Leviticus 7

Law of the trespass offeringverses 1-6

Likewise this is the law of the trespass offering

it is MOST HOLY

In the place where they kill the burnt offering shall they

kill the trespass offering – and the blood thereof shall he

sprinkle round about on the altar

And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof the rump

and the fat that covers the inwards

and the two kidneys – and the fat that is on them

which is by the flanks

and the caul that is above the liver – with the kidneys

it shall he take away

and the priest shall burn them on the altar

for an offering made by fire unto the LORD

                  it is a trespass offering

Every male among the priests shall eat thereof

it shall be eaten in the holy place it is MOST HOLY

Both trespass and sin offering offer atonementverses 7-10

As the sin offering is – so is the trespass offering

there is one law for them – the priest that makes

ATONEMENT therewith shall have it

And the priest that offers any man’s burnt offering

even the priest shall have to himself the

skin of the burnt offering which he has offered

And all the meat offering that is baked in the oven

and all that is dressed in the frying pan – and in the pan

shall be the priest’s that offers it

and every meat offering – mingled with oil – and dry

shall the sons of Aaron have – one as much as another

Peace offering for thanksgivingverses 11-15

And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings

which he shall offer to the LORD

IF he offer it for a thanksgiving

THEN he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving

unleavened cakes mingled with oil

and unleavened wafers anointed with oil

                                    and cakes mingled with

oil – of fine flour – fried

BESIDES the cakes

he shall offer for his offering leavened bread with the

sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offering

And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation for a

heave offering to the LORD

and it shall be the priest’s that sprinkles the

blood of the peace offering

And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for

thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day that it is offered

he shall not leave any of it until the morning

Peace offering regarding a vowverses 16-18

BUT IF the sacrifice of his offering be a vow – or a voluntary offering

it shall be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice

and on the morrow also the remainder of it shall be eaten

BUT the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on

the THIRD day shall be burnt with fire

And IF any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings be eaten

at all on the THIRD day – it shall not be accepted

neither shall it be IMPUTED to him that offered it

                                    it shall be an ABOMINATION

and the soul that eats of it shall bear his iniquity

Unclean and clean individualsverses 19-21

And the flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten

it shall be burnt with fire – as for the flesh

all that be clean shall eat thereof

But the soul that eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings

that pertain unto the LORD – having his uncleanness on him

even that soul shall be cut off from his people

Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean thing

as the uncleanness of man – or any unclean beast

                        or any abominable unclean thing

and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offering

                        which pertains unto the LORD

even that soul shall be cut off from his people

Never eat fat or blood commandedverses 22-27

And the LORD spoke unto Moses

saying

Speak to the children of Israel

saying

You shall eat no manner of fat – of ox – sheep – goat

and the fat of the beast that dies of itself

and the fat of that which is torn with beasts

may be used in any other use

BUT you shall in no wise eat of it

For whosoever eats the fat of the beast

of which men offer an offering made by fire to the LORD

even the soul that eats it shall be cut off from the people

Moreover you shall eat no manner of blood

whether it be of fowl or of beast – in any of your dwellings

whatsoever soul it be that eats any manner of blood

even that soul shall be cut off from his people

Parts of Peace offering given to priestverses 28-34

And the LORD spoke unto Moses

saying

Speak to the children of Israel

saying

He that offers the sacrifice of his peace offerings to the LORD

shall bring his oblation to the LORD of the sacrifice of

his peace offerings

His own hands shall bring the offerings of the LORD made by fire

the fat with the breast – it shall he bring

that the breast may be waved for a WAVE offering

 before the LORD

And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar

BUT the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’

