Psalm 119 Waw

JUDGMENTS OF GOD                                                   verses 41-43

Let YOUR mercies come also to me, O LORD, even YOUR salvation,

according to YOUR word.

So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproaches me:

for I trust in YOUR word.

And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,

for I have hoped in YOUR judgments.

LAW OF GOD                                                                 verses 44- 46

So shall I keep YOUR law continually forever and ever.

And I will walk at liberty: for I seek YOUR precepts.

I will speak of YOUR testimonies also before kings,

and will not be ashamed.

COMMANDMENTS OF GOD                           verses 47- 48

And I will delight myself in YOUR commandments,

which I have loved.

My hands also will I lift up to YOUR commandments,

which I have loved, and I will meditate in YOUR statutes.

COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 41      Let YOUR mercies come also to me, O LORD, even YOUR salvation, according to YOUR word. (2617 “mercies” [checed] means kindness, lovingkindness, goodness, kindly, loyalty, joint obligation, faithfulness, goodness, graciousness, or an unfailing kind of love)

DEVOTION:  We all want the LORD to show us kindness each day of our life after we became a genuine follower of HIM.

The Psalmist is asking the LORD to come to him with goodness. We want to have the LORD show us goodness each day. HE has this available to us if we come to HIM and ask.

HE wants us to understand that one of the benefits of HIS salvation through Christ is that HE is willing to forgive us of sin and continue to work in our life once we have made a genuine commitment to HIM.

There are so many people who believe that they are followers of the LORD when in reality they have never made a commitment to HIM that means anything to them. They continue to life their life the way they want to instead of the way the LORD wants them to live.

It takes something drastic to get their attention and then they fully understand what it means to follow HIM. The children of Israel were just like us or we are just like them because we have to have judgment before HE gets our attention and then we search what it means to be a genuine follower of HIM.

HE extends kindness to us regularly to show that HE has a genuine desire that we are genuine followers of HIM

CHALLENGE: Because the LORD understands our frame HE knows that HE has to get our attention to cause us to genuinely follow HIM.

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 42      So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproaches me: for I trust in YOUR word. (5772 “answer”                [‘ownah] means to reply, to give evidence, testify, to react verbally, as to the question or in giving                    some other kind of response, or declare)

DEVOTION: We are individuals who like answers as quick as we can get them regarding anything that is happening in our life. We want to know right now and not have to wait any amount of time for an answer to our questions.

Here we have the Psalmist saying that he is going to wait on the LORD for an answer before he gives it to any individual asking him questions.

There are many people who want to hurt those who are trying to follow the LORD. They look at every detail of our life to find fault with us but we need to turn those individuals and their comments to the LORD and ask HIM for wisdom on how to answer them in a Biblical manner, so that, we can show them the way of salvation.

Those who are giving us a hard time are usually those who think they are believers but are not genuine in their life with HIM and so they have to look for faults in those who are genuine and cause them to doubt their relationship with the LORD.

They are not working for the LORD but for the devil most of the time. There are genuine believer who try to help those who are struggling but they are doing it in love and with help to the individual they are questioning.

Today we have to continue to study to show ourselves approved of the LORD each day through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

CHALLENGE:   If we don’t have answers we need to go to the LORD in prayer and ask HIM to give us the answers we need through the ministry of the Word and those who are more mature than us.

____________________________________________________________________

: 45      And I will walk at liberty: for I seek YOUR precepts (7342 “liberty” [rachab] means a place noted for its vastness with implications also of safety and freedom, spacious, large, open, extensive, gaping, roomy, or pertaining to width.)

DEVOTION:  God wants us to know that once we have made a commitment to HIM that the spiritual world is open to us and HE is willing to cause us to grow at a rate that we have never seen before because of this opening for us to understand HIS will for our life.

We have the ability to go into any Biblical church and learn the Word of God through the preaching of the Bible. We have the ability to go into Christian book store or books for sale on the internet and find a subject that we want to know more about and through the ministry of the Holy Spirit be led to books that can help us.

Remember that there are many books that call themselves “Christian” but they are not teaching the truth of the Word of God. The Holy Spirit gives genuine believers discernment in this area to help them know when a teaching is wrong if they ask HIM.

God wants our walk with HIM to be one that is a blessing. HE also knows that we can grow through hardship and sometimes HE sends those into our life for us to get down on our knees and ask for more help from HIM.

