PROVERBS 16
Plans should come from the LORD verse 1- 4
The preparation of the heart in man
AND the answer of the tongue is from the LORD
All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes
BUT the LORD weighs the spirits
Commit your works to the LORD
AND your thoughts shall be established
The LORD has made all things for HIMSELF
YEA even the WICKED for the day of evil
Proud will be punished by the LORD verse 5
Every one that is PROUD in heart
is an abomination to the LORD
though hand join in hand
he shall not be unpunished
Fear of the LORD causes departure from evil verse 6
By mercy and truth iniquity is purged
AND by the FEAR OF THE LORD
men depart from evil
Pleasing the LORD brings peace verse 7
When a man’s ways please the LORD
HE makes even his enemies
to be at peace with him
Money isn’t everything verse 8
Better is a little with righteousness
THAN great revenues without right
Righteous steps ordered by the LORD verse 9
A man’s heart devises his way
BUT the LORD directs his steps
Instructions regarding kings verse 10- 15
A divine sentence is in the lips of the king
his mouth transgresses not in judgment
A just weight and balance are the LORD’S
all the weights of the bag are HIS work
It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness
for the throne is established by righteousness
Righteous lips are the delight of kings
AND they love him that speaks right
The wrath of a king is as messengers of death
BUT a WISE man will pacify it
In the light of the king’s countenance is life
AND his favor is as a cloud of the later rain
Wisdom is more precious than gold verse 16
How much better is it to get wisdom than gold!
AND to get understanding
rather to be chosen than silver!
Upright depart from evil verse 17
The highway of the UPRIGHT is to depart from evil
he that keeps his way preserves his soul
Pride vs. humble verse 18- 19
PRIDE goes before destruction
AND a HAUGHTY spirit before a fall
Better it is to be of a HUMBLE spirit with the lowly
THAN to divide the spoil with the PROUD
Wise vs. fool verse 20- 24
He that handles a matter wisely shall find good
AND whoso trusts in the LORD
HAPPY IS he
The WISE in heart shall be called PRUDENT
AND the sweetness of the lips increases learning
Understanding is a wellspring of life to him that has it
BUT the instruction of FOOLS is folly
The heart of the WISE teaches his mouth
AND adds learning to his lips
Pleasant words are as – an honeycomb
sweet to the soul AND health to the bones
Good mouth encourages health verse 25- 26
There is a way that seems right to a man
BUT the end thereof is the ways of death
He that labors labors for himself
for his mouth craves it of him
SINFUL MEN DESCRIBED verse 27- 30
An UNGODLY man digs up evil
AND in his lips there is as a burning fire
A FROWARD man sows strife
AND a WHISPERER separates chief friends
A VIOLENT man entices his neighbor
AND leads him into the way that is not good
He shuts his eyes to device forward things – moving his lips
he brings evil to pass
Age can produce wisdom verse 31
The hoary head is a crown of glory
if it be found in the way of righteousness
Anger needs to be controlled verse 32
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty
AND he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city
Future in hands of the LORD verse 33
The lot is cast into the lap
BUT the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD
COMMENTARY:
DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers
: 4 The LORD hath made all things for HIMSELF: YEA, even the WICKED for the day of evil (3117 “day” [yowm] means times, 24 hour period, time period, or chronicles.)
DEVOTION: The Bible teaches that the LORD made everything. It records the six morning and evenings of creation. Each twenty-four hour period was used by God to create specific things/animals/persons. On the sixth twenty-four hour period HE created man and woman.
HE called them man and woman. Adam named his wife Eve. She was the mother of all living humans. They had two sons, Cain and Abel. Abel offered a proper sacrifice but Cain offered a sacrifice unacceptable to the LORD. He got angry and killed his brother.
So we see that Adam and Eve fell in the garden of Eden and their sin carried over to their children. This has taken place until this present moment and will continue until the end of the age.
There is a coming time period when the LORD will judge everyone for what they have done here on this earth. Those who are followers of the LORD will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ to receive crowns and rewards for their service to the LORD. Those who are not followers of the LORD will stand before the Great White Throne Judgment and will receive punishment for their rejections of Jesus Christ.
We don’t know when the time period will happen but a time period when evil is judged is going to happen. The LORD planned such a time before the foundation of the world. HE has not been surprised by any actions that have happened throughout history. There is a planned time for evil to be judged. If HE planned it IT will happen.
The majority of the world reject the offer of salvation by God. They will have to face the consequences of their actions. Our responsibility is to warn them and what they do with their warning is up to them.
Warn all those who are close to you about the coming time of judgment. Tell them that they don’t have to face the judgment of eternity hell if they make a decision for Christ.
CHALLENGE: Christ alone is the answer to escaping the judgment of Hell. Warn those you love.
DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers
: 9 A man’s heart devises his way: but the LORD directs his steps. (3559 “directs” [kuwn] means to be erect, confirm, appoint, decide, order, fashion, be fitted, frame, ordain, establish, or to be firm.)
DEVOTION: How many days ahead do you have planned? Have you figured out your life in a way that will make you happy? What would truly make you happy? Man thinks that he is independent and free. When we realize that we have none of these tracts it disturbs us. We are not independent because we are dependent on our families, friends and employers for our financial health. We are dependent on our families for our emotional health. We are dependent our spiritual directors for our spiritual health.
If we are brought up in the wrong family – there is no support. If we marry the wrong spouse – they are no support. If we attend the wrong church – we can be heading in the wrong direction spiritually. We depend on those around us for help.
The LORD gives his children a frame of reference to work with when we follow Christ. The frame of reference is the Bible. If we listen to the teachings of the Holy Spirit through the Bible – we will grow. Our foundation is important.
Our human foundation might be flawed but our spiritual foundation in Christ is not flawed. Is the LORD fashioning our lives today? HE brings order to our chaotic world. Or are we trying to do things on our own? Doing it on our own brings more chaos to our world. Trust CHRIST!!!!
CHALLENGE: Our total life belongs to the LORD. Our fighting HIM only shows our ignorance. Don’t be ignorant of the facts of life!
DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers
: 21 The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increases learning. (995 “prudent” [biyn] means have understanding, to be discerning, instructing, examining, to pay attention, to be knowing and able to comprehend meaning, or insightful.)
DEVOTION: There are many ways to teach truth to people. One is to just list data for students to copy down and then memorize for a test. This is not what is being told here. This is someone who understands the data but presents it in such a way as to have the students genuinely understand how it applies to life.
A teacher that can present facts that help the students remember them for the rest of their lives because they have applied the truth to their everyday life is amazing. Too often we find that teachers just want students to pass a test but fail in life. Solomon wants his son to pass in life and recommends teachers to teach with this in mind.
The way things are presented affect learning also in this verse. If the teacher has a loving concern for the students they can tell and will listen more intelligently. If the teacher doesn’t show that he cares for what the student learns because it is only a job than the students are less likely to apply what they learn in the class after they pass the test and move on to another subject.
Our teaching needs to be done with love and with a good understanding of what we are teaching or it will not influence future generations with the truth of the Word of God.
CHALLENGE: Remember that EVERYONE is a teacher whether they are in a classroom or not. People are watching you to see if you genuinely care about their growth in the LORD. Do you care??? Your presentation will show it.