and the right shoulder shall ye give to the

priest for an HEAVE offering of the

sacrifices of your peace offerings

He among the sons of Aaron

that offers the blood of the peace offerings – and the fat

shall have the right shoulder for his part

FOR the wave breast and the heave shoulder have I taken of the

children of Israel from off the sacrifices of their peace offering

and have given them to Aaron the priest

and to his sons by a STATUTE for ever

                                                from the children of Israel

Offering at the anointing of sons of Aaronverses 35-36

This is the portion of the anointing of Aaron

and the anointing of his sons

out of the offerings of the LORD made by fire

in the day when he presented them to minister

to the LORD in the priest’s office

which the LORD commanded to be given them of the

children of Israel – in the day that he anointed them

by a STATUTE for ever throughout

their generations

List of offering children of Israel are to give LORDverses 37-38

This is the law of the burnt offering – meal offering – sin offering

trespass offering – consecrations – sacrifice of the peace offerings

which the LORD commanded Moses in mount Sinai

in the day that he commanded the children of Israel

to offer their oblations to the LORD

                        in the wilderness of Sinai

COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 12      If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried. (8426 “thanksgiving” [towdah] means praise, thanks, thank offerings, confession, choir, song of thanksgiving, or hymn of praise)

DEVOTION:  This offering was given to thank the LORD for something HE had done for the individual bringing the offering. It is also called a fellowship offering because the priest and the one bringing the offering would eat a meal together with part of the offering.

The meat of the offering had to be eaten the same day. So we find that when someone gave this offering the officiating priest was obligated to eat a meal with the individual.

Today the church as what is called fellowship meals after the partaking of the communion table. The LORD established the ordinance of communion with the disciples before HE died.

Christians today gather once a month to celebrate the communion table as a time to examine themselves and their relationship with the LORD. They are to confess sin.  They are to make sure their attitude is right with the LORD.

After the service there would be a time of gathering of the saints for a meal together. It was sometimes called a “Love feast.” However, the Corinthian church had a problem. The rich were eating their own food instead of sharing it with the poor. Also there were people drinking too much at the meal. Paul wrote to correct this problem.

We are to have fellowship together with fellow believers on a regular basis to cause each other to be encouraged in the LORD. When there is good fellowship the church can be encouraged and the people can grow in the LORD.

That was one church I helped that didn’t celebrate communion very often which didn’t encourage closeness in the congregation. We need to celebrate communion regularly with each other in the church.

CHALLENGE: Genuine communion with the LORD requires genuine thankfulness for the forgiveness of sin and fellowship with the LORD!

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 18      And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings be eaten at all on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed to him that offers it: it shall be an abomination, and the soul that eats of it shall bear his iniquity. (2803 “imputed” [chashab] means to weave, to respect, hold in high regard, reckon, esteem, accounted, or to be computed)

DEVOTION: Rules are rules. When the LORD gives a rule it is expected to be obeyed. Here we have the third day rule. Throughout Scripture we find that the third day is mentioned often in association with something good or bad. Jesus arose on the THIRD Day. When reading through the Word of God, you should notice the mention of the third day.

Here we have a rule that none of the peace offering was to be eaten on the third day. If this happened the reason for the sacrifice would not be satisfied because God would not accept the sacrifice.

When a sacrifice is brought it is for the atonement of sin usually. If the person eats anything of the sacrifice of the animal his sin would not be forgiven. The word “impute” is used throughout Scripture to show that something is given to someone.

In the case of sacrifices there was the forgiveness of sin and the imputation of righteousness on the individual. He was forgiven of his sin and his relationship with the LORD was restored.

If the third day rule was broken than the LORD would not forgive and there would be no imputation of forgiveness that was necessary for the restoration of fellowship with the LORD.

The individual was adding a sin to an offering which is not good. The guilt of the sin would remain on the person bring the offering. Obedience to the directions regarding the sharing of the meal need to be obeyed for there to be forgiveness.

Christ’s resurrection on the third day showed that HIS sacrifice was sufficient for the forgiveness of our sins throughout eternity. We serve a risen Savior who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our sins on the cross.

CHALLENGE: Are we thankful for the complete forgiveness HIS sacrifice gives us?

: 19      And the flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire: and as for the flesh, all that be clean shall eat thereof. (5060 “touches” [naga`] means lay the hand upon, join, smite or strike)

DEVOTION:  These first seven chapters dealt with the sacrifices that the priests were to offer to the LORD on a regular basis. Each sacrifice had a special purpose. The sacrifices covered in this chapter deal with those centered around fellowship with each other. The priests were to eat meals together. The priests and the people were to eat meals together.

