Micah 3

Leaders mistreat God’s people                                  verse 1- 3

 And I said – Hear – I pray you – O head of Jacob

AND you princes of the house of Israel

Is it not for you to know judgment?

Who hate the good – and love the evil

who pluck off their skin from off them

and their flesh from off their bones

Who also eat the flesh of MY people – and flay their skin from off them

and they break their bones – and chop them in pieces

as for the pot – as flesh within the caldron

Disobedient leaders expect the LORD to answer prayers      verse 4

THEN shall they cry to the LORD – BUT HE will NOT HEAR THEM

HE will even HIDE HIS FACE from them at that time

as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings

Leaders receive no answers to prayers                    verse 5- 7

Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets that make MY people err

that bite with their teeth – and cry Peace

and he that puts not into their mouths

they prepare war against him

THEREFORE night shall be unto you – that you shall not have a vision

and it shall be dark unto you – that you shall not divine

and the sun shall go down over the prophets

and the day shall be dark over them

THEN shall the seers be ashamed – and the diviners confounded

YEA – they shall all cover their lips

FOR there is no answer of God

Micah filled with Holy Spirit                                        verse 8

BUT truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD

and of judgment – and of might

to declare unto Jacob his transgressions

and to Israel his sin

Message to leaders                                                      verse 9- 12

Hear this – I pray you, you heads of the house of Israel

and you princes of the house of Israel – that abhor judgment

and pervert all equity

They build up Zion with blood – and Jerusalem

with iniquity

The heads thereof judge for reward

and the priests thereof teach for hire

and the prophets thereof divine for money

YET will they lean upon the LORD – and say

Is not the LORD among us?

none evil can come upon us

THEREFORE shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field

and Jerusalem shall become heaps

and the mountain of the house as the

high places of the forest

COMMENTARY:

                                      DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 1        And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and you princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment? (4941 “judgment” [mishpat] means know right from wrong, decision, dispute, the quality of being free from favoritism, free of self-interest, not bias, not deceptive, or especially conforming to the established standards or rules.)

DEVOTION: Our goal in life should be to be a leader in whatever field the LORD gives us the ability to serve HIM in. HE wants us to be leaders. HE wants us to be faithful to HIM. Our occupation is minister of the LORD in whatever field we earn our money in. People should be able to look at us and see the LORD.

The children of Israel should have been able to look up to their leaders. Their leaders were to know the difference between right and wrong. They were to make sure the people knew the difference too. Leaders are first teachers by example and then by their vocal teaching.

This is not true in our society. There are many individuals who claim to be leaders who cheat people every chance they get. There are individuals who hold one standard for themselves and another standard for those who are around them. They want it all to be in their favor.

We find today that many our leaders in politics, sports and church are going to jail because they are not doing things right. If they don’t do things right what we expect of those who are looking up to them?

All leaders fail at times but the majority of their life should be looked at with the idea that they were trying to be faithful to the LORD. All of us need to pray for our leaders.

CHALLENGE:  Are you learning and teaching the difference between right and wrong?

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 4              Then shall they cry to the LORD, but HE will not hear them: HE will even hide HIS face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings. (5641 “hide” [cathar] means conceal, prevent from being seen or discovered, or conceal oneself carefully)

DEVOTION: There is a false belief out in our world that says that God hears all the prayers that are ever prayed and answers them. This is not what the Bible teaches. God doesn’t hear all prayers. God does not answer all prayers. God sometimes even hides HIS face from HIS servants who are not living their lives that are pleasing to HIM.

In this verse we read that there are people who are crying out to the LORD for deliverance from a problem. It is stated that HE will not hear them.

Why doesn’t HE hear their prayers? Is HE sleeping? Is HE not able to hear them? Is HE limited in the number of prayers that HE can hear at one time? The answer to all these questions is NO!!!

HE only hears the prayers of HIS servants if they are living in accordance to HIS Word. If they are not living in accordance to HIS Word they need to confess their sins and then HE can hear their prayers. In the New Testament we find that a husband’s prayers are not heard if he is not treating his wife well (I Peter 3: 7). There are other passages that deal with the prayers the LORD hears and doesn’t hear. We need to study them, so that, we can give a proper answer to those who want to learn how to pray and receive answers.