We have to question ourselves regarding our study of the Bible. Only we genuinely know how often we are digging into the Word of God and praying for HIS answers to our questions. HE gives us freedom and we can use it for HIS glory or for our own wandering.

CHALLENGE: How was your walk with the LORD yesterday? How was your walk with the LORD last week? You know the answer to those questions. HE wants us to grow and walk in a way that is pleasing to HIM each day.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 47      And I will delight myself in YOUR commandments, which I have loved.  (8173 “delight” [sha’a] means to gladden, to enjoy oneself, to take a high degree of pleasure or mental satisfaction in, treat fondly, or take joy in.)

DEVOTION:   What makes you happy or excited? What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? What is your favorite thing to do on vacation? What is your favorite television program? What is your favorite food?

When we speak of “delight” what do you think of first? Do you think of the commandments of the LORD? Do you think of being obedient to the teachings of the Word of God?

Most of the time when even a believer thinks of “delight” it is not in the study of the Bible. Yet, that should be something that brings us joy each day as we learn more about our salvation and service to someone who has given us the gift of eternal life in heaven.

Yet, if we are honest there are times when these things are not what we take pleasure in. God wants us to think of our salvation as something to take pleasure in each day and come to HIM to ask for HIS blessings on our life and witness.

Too many people who say that they are believers don’t find too much delight in serving the LORD. Too many people who say that they are believers are going to a church that bores them and yet they don’t seek one that is genuine and causing them to grow.

God wants our Christian life to be one of growth and excitement as we see ourselves growing and reaching our family and others for HIM.

CHALLENGE: When you think of what cause you great joy make it your personal relationship with the LORD and your witness to others.

__________________________________________________________________

: 48      My hands also will I lift up to YOUR commandments, which I have loved, and I will meditate in YOUR statutes. (7878 “meditate” [siyach] means to speak enthusiastically, to praise, to think intently and at length, muse, or to give a loud, enthusiastic, emotionally laden speech.)

DEVOTION:  When we genuinely love something, we want to spend time doing what gives us great pleasure. There are things in everyone’s life that makes them happy. There are things that make us sad as well.

God wants us to think intently about HIM and in that process learn to love his commands and enjoy thinking intently on things that please HIM.

This is hard to do in our time period. There are so many distractions around us all the time. We usually have a cell phone in our pocket and when we are praying it will go off and we have to decide if we are going to answer it or continue to pray to the LORD. Many people who are going to church will stop the prayer and talk to someone else even if it is not an important conversation.

When we are individuals who take time each day to worship the LORD, we need to set aside time to spend with HIM and not let other things interfere with our special time with HIM.

We need to decide that everything else can wait while we spend quality time with HIM to learn what HE has to say to us each day. If we practice this our spiritual life will grow and we will be able to help others better.

Satan doesn’t want us to spend quality time with the LORD. Most days he wins in the lives of those who claim to be genuine believers. It is sad but true.

CHALLENGE: Are you spending time alone with the LORD to learn what HE wants you to do that day? Only you can answer the question. God knows your answer.

QUOTES regarding passage

46. I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed

Liberty in walking” in the Lord’s ways will naturally produce boldness in “speaking” of them. Compare the conduct of the three unshaken witnesses of the truth before the Babylonish monarch. Mark the difference of the spirit displayed by the Apostles, and especially by Peter, before and after the day of Pentecost.2 Look at Stephen before the council, and Paul before Felix,4 Festus, and Agrippa.6 “God had not given to them the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Hear the great Apostle testifying of himself—“I am ready to preach the Gospel to you that are at Rome also,”—at the metropolis of the world, in the face of all opposition and contempt, and at the imminent hazard of my life—“For,” says he, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.” In the same determination of soul, he exhorts his dear son in the faith—“Be not thou ashamed of the testimony of the Lord, nor of me his prisoner.” To how many does “the fear of man bring a snare?”10 Many a good soldier has faced the cannon’s mouth with undaunted front, and yet shrunk away with a coward’s heart from the reproach of the cross, and been put to the blush even by the mention of the Saviour’s name. Far better—the son of man “strengthening you”—to brave the fiery furnace or the den of lions in his service, than like Jonah, by flinching from the cross, incur the sting of conscience and the frown of God.