: 28 A forward man sows strife: and a whisperer separates chief friends. (5372 “whisperer” [nirgan] means talebearer, murmur, backbite, slander, talebearer, backbiter, to make complaining remarks or noises under one’s breath, or grumble.)
DEVOTION: Have you ever met an individual who complains about everything you are doing or saying but seems to think that everything they are doing and saying is always right?
We have individuals in our life, whether family or friends, wo seem to like to be a negative about everything everyone else is doing except themselves. This individual is one who like to sow strife or problems with everything others are suggesting.
Also, one of their tracts is to go before other’s back and cause problems. The word here is used of those who like to slander other people or are talebearer or just like to grumble any chance they get.
These characteristics should not be found in those who are genuine followers of Jesus Christ. We need to be encouragers of others and helpers of those who are struggling. Our world doesn’t need individuals who are always negative instead of finding positive things to help others.
Genuine believers should be individuals who sow unity rather than strife. It is sometimes good to disagree but if it is a habit without end it needs to change because it is not encouraging but discouraging.
Our goal as genuine believers is to sow accord with a Biblical solution to every problem that is presented to a group or church or family.
This can only be done when there is a problem with prayer and seeking the face of the LORD with fellow believers to solve any problem that may come up in a family or church.
If there are people who are talking behind others backs it needs to stop and corrected, so that there can be unity in a church or a home.
CHALLENGE: If you are one who has a tendency to be negative then ask the LORD to help you present positive answers to problems. If you like to sow strife then as the LORD to help you to stop.