CHALLENGE: Is God hiding HIS face from each of us because of our actions?

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 8        But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin. (3581 “power” [koach] means strength, might, force, or ability.)

DEVOTION:  The filling of the Holy Spirit happened even in the Old Testament. Certain people were filled with the Holy Spirit to serve the LORD. All of those who were filled with the Holy Spirit lost the filling because of disobedience. We lose the filling of the Spirit through disobedience. We don’t lose the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as those in the Old Testament did. Once we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit is the sealing of our salvation. Praise the name of the LORD. We can regain our filling of the Holy Spirit through confession. King David prayed for fresh oil from the LORD. Oil again was used to represent the filling of the Holy Spirit.  Our source of strength to serve the LORD daily is the Holy Spirit.

Micah prophesied against the people of Israel. They told him that they didn’t want to hear him because he was telling them the truth. He didn’t care what they thought as he had to answer to the LORD. The LORD was the one giving him strength to face them with the truth.

He included the leaders, priests, prophets, and common man. They were all doing what they wanted. They thought the LORD protected them. They thought they could pray to the LORD for help and HE would give it.

Micah told them that they were not protected. Micah informed them that he was the one with strength from the Holy Spirit to pronounce judgment. He was going to preach concerning the transgressions or sins of Jacob or Israel. They loved to do evil. They hated good. They were the ones who took full advantage of their position in society to hurt those who were poor and needy.

Their false prophets would not have any visions from the LORD. They had NO ANSWER from the LORD!!! They had to fake having answers to prayer and visions from the LORD.

We can have the fullness of strength in the LORD in our lives to spread the Good News of the gospel. We have the ANSWER from the LORD. Micah was being obedience to the LORD.

When we are obedience to the LORD HE can use us to reach others with HIS message. We have to be willing and obedient servants of the LORD. What has the LORD shared with each of us lately? Are we sharing it with others???

CHALLENGE: Remember that we receive our strength from the LORD alone. With HIS strength we can do all things that the LORD gives us to do. We can even face those who claim to be followers but lie to those around them about what the BIBLE states as truth.

: 11      The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? None evil can come upon us. (3701 “money” [keceph] means silver, price, shekel, or talents.)

DEVOTION:  Corruption was true in the early days of the children of Israel. Here we find that the corruption of the use of silver was going on in Micah’s day. Money is not the root of all evil; it is the love of money that is the root of evil.

Each group of leaders is only thinking of themselves in relationship to the people and their silver. The judges were taking bribes to give those with the most silver a judgment in their favor. The priests were just teaching those who could pay them for their services. Even the prophets were going to give the people what they wanted to hear for silver.

Today we seem to have the same problem. When I returned to seminary in the ‘90’s there were students there who said they wouldn’t go to a church unless they were paid so much money. They would not even go to a small church to preach if it didn’t paid them enough to make their effort worthwhile. It was sad. I asked them who they were serving. They said the LORD but thought that their time and effort was worth the price they wanted to receive.

One thing we find throughout Scripture is that the LORD is the one who provides all we need. It is not the church that provides the pastor with the finances he needs. It is the LORD.

If a leader thinks that he has to please the people who are paying him, he is in the wrong occupation. Ministry is provided for by the LORD alone. If the church pays too little they will answer to the LORD but the LORD will provide enough for the pastor to live on. If the pastor takes too much money from the church, he will answer to the LORD.

CHALLENGE: Money should NEVER be the goal of anyone serving the LORD. The LORD has promised to supply all we need. We can hold HIM to HIS promise.

QUOTES regarding passage

4 Because they had so treated the poor, these merciless authorities would not be heard when they cried to the Lord. Those who violated the stipulation of God’s covenant could not expect him to maintain the blessings of the covenant. It was disobedience that took the people from the ground of the covenant and marred their relationship to God (cf. Ps 18:41; Prov 1:28; cf. note at 6:8). (McComiskey, T. E. (1986). Micah. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Daniel and the Minor Prophets (Vol. 7, p. 417). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.)