Fellowship is important to the LORD. The LORD wants HIS people to have fellowship with HIM. The LORD wants HIS people to have fellowship with each other. They are not to fellowship in sin but to fellowship in righteousness.

The rules of the sacrifices were detailed. There were things that were clean and there were things that were unclean. The priests when they sacrificed had to be washed. They had to put on special clothes. They had to offer the sacrifices.

When the sacrifices were burned they had to take the ashes out from the altar. Before they could take the ashes away they had to change their clothes and then take them out. The priestly clothes were clean. The vessels that were used in the sacrifices were clean.

However, if the flesh of the sacrifices were joined with anything that was unclean then the priest could not eat of their part of the sacrifice. The whole sacrifice had to be burned on the altar. It was unclean and if the priest ate of it – he was unclean.

These rules or commands were for fellowship purposes but they also had health concerns. The LORD knew all about contamination. The LORD knew all about disease. HE wanted the people to listen to HIM, so that, they were kept from sickness and death.

Today we are living sacrifices. We have to keep away from things that God calls unclean. We have to watch who we fellowship with in the world. We have to watch what we see in this world. We have to watch what we say in this world.

Too often we act like everyone else in the world. Too often we say things that those in the world say. Too often we watch the same programs that the world watches on our television, on our computers and in the movie theaters.

We have to be clean. There is a saying surrounding the use of computers. If we put garbage into the computer, garbage comes out. If we put garbage in our minds it affects how we think and act. God wants HIS servants to act and think righteous thoughts and actions. Let’s ask the LORD to help us to be clean today!!!

CHALLENGE: Ask the LORD if there are any hidden areas in our lives that we think that God can’t see. People might not know or see them but the LORD always sees what we are doing. HE corrects us if we are HIS children.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

:35       This is the portion of the anointing of Aaron, and of the anointing of his sons, out of the offerings of the Lord made by fire, in the day when he presented them to minister unto the Lord in the priest’s office. (3547 “priest’s office” [kahan] means 1 to act as a priest, minister in a priest’s office. 1a (Piel). 1a1 to minister as a priest, serve as a priest. 1a2 to be or become a priest. 1a3 to play the priest. [Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship])

DEVOTION:  There was a portion of the sin offerings which went to the priest who was fulfilling the office during the time of the sacrifice.  God’s plan, then, was for the priests and their families to be fed by the people for doing the ministry that they were doing.  This was God’s way of providing for the priests and the Levites, who were not to have a specific provision of land when the children of Israel came into the Promised Land.

Today, God plans for His ministers to be provided for by the people whom they are shepherding.  This principle of grace giving is explained in 2 Corinthians 9.  Paul compares it to allowing the oxen to eat of the grain as they treaded upon it.  We need to be aware of the needs of those who are ministering to us, and even ask our pastors and missionaries if there is something that they need us to provide for them (perhaps going out of our ways to do so).  We are to do so generously and out of the first part of our income.  It is a mockery of those who call themselves Christians that there is so little given to the work of God.

Many are not even aware that there are missionaries out in the world today who are dependent on the local churches to help support them.  God’s plan is to reach the world through those whom He has called as missionaries (Matthew 28:19-20).  We need to educate ourselves about those who are serving the Lord throughout the world and ask what part God would have us play in this project.  Perhaps He will motivate you to help support the ministry of Small Church Ministries.

CHALLENGE:  Ask your pastor today how you can meet a specific need in his life. (MW)

: 38      Which the LORD commanded Moses in mount Sinai, in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations to the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai. (7133 “oblations” [qorban] means offering, sacrifice, or gift)

DEVOTION:  When Moses met with the LORD on Mount Sinai he gave him many instructions regarding many different aspects of worship. It took the LORD forty days and nights to instruct Moses. Also, as you remember Moses had to make a second trip up the mount to receive the second set of tablets. During this second trip he stayed another forty days and nights for instructions. So, the LORD had eighty days to instruct Moses. Not sure if Moses slept any of this time in the mount.

Here we find that Moses had given the Levites instructions regarding their responsibility in offering the sacrifices and instructed the people in what sacrifices to bring for each occasion in their life.

Remember that God didn’t leave anything to chance when HE trained the children of Israel. HE fully trained them in their responsibilities and they had no excuse.