QUOTES regarding passage
The verb refers to knowledge which is superior to the mere gathering of data. It is necessary to know how to use knowledge one possesses (Pirke Abot 3:12). The verb yādaʿ (q.v.) can also mean “understanding” in the sense of ability (e.g. Esau as a skilful hunter). It can also mean “to be perceptive,” (Ps 73:22). However, yādaʿ generally describes the process whereby one gains knowledge through experience with objects and circumstances. bîn is a power of judgment and perceptive insight and is demonstrated in the use of knowledge.
A person can perceive pertinent data with his senses: with his eyes he can discern (Prov 7:7, with his ears he can understand words (Prov 29:19). Understanding can also be said to feel (Ps 58:10) and discernment can even be sensed through taste (Job 6:30).
It is possible to hear without perceiving. Daniel did not understand what he had heard (Dan 12:8). It is said in a derogatory sense that the wicked cannot understand the knowledge he knows (Prov 29:7). Other instances emphasize an attentive observation or consideration: Moses accusingly asked the people to consider diligently the years of experience of all generations (Deut 32:7), and David perceived the destination of the wicked (Ps 73:17).
The Hiphil stem especially emphasizes ability to understand. Ezra read the word of God in the presence of men, women, and those able to understand, i.e. old enough (Neh 8:3). God can make a person understand his ways (Ps 119:34, 73). His angel came to give understanding to Daniel (Dan 10:14). The participial form refers to a teacher, i.e. one who gives discernment to his students (Ezra 8:16). From a number of instances, insight or moral understanding is a gift from God (Dan 2:21) and is not the fruit of empiricism. It is ethical discernment. A person prays for it (Ps 119:34) and since this insight is uniquely God’s, he can reveal or conceal it (Isa 29:14). The seat of insight is the heart and it is the heart which discerns (or fails to discern) the works of the Lord (Ps 28:5), the fear of the Lord (Prov 2:5), righteousness and justice (Prov 2:9), and his will as his word is obeyed (Ps 111:10).
While understanding is a gift of God, it does not come automatically. The possession of it requires a persistent diligence. It is more than IQ; it connotes character. One is at fault if he doesn’t have it and in fact, not to pursue it will incur God’s punishment (Prov 2:1f; Ruth 1:21f.). When one acts on the objective presentations of God’s revelation, he will attain the ideal of the significance of understanding. (Goldberg, L. (1999). 239 בִּין. R. L. Harris, G. L. Archer Jr., & B. K. Waltke (Eds.), Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament (electronic ed., pp. 103–104). Chicago: Moody Press.)

Learning (av, rv), here and in 23, should be translated persuasiveness (rsv), as in 7:21 (av: ‘fair speech’); see subject-study: (Wisdom, 1(5) ), p. 35. This proverb, and more plainly verse 23, speaks of the impression which true wisdom cannot fail to make. The wise man (not necessarily the clever one) will get known (a) for his discerning eye (av: prudent) and (b) for his telling speech (21b, 23). Those who lack judgment or who talk above their hearers’ heads need not pine for recognition; only for wisdom. (Kidner, D. (1964). Proverbs: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 17, p. 114). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.)