____________________________________________________________

3:4 “Then” and “At that time” refer to the time of divine judgment. When that day comes, the guilty leaders will cry out to the Lord for help in their time of need, but he will not respond—“a just retribution on those who refused to hearken to the cry of the poor and needy.” It is the principle of Prov 21:13 at work: “If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, / he too will cry out and not be answered.” The Lord will hide his face (of favor and blessing) from such heartless people. It is punishment in kind, measure for measure. The practice of injustice (or sin in any form) leads to alienation from God (Isa 59:1–4). Unfortunately corrupt civil leaders are still very much with us. The verse closes with the reason for the awful silence of God: their “evil” and cruel behavior (see v. 2). They have refused to honor their covenant obligations. (Barker, K. L. (1999). Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah (Vol. 20, p. 76). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.)

___________________________________________________________

3:4. Because of Israel’s sins a time would come when they would cry out to the Lord but He would not answer them (cf. v. 7). Micah was speaking of the time when Israel would be taken into captivity. The false prophets and leaders had refused to believe that the Lord would actually follow through and punish them for their behavior. However, when the Captivity came they would realize that God was actually punishing them. Then it would be too late for Him to deliver them. They would have to live with the consequences of their actions, enduring the punishment for their evil. Of course God listens to the prayers of His people, but sometimes He refuses to relieve them immediately from the consequences of their actions. (Martin, J. A. (1985). Micah. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 1482). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

_________________________________________________________________

As with Micah’s other two messages, this second message opens with a call for the people to “hear” what the Lord would say through His servant (1:2; 6:1). It’s as though Micah had shouted, “Listen! God is speaking! This is important!” The statement reminds us of the Lord’s repeated admonition, “Who has ears to hear, let him hear!” or the warning in Hebrews 12:25: “See that you do not refuse Him who speaks” (nkjv).

It’s a dangerous thing to turn a deaf ear to the voice of God when He speaks through His Word. “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts” (3:7–8 nkjv). All creation responds to the voice of God and gladly obeys His will except man made in God’s image! Yet the Father lovingly says to us, “Now therefore, listen to Me, My children; pay attention to the words of My mouth” (Prov. 7:24 nkjv).

Micah opened his message by rebuking the civil authorities (Micah 3:1–4), men who were not only permitting the wealthy to exploit the poor but were also doing it themselves! Leaders are supposed to love the good and hate the evil, but these men were just the opposite: they “hate the good, and love the evil” (v. 2). Ideal leaders are described as “able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness” (Ex. 18:21 nkjv). Micah’s contemporary Amos wrote, “Seek good and not evil, that you may live.… Hate evil, love good; establish justice in the gate” (Amos 5:14–15 nkjv; see Prov. 8:13). The city gate was the place where the elders met to settle disputes and make official decisions (Ruth 4:1ff). If there was no justice in the cities, there could be no justice in the land.

The description of these rulers’ actions reminds you more of ravenous beasts than of human beings. Instead of being faithful shepherds who protected the flock (Micah 2:12; 7:14), they attacked the sheep, skinned them alive, butchered them, chopped them up, and made stew out of them! But the day would come when these wolves in shepherd’s clothing would cry out for God’s mercy, but no mercy would be given. “Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide My face from them, and they shall be devoured” (Deut. 31:17). (Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). Be concerned (pp. 97–98). Colorado Springs, CO: Chariot Victor.)

It is a solemn thing when the leaders of God’s people cause them to err; when those who should have been a bulwark for the truth turn away therefrom, “speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.”

They who should have known judgment, and who were raised up of God to rule the nation in righteousness, were the very ones who were leading the mass astray. Often has it been so in the history of the Church, as well as of Israel. Therefore the need to test all that is taught or practised, by the only infallible rule, the unerring Word of God. If Christians are content to be styled “the laity,” and leave their spiritual interests in the hands of their guides, they have themselves to blame if they are led in wrong paths. Each is responsible to exercise himself unto godliness, and to try the things that differ.