Now we have received instructions through Jesus Christ when HE instructed HIS disciples on how to live the Christian life in the Gospels. The disciples received instructions through the ministry of the Holy Spirit when they wrote the rest of the New Testament to give us guidance in serving the LORD.

God never left anything to guesswork. HE wanted everyone to know what to do when in their life. HE is a God of order not confusion. Those who are confused about what the LORD expects of them are not listening to the training of the Holy Spirit in the life.

CHALLENGE: Realize the truth that we have all we need to know recorded in the Word of God for us to live a life that is pleasing to the LORD. No excuses accepted.

QUOTES regarding passage

Ver. 6. Every male among the priests shall eat thereof, &c.] Of the flesh of it, after the fat was taken off and burnt, the rest belonged to the priests and their sons, and to them only, not to their wives and daughters: it shall be eaten in the holy place; in the court of the tabernacle, in some apartment in it, for that purpose, as afterwards in the temple; it was not to be carried home to their houses, for all in the family to partake of, only the priests and their sons were to eat of it: it is most holy; and therefore none but such who were devoted to holy services might eat of it; only sanctified persons, true believers, who are made priests unto God, have a right to eat of the altar Christ, or can eat his flesh in a spiritual sense, and feed upon him by faith, and receive nourishment from him, Heb. 13:10. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 1, p. 565). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

In chap 6:27, etc, the stress of Divine injunctions is laid on the quality of the sanctity distinguishing the sin offering: and here it is reaffirmed (7:1) “it is most holy,” and (v. 6) “it shall be eaten in the holy place, it is most holy.” Ponder that inflexible requirement and consider that there are still inevitable laws and fixed conditions of acceptable approach to God. (Jellie, W. H., & Brown, F. W. (1892). Leviticus (p. 89). New York; London; Toronto: Funk & Wagnalls Company.)

7:1–10 The instructions for the disposal of the guilt offering include the location for the sacrifice (i.e., in the same place as the burnt offering; 7:2), the removal and burning of the fat (7:3–5), and the restriction of those who may partake of the offering to the males of Aaron’s family (7:6). This information was intended for the priests, so it was not given in the earlier instructions for the laity regarding guilt offerings (5:14–6:7). There the focus was on making restitution for individual Israelites. The overall procedure and disposal of the sacrifice as food for the priests was very much like that of the sin offering (7:7).

After the prescribed provision from the guilt and sin offering is explained, the discussion moves to provisions from the burnt offering and the grain offering (7:8–10), once again because the earlier instruction was normally limited to the rights and responsibilities of the layman in the Israelite sacrificial system. Priests were given the privilege of retaining the hide from the burnt offering (7:8). In addition every grain offering baked or cooked would also be for the priests’ consumption (7:9–10). What is specified here is that the officiating priest would have the first rights to these benefits. The matter of distribution of benefits among the priestly order is addressed elsewhere in the Bible (1 Chr 24; Luke 1:8–9) and in rabbinic literature (b. Taʿan. 27a) (Rooker, M. F. (2000). Leviticus (Vol. 3A, pp. 132–133). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.)

HEAVEN is a place on EARTH by Michael E. Wittmer

More than merely commanding individual believers to offer their individual selves directly to God, Paul may also be imploring individual Christians to join their uplifted selves with others in the church so that together they may form a single, united offering to the LORD. It is good to praise and serve God individually, but it’s even better when individuals unite and “with one heart and mouth … glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (p. 119)

God wanted Adam and Eve to participate in his ongoing work of creation, to take the raw materials of a perfect world and arrange them to produce the highest possible benefit. (p. 125)

Another, more serious problem with this approach is that people who seek to use their jobs primarily as witnessing opportunities tend to view their Christianity as something added on to life. They don’t often ponder how obedience to Jesus Christ directly changes the way they work; they merely tack him on to their work. They typically don’t view their jobs as a way to serve Christ, but think that they are only obeying Christ when they ared talking about him with others. Wouldn’t it be better if, rather than viewing Jesus as an add-on, we recognize that as our Lord he wishes to certrally transform the very way we conduct our jobs? (p. 133)

