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward. (622 “rereward” [acaph] means gatherer, collector, rear-guard, or to bring up the rear.
DEVOTION: Here we have another reference to the suffering servant of Isaiah. This is a person who is going to come and give Israel relief from captivity. They are in captivity because of their sin and they need a deliverer.
The children of Israel were under the control of many nations. They were presently going to go under the control of Babylon because of their sin. They were under the control of the Medes and Persians, Greeks and finally the Romans before the coming of the Messiah or suffering servant.
Once HE came we find that the children of Israel rejected HIM. They were the ones who called out for HIM to be crucified. They didn’t want a suffering servant but a King.
There is coming a time when HE will be King. HE will lead them out of captivity and form the nation of Israel again with HIM being on the throne. HE will reign with HIS saints for a thousand years.
This has not happened yet. It is still in the future. However, this passage gives us another truth we need to learn. Remember that in battle there is always the danger that the enemy can sneak up behind an army and kill them from the rear.
Here we find that the Messiah or Jesus Christ is going to lead them into victory with HIS Father in the rear of the procession protecting their backs. They will be sure to have victory with Christ in the front and the Father in the back.
We are promised victory in our daily life if we rely on the LORD for our protection. The Father sent the Son to confirm HIS promise to never leave us or forsake us. All three persons of the Godhead are working in us to give us victory over any enemy that comes from any direction to hurt us. That is part of the promise.
CHALLENGE: Realize that the enemy cannot get through the defenses of the LORD. We are protected on every side.

QUOTES regarding passage
13. The command to watch (see) is in effect the last of the series of commands which began in 51:1. They were glorious in their implications but lacking in explanations. After each in turn we want to say, ‘Yes, but how will this happen?’ The command to see brings us into the realm of accomplishment: watch the Servant and what he did. Act wisely: √śākal is wisdom to know exactly what to do in a given situation so as to bring the intended result. This wise and successful action will bring the Servant a threefold exaltation (raised … lifted up … highly exalted)—a trio which many link with the threefold exaltation of Jesus Christ in resurrection, ascension and heavenly enthronement. (Motyer, J. A. (1999). Isaiah: an introduction and commentary (Vol. 20, pp. 374–375). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.)