21 Wise speech will build a reputation for competence and enhance influence. It leads to the reputation of being “discerning” (nāḇôn), and its influence coming from sweet or “pleasant words” (meṯeq śep̱āṯayim i.e., gracious and friendly words) is to “promote instruction” (yōsîp̱ leqaḥ or increase appropriation)—viz., the teaching will be well received because it is persuasive. (Ross, A. P. (1991). Proverbs. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs (Vol. 5, p. 1009). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.)

Ver. 21.—The wise in heart shall be called prudent. True wisdom is recognized and acknowledged as such, especially when it has the gift of expressing itself appropriately (see on ch. 24:8). The sweetness (ch. 27:9) of the lips increaseth learning. People listen to instruction at the mouth of one who speaks well and winningly. Such a one augments knowledge in others, and in himself too, for he learns by teaching. Knowledge ought not to be buried in one’s own mind, but produced on fit occasions and in suitable words for the edification of others. Ecclus. 20:30, “Wisdom that is hid, and treasure that is hoarded up, what profit is in them both?” (see Matt. 5:15). Septuagint, “The wise and prudent they call worthless (φαύλους; but they who are sweet in word shall hear more.” Wise men are called bad and worthless by the vulgar herd, either because they do not impart all they know, or because they are envied for their learning; but those who are eloquent and gracious in speech shall receive much instruction from what they hear, every one being ready to converse with them and impart any knowledge which they possess. (Spence-Jones, H. D. M. (Ed.). (1909). Proverbs (pp. 313–314). London; New York: Funk & Wagnalls Company.)

16:21 sweetness of speech. “Honeyed words,” which reflect intelligence, judiciousness, and discernment in speech. (MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (2006). The MacArthur study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Pr 16:21). Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers.)

21. The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.
The heart is the proper seat of wisdom. There “it dwells with prudence.”3 Their combined exercise is essential to the completeness of a Christian profession. Intellectual wisdom without a prudential application tends to no practical end. The pervading want of prudence gives needless offence to the gospel, and destroys influential weight of character. Often also do spiritual affections run to waste for want of prudent direction or discipline. Moral habits from this defect become either morbid or hardened. There is either a superstitious scrupulousness, or a reckless indifference; sometimes a conscience about every thing, sometimes about nothing. Prudent wisdom gives establishment to the whole system. The eye directs the foot, and we walk safely upon firm ground.
These internal qualities gain increasing acceptance from external gifts. “When we are enriched with all utterance, as well as with all knowledge;” when we are enabled to clothe our thoughts in a flowing style, and clear expression—this doubtless gives a great advantage in communicating knowledge.5 The sweetness of the lips increaseth learning. Ambrose’s mellifluous eloquence arrested and gradually brought conviction to Augustine’s mind. Yet we would not confine this advantage to natural eloquence. Wisdom is in the heart as in a treasury, and “of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.” When therefore “the heart is inditing a good matter, speaking of the things touching the King; the tongue”—like the Apostle’s8—without any adventitious attractiveness, “is the pen of a ready writer.” And when without measure “grace was poured upon the lips”10 of the King himself, what wonder, that he should have constrained the admiration, and fixed the attention,12 of his hearers! How inestimable the privilege of his true disciples to sit at his feet, increasing learning from the sweetness of his lips! (Bridges, C. (1865). An Exposition of the Book of Proverbs (p. 209). New York: Robert Carter & Brothers.)
_____________________________________________________________
The original word forbids our taking “prudent” in the sense primarily of cautious, safe against indiscretions; and requires the sense, intelligent, discerning.—“Shall be called,” according to the common Hebrew idiom, means shall really be so, and not merely, shall be so reputed and spoken of. The distinction is that between character and reputation.—“Sweetness of lips,” signifies pleasant words and an agreeable manner of speaking. Such sweetness gives the teacher a special charm, and augments his teaching power so that he actually teaches not only better but more thereby. (Cowles, H. (1884). Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon, with Notes, Critical, Explanatory, and Practical (p. 111). New York: D. Appleton and Company.)