Our vocations are more than a way to earn money or bolster self-esteem; they are a primary way that we serve God in the world. (p. 138)

Acts 26
Paul is given an audience with King Agrippa.
INSIGHT

To repent means to turn around, to go in the opposite direction, or to think opposite thoughts. If you have not received Christ, you must repent to do so. In his defense before King Agrippa and Festus, Paul says he preaches to everyone that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance (v. 20). One cannot repent without changing. Repentance toward Christ brings new birth and the power to change. Have you repented and turned to God?   (QuietWalk)

Scaling. It’s a term used in the world of fitness that allows room for anyone to participate. If the specific exercise is a push-up, for example, then maybe you can do ten in a row, but I can only do four. The instructor’s encouragement to me would be to scale back the push-ups according to my fitness level at the time. We’re not all at the same level, but we can all move in the same direction. In other words, she would say, “Do your four push-ups with all the strength you have. Don’t compare yourself with anyone else. Scale the movement for now, keep doing what you can do, and you may be amazed in time you’re doing seven, and even one day, ten.”

When it comes to giving, the apostle Paul was clear: “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). But his encouragement to the believers in Corinth, and to us, is a variation of scaling. “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart” (v. 7). We each find ourselves at different giving levels, and sometimes those levels change over time. Comparison is not beneficial, but attitude is. Based on where you are, give generously (v. 6). Our God has promised that the disciplined practice of such cheerful giving brings enrichment in every way with a blessed life that results in “thanksgiving to God” (v. 11). By John Blasé  (Our Daily Bread)

FULL AND LASTING JOY

And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.  1 John 1:4
The apostle is anxious that these Christian people, to whom he is writing, should have fullness of joy, though they are in the world, which lies under the power of the evil one.

Now that is the amazing thing that is offered and promised to us in the New Testament. It is by no means a message confined to this epistle. We see it in Paul’s epistle to the Philippians: “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice” (4:4). Our Lord promised in John 16:33, “In the world ye shall have tribulation.” He described the world as an evil place, and He forewarned His followers what to expect from it. He said, “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you”; but His great promise was that He would give them the joy that He Himself possessed. There would be a period at the crucifixion and before the resurrection when they would be unhappy and miserable. “But,” He said, “I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you” (John 16:22). He also said, “These things have I spoken unto you…that your joy might be full” (John 15:11) “the very word that John repeats in his first epistle.
That is Christ’s promise, and perhaps there is nothing that is more characteristic of the book of the Acts of the Apostles than this very note. If you are feeling tired and in need of a spiritual tonic, go to the book of Acts, and there you will find this irrepressible joy that these people had in confirmation of the Lord’s promise!
A Thought to Ponder: Christ described the world as an evil place, but His great promise was that He would give them joy.

(From Fellowship with God pp. 23-24, by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

Forgive Him, Oh Forgive
“Who his own self bore our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)
The third verse of the majestic hymn “Arise, My Soul, Arise” relates how the crucified but risen Intercessor, Christ, pleads with the Father to save a sinner and why His prayers are heard.Five bleeding wounds He bears, Received on Calvary.
They pour effectual prayers; They strongly plead for me.
“Forgive him, oh, forgive,” they cry,
“Nor let that ransomed sinner die.”

When Jesus was crucified, they “pierced [His] hands and [His] feet” (Psalm 22:16) and “pierced his side” with a spear (John 19:34). After His resurrection, His disciples would view these five wounds (Luke 24:39John 20:27). It was from these wounds that His blood flowed, “and without shedding of blood [there] is no remission” of sins. “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many” (Hebrews 9:22, 28). Our text for today declares that it was His “stripes,” literally “wounds,” that heal us of our deadly sin sickness. His death provides life and health and righteousness.
If “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16), surely the pleadings of Christ, a perfectly righteous man, are of infinite strength. “Neither pray I for these alone [i.e., His disciples], but for them also which shall believe on me through their word…[that they] be with me where I am” (John 17:20, 24).
As a truly repentant sinner comes in faith to God seeking forgiveness for his sins, Christ pleads, “Forgive him, oh, forgive.” “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all” (1 Timothy 2:5-6).