It too frequently happens that leaders become pretentious and haughty, regarding themselves as “the clergy,” whose special province it is to find sustenance in “the ministry,” forgetting that to minister is to serve, not to lord it over possessions. No pride is worse than spiritual pride. No pretension is more to be abhorred than ecclesiastical pretension. But there are never wanting vain, self-confident men, who are ever ready to arrogate to themselves high-sounding titles and powers if the people love to have it so. And it is solemn indeed to realize that it generally is the people themselves who are responsible for this kind of thing, because of the readiness with which they accept the ipse dixit of some gifted uninspired man, rather than to search the Word for themselves, that they may find therein set forth the path for their feet.

Here, the people were indifferent, and the princes lived recklessly, despising the “lower classes,” and flourishing in their presumption and avarice. In place of caring for the flock of God, as those who must give an account, they looked upon them as their lawful prey, “flaying the skin from off them” (vers. 2, 3).

One is reminded of the grim jest of Pope Leo X, who, it is said, made the remark to his companion princes of the church, “What a profitable thing this myth about Jesus Christ has been to us!” And all because the Bible had been kept from the people, and they were willing it should be so.

But the hour of judgment is coming, when all such must answer to the great Shepherd of the sheep for their unholy ways. “Then shall they cry unto the Lord, but He will not hear them: He will even hide His face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings” (ver. 4). (Ironside, H. A. (1909). Notes on the Minor Prophets. (pp. 229–231). Neptune, NJ: Loizeaux Brothers.)

Ver. 4. Then shall they cry unto the Lord, but he will not hear them, &c.] When all the above evils threatened them in the preceding chapters shall come upon them; when the enemy shall invade their land, besiege their cities, and take them, and they, their families and substance, just ready to fall into their hands, they shall cry unto the Lord; or pray unto him, as the Targum, in the time of their distress; but he will not hear their prayer, so as to answer it according to their desire; that is, he will not save them from imminent danger, but deliver them up, them, and all that belong unto them, into the hands of such that shall use them as they have done others: he will even hide his face from them at that time; turn his back upon them, and a deaf ear to them, and shew them no favour, nor grant them any help and protection: as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings he’ll punish them according to the law of retaliation; as when the poor cried unto them, when they were stripping them of their substance, and they would not hearken to them, so now, when they cry unto the Lord in their distress, he’ll not hearken to them; and as they turned their backs, and hid their faces from those that were afflicted by them, and would shew them no favour, so will the Lord deal with them; and as they exercised the utmost cruelty and barbarity that could be done, they will now be given up into the hands of cruel and merciless men, that will use them in like manner: or, because they have done ill in their doings; to the poor, whose cause God will defend and vindicate. FROM MY READING:

Forget whether the members of our churches have any real depth or substance to them; we just want to be able to measure and count the three Bs: buildings, budgets and butts in the seat. The Bible does say a few things about churches growing in those ways, but today this has become the prevailing mind-set of ministry in evangelicalism, and it is a biblically perverted, missionally distorted mind-set. This avoidance of the difficult things of Scripture – of sinfulness and hell and God’s notable severity – is idolatrous and cowardly. (p. 41)

Someone who says hell cannot be real, or we can’t all deserve it even if it is real, because God is love is saying that the name and the renown and the glory of Christ aren’t that big of a deal. Is this the approach we want to take, that hell for eternity is the wrong punishment for our belittlement of the glory of God? If so, in essence we say, “The punishment doesn’t fit the crime because the crime isn’t that big of a deal.” Is this justifiable logic? No, it’s just a slight case of refusal to be satisfied with the all-sufficiency of the God of the universe. (p. 45, the Explicit Gospel by Matt Chandler)

PREPARE: Living Your Faith In An Increasingly HOSTILE CULTURE

The pagan Romans resented Christians because the believers didn’t conform to the rest of society. They didn’t participate in the pagan cultural practices that were considered the norm, therefore they were viewed as odd, peculiar, narrow, and deserving of societal punishment. (p. 109)

In this verse he uses a rare verbal form (optative) that essentially says, “You shouldn’t suffer for doing good in an ideal world. But in our fallen world, it could happen. And if you should suffer, you’re blessed.” (113)

In his research on the subject, Scott Cunningham sees five major theological themes on persecution emerging in Acts.