16:27–30 Verses 27–30 describe the man who has evil schemes and are another thematic unity. Verses 27–29 concern the evil machinations of the scoundrel, the perverse man, and the violent man, and v. 30 is a conclusion or commentary on those three descriptions. The winking eye and pursed lips of v. 30 may be taken either as signals among conspirators or as a general statement of shiftiness in the facial mannerisms of scheming people. The point may be that the reader should learn to read the faces of others in order to spot the three kinds of evil men described in vv. 27–29. (Garrett, D. A. (1993). Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of songs (Vol. 14, p. 157). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.)

1 Timothy 6
The quest for godliness motivates us to “fight the good fight” of faith while we live on earth.
INSIGHT
If any of us could have three wishes, most of us would include wealth as one of those wishes. Everything else being equal, we would rather be rich than poor. Yet that very desire is a snare – so much so that Paul urges Timothy to flee the love of money and “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness” (v. 11). And he adds: “I urge you . . . that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing” (vv. 13-14). If we have wealth, we are to use it compassionately. If we do not have wealth, we are to be content.

Total Abstinence
“Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.” (1 Peter 2:11)
The command to abstain occurs only a few times in the New Testament, but there are three occurrences that are especially relevant for Christians today. One of these is 1 Thessalonians 4:3: “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication.” The Greek word here actually applies to any type of sexual relationship outside of marriage, and the command is not merely for temperance or for “love” in one’s non-marital sexual relationships, but for total abstinence. This exhortation is perhaps needed more today than at any time since the days of pagan Rome, even for Christians and, unfortunately, Christian leaders. But that is not all. In the words of our text, we are also urgently exhorted to “abstain from fleshly lusts” since these carnal desires are in mortal combat with our very souls. One must avoid situations that might initiate or encourage fornication or its kindred activities.
But even that is not sufficient for the serious Christian man or woman. “Now we exhort you, brethren, . . . Abstain from all appearance of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:14, 22). The word here means anything that in outward form might appear to be evil, regardless of whether it is really wrong in itself or not. The Lord desires that we “adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (Titus 2:10) and that we “give none offense” (1 Corinthians 10:32).
A believer cannot afford to be careless in this warfare against his soul. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Party Down?
I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud. ISAIAH 13:11
After deciding on a ballerina theme for her daughter’s sixth birthday party, a young mother drove all over town to find little dancers for the cake. She even added 50 little Beefeaters (those fancy-dressed guards) around the edges, layering them in white icing and peppermint trim.
Only one catch: The kids at the party wouldn’t eat it. They wanted to play. This comes from the “disaster story” file gathered by a parent’s group in St. Paul, Minnesota, that is trying to curb the runaway epidemic of outlandish birthday parties for kids.
There are more: A one-year-old whose gift opening lasted more than two hours (she slept through most of it). Seven-year-olds picked up in stretch limos.
A six-year-old who took one look at the contents of his gift bag and declared, “This is a rip-off!”
Listen, I’m all for having fun and making memories. The Raineys have always been high on celebrations and traditions. We love turning milestones into unforgettable moments. But I find myself applauding this group’s ideas for ramping down the competition, stress and showmanship of children’s party planning. In some areas of the country, it’s way over the top!
The group suggests, for example, holding parties without gift bags for everyone who attends. (As one mom said, “Do they really need another pencil, another rubber ball, another whistle?”) They also endorse inviting kids only, not their parents, and letting them just go outside and play rather than trying to orchestrate fun with wildly elaborate games and activities.
Happiness is being together as family and friends, not feeling the pressure to turn your backyard into a five-star amusement park.