52:13. Two important points are made in this verse: the Servant will act wisely, doing what the Lord wants Him to do, and He will be … highly exalted. His being lifted up refers not to the kind of death He died on the cross, but to His being exalted at God’s right hand (Phil. 2:9; Col. 3:1; Heb. 1:3; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2; 1 Peter 3:22). (Martin, J. A. (1985). Isaiah. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 1107). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Startled at the Servant’s exaltation (Isa. 52:13). The Servant suffered and died, but He did not remain dead. He was “exalted and extolled, and [made] very high.” The phrase “deal prudently” means “to be successful in one’s endeavor.” What looked to men like a humiliating defeat was in the eyes of God a great victory (Col. 2:15). “I have glorified Thee on the earth,” He told His Father; “I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do” (John 17:4).
Jesus was not only raised from the dead, but His body was glorified. He ascended to heaven where He sat at the right hand of the Father. He has all authority (Matt. 28:18) because all things have been put under His feet (Eph. 1:20–23). There is no one in the universe higher than Jesus. What an astonishment to those who esteemed Him the lowest of the low. (See Phil. 2:1–11.) (Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). Be Comforted (p. 133). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Ver. 13. Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, &c.] Here properly a new chapter should begin, these three last verses treating of the same person and subject as the following chapter; even of Christ, his person, offices, humiliation, and exaltation, and the effects and fruits thereof; for of him undoubtedly the whole is to be understood. The Jews say it is a difficult prophecy; and so it is to them, being contrary to their notions and schemes, or otherwise it is plain and easy, respecting the Messiah; but rather than he should be thought to be meant, the modern ones have invented a variety of interpretations. Some apply this prophecy to Abraham; others to Moses; others to Ezra; others to Zorobabel; and others to any righteous person: the more principal and prevailing opinions among them are, that it is to be understood either of the whole body of the people of Israel in captivity, as Jarchi, Aben Ezra, and Kimchi; or of King Josiah, slain by Pharaohnecho, as Abarbinel; or of Jeremiah, as Saadiah Gaon; all which are weak and impertinent, and, as they disagree with each other, shew the perplexity they are under. The Targum interprets it of the Messiah; and so did the ancient Rabbins, as Aben Ezra and Alshech confess; and several parts of the prophecy are applied to him, both by ancient and modern ones, as will be seen in the exposition of it. Christ, as man and Mediator, is the servant of God, of his choosing and calling, sending, bringing forth, and supporting; see ch. 42:1 from whom he had both his work and his wages: the principal part of his service lay in working out the redemption and salvation of his people, in which he willingly and cheerfully engaged, and which he diligently and faithfully performed; in which he shewed a regard to his father’s will, love to his people, and great condescension, as well as wisdom; for, as it is here promised he would, so he did deal prudently; as in his infancy, when he disputed with the doctors in the temple, so throughout the whole of his public life, in preaching the Gospel, in answering the questions of his enemies, and in his behaviour at his apprehension, arraignment, condemnation, and crucifixion: or he shall cause to understand; make others wise and prudent; he caused them to understand his father’s mind and will, the Scriptures, and the Gospel in them; he made men wise unto salvation, and instructed in those things which belong to their peace; and he still does by his spirit, through the ministry of the word: or he shall prospert; the pleasure of the Lord prospered in his hands; he rode forth prosperously, destroying his and our enemies; was very successful in working out salvation, as he is in his advocacy and intercession for his people, and in the ministration of his Gospel; and is the author of all prosperity in his churches, and to particular believers. The Targum is, “behold, my servant the Messiah shall prosper;” and so another Jewish writer says, that the section which begins with these words is concerning the Messiah: he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high; as he has been exalted by his father, by raising him from the dead, and giving him glory; by placing him at his own right hand, and giving him all power in heaven and in earth; by committing all judgment into his hands, that all men may honour him as they do the Father: and he is extolled by his people, in his person and offices, by giving him the glory of their salvation, in their hearts, thoughts, and affections, with their mouths and lips; and so he is in his house and ordinances, by his ministers and churches: and is made very high; higher than the kings of the earth; higher than the angels of heaven; higher than the heavens themselves. The Jews say of the Messiah, in reference to these words, that he is exalted above Abraham, extolled above Moses, and made higher than the ministering angels; and in another ancient bookx of theirs it is said, the kingdom of Israel shall be exalted in the days of the Messiah, as it is written, he shall be exalted and extolled, &c. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 5, p. 309). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

Numbers 13
The Lord commands Moses to send spies into the land of Canaan.
INSIGHT
One of the most common mistakes we make during the tough times in life is to place our eyes on circumstances rather than on the promises of God. The Lord promises Israel that He will lead them into the Promised Land and defeat the armies that are living there. He even promises to send in swarms of hornets to drive out the armies, so Israel won’t even have to fight. But one look at the giants, and every promise is forgotten. One glimpse of the armies, and “God is not enough.”
The New Testament is full of promises for us. We must keep our eyes on the promises.

THE HOLY SPIRIT REVEALS THE TEACHING OF CHRIST
When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. John 16:13
The Holy Spirit not only reveals the person and the work of Christ—He also reveals the teaching of Christ. Our Lord said to the disciples before He left them, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth” (John 16:12-13). That is, “He will remind you of the things I have said and that you cannot grasp now, and He will make them plain to you.”
So if you are in trouble about the understanding of the Gospel, ask God to give you His Spirit in all His fullness, and you will begin to understand. The fatal thing in these matters is to bring your natural intellect to bear upon them: “The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God…neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14).
Read 1 Corinthians 2, and understand that these things are in a different realm, they belong to a different order, and the only way to understand the teaching of the New Testament about Christ’s personal work and teaching is to have the eyes of your understanding enlightened by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, if you are in trouble, do not waste your time trying to read books of philosophy about these matters; do not try to grasp them with the natural intellect, for that is impossible. We are dealing with miracles. We are in the realm of the supernatural and the spiritual, and the only hope for us is that the Holy Spirit will come with that unction, with His eye salve, to anoint our eyes so that they will be opened to the blessed truth.
A Thought to Ponder: We are in the realm of the supernatural and the spiritual, and the only hope for us is the Holy Spirit. (From Saved in Eternity, pp. 90-91, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

Fifty-seven percent of evangelicals said they believed many religions can lead to eternal life. In other words, nearly half of American evangelicals were left in the category of believing Jesus is not the exclusive way to heaven.