  1. Persecution is part of God’s plan.
  2. Persecution is the rejection of God’s agents.
  3. The persecuted stand in continuity with God’s prophets.
  4. Persecution is an integral consequence of following Jesus.
  5. Persecution is the occasion of divine triumph.(p. 116)

“When people tell me they are having difficulty discerning God’s will for their life, I want to ask one question: How much quiet, still time are you spending in God’s presence, listening to Him through prayer and His Word? I do not believe God wants us to be confused about His will and calling for our life. But I also believe that God is not interested in competing with the roar of our culture in order to get our attention and be heard. If we spend more time listening to the voices all around us—musicians, celebrities, commentators, friends, and yes, preachers—than we spend listening to Him, it’s no surprise that we are often confused.” –David Jeremiah

Isaiah 6
Isaiah is commissioned to become a prophet to Israel.
INSIGHT
Isaiah sees the Lord in a terrifying vision which makes him acutely aware of his sinfulness and God’s holiness. The Lord takes away his sin—seeing the repentance of his heart—and then commissions Isaiah to serve Him as a prophet. This event illustrates how the Lord calls His servants. First, He reveals Himself through His Word. When the hearer receives the Scriptures, he becomes aware of his sin and asks God for forgiveness and salvation. God then sends him into the world to take the message of salvation to others.

THE AUTHORITY OF THE BIBLE

If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scriptures cannot be broken….
John 10:35

Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms–Christ accepted it all and asked the disciples to consider its teaching concerning Himself. And He expounded it to them. I refer to John 10:35, where He tells us, “If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scriptures cannot be broken….” So in the last analysis our authority for our understanding of inspiration is to be found in the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. That was His view of the Scriptures.
Now I know there are many who want to ask a question at this point. What about the various differences, what about certain discrepancies, and so on? Well, there is a very comforting answer to all that. There are, as we have them in our versions, certain things that we simply cannot explain, and it is our business to say that quite readily and frankly. But let me hasten to add that most of these so-called difficulties and discrepancies that the critics bring forward can be explained; indeed, most of them have been explained. Many of them have been explained in the last few years as a result of archaeology and further linguistic understanding of the Scriptures.
Still, there are a certain few differences that remain, but it is significant that they are never with respect to doctrine or historical facts. It is a matter of figures or something that is comparatively unimportant and can be explained quite readily–the mistake, perhaps, of a copyist or of some translator. There is nothing that in any way interferes with vital, essential doctrine. So what we affirm and state is this: The original documents, as first given, are inerrant and infallible.
Finally, you cannot prove to anybody that the Bible is uniquely and divinely inspired. Ultimately people have to be enlightened by the Holy Spirit.
A Thought to Ponder: The original documents, as first given, are inerrant and infallible.

The Designed Creation
“Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?” (Psalm 94:8-9)
The concept of evolution, according to this verse, is nothing but brute-like foolishness. If an automobile presupposes an automaker, and a clock implies a clockmaker, surely the infinitely more intricate and complex eyes and ears of living creatures require an eye-maker and an ear-maker! “The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them” (Proverbs 20:12).
The most basic of all scientific laws—the law of cause and effect (no effect greater than its cause)—becomes utmost nonsense if the cosmos is the product of chaos and the universe evolved by chance. “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).
Every creature, from the single-cell amoebae to the amazing human body, bears the impress of intricate planning and construction. The notion that such complex structures could evolve by random mutations and natural selection is simply a measure of the audacity of human rebellion and the absurdity of humanistic reasoning. Such things never happen in the real world, and there is no real scientific evidence whatever for “vertical” evolution from one kind to a higher kind. The only genuine evidence for evolution is the fact that the leaders of intellectualism believe it, and the only reason they believe it is their frantic desire to escape God. “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:22).
The ear did not “evolve”; it was planted. The eye did not “happen by chance”; it was formed. Every wise man and woman will say with the psalmist, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well” (Psalm 139:14).