Professing Christians! Are we ready to bear our testimony for Jesus, against the sneer and ridicule of the ungodly? We are not likely to “be brought before kings and rulers for the Son of Man’s sake.” Yet no less do we need Divine help and strong faith in withstanding the enmity of a prejudiced relative or scornful neighbor. Young people! you are perhaps in especial danger of being ashamed of your Bible, your religion, your Saviour. You may be brought under the “snare” of the “fear of man,” and be tempted to compromise your religion, and to sacrifice your everlasting all from a dread of “the reproach of Christ.” But remember him, who for your sake “before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;” and shall the dread of a name restrain you from sharing his reproach, and banish the obligations of love and gratitude from your hearts? Have you forgotten, that you once owned the service of Satan? and will you not be as bold for Christ, as you were for him? Were you once “glorying in your shame;” and will you now be ashamed of your glory? Oh! remember who hath said, “Whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of Man be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”2 Think much and often of this word. Think on this day. Think on the station of “the fearful and unbelieving” on the left hand on that day. Think on their eternal doom. What is a prison to hell? What need to pray and tremble! If you are sincere in your determination, and simple in your dependence, then will the “love of Christ constrain you,”4 not to a cold, calculating, reluctant service; but to a confession of your Saviour, bold, unfettered, and “faithful even unto death.” Every deviation from the straight path bears the character of being ashamed of Christ. How much have you to speak in behalf of his testimonies, his ways, his love! When in danger of the influence of the fear of man, look to him for strength. He will give to you—as he gave to Stephen—“a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay or resist.” Thus will you, like them, be strengthened “to profess a good profession before many witnesses.” (Bridges, C. (1861). Exposition of Psalm 119: As Illustrative of the Character and Exercises of Christian Experience (Seventeenth Edition., pp. 76–77). New York: Robert Carter & Brothers.)

46. A prophet may be called “before kings,” either in the course of his office, to instruct them, or else in a judiciary way, to give an account of his faith. In either case, if he “walketh at liberty, he will speak of God’s testimonies,” with due reverence to the person and authority of his prince, but as one who is neither afraid nor “ashamed” to declare the whole counsel of heaven to any being upon earth. (Horne, G. (1856). A Commentary on the Book of Psalms (p. 437). New York: Robert Carter & Brothers.)

46. before kings] Like Daniel and his companions, or Nehemiah, or the martyrs of the Maccabaean period, he is ready, if need be, to confess his faith boldly before the highest human authorities. Cp. TESTIMONY

˓edut (עֵדוּת, 5715), “testimony; ordinance.” The 83 occurrences of this word are scattered throughout all types of biblical literature and all periods (although not before the giving of the law at Mount Sinai).

This word refers to the Ten Commandments as a solemn divine charge or duty. In particular, it represents those commandments as written on the tablets and existing as a reminder and “testimony” of Israel’s relationship and responsibility to God: “And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon Mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God” (Exod. 31:18). Elsewhere these tablets are called simply “the testimony” (Exod. 25:16). Since they were kept in the ark, it became known as the “ark of the testimony” (Exod. 25:22) or simply “the testimony”: “As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept” (Exod. 16:34—the first biblical occurrence of the word). The tabernacle as the housing for the ark containing these tablets was sometimes called the “tabernacle of testimony” (Exod. 38:21) or the “tent of the testimony” (Num. 9:15).

The word sometimes refers to the entire law of God: “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple” (Ps. 19:7). Here ˓edut is synonymously parallel to “law,” making it a synonym to that larger concept. Special or particular laws are sometimes called “testimonies”: “And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies …” (1 Kings 2:3). In Ps. 122:4 the annual pilgrimage feasts are called “the testimony of Israel.”  (Vine, W. E., Unger, M. F., & White, W., Jr. (1996). Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words (Vol. 1, p. 260). Nashville, TN: T. Nelson.)

FROM MY READING:

(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)

Deuteronomy 5

Moses reviews the Ten Commandments with the children of Israel.

INSIGHT

David writes that the Law of the Lord is perfect, and in keeping it, there is great reward. Part of that great reward is spelled out in chapter 5. Moses says that if the children of Israel will keep God’s commandments, it will go well with them and with their sons forever! In addition, the Lord promises that they will live and that they may prolong their days in the land.

Holiness is not expensive. In fact, all the deepest longings of a child of God are met only in holiness. Could we consistently believe this, our lives would be more holy. Like the Israelites, we think that we are missing something by serving God. We are missing no more than the Israelites missed of Egypt.\

THE WORK HAS BEEN DONE

It is finished.  John 19:30
We need to be delivered from the power of the devil, we need death and the grave to be conquered—and our Lord Jesus Christ has done it all. And beyond all that, we need a new nature, because we need not only forgiveness of sins, but to be made fit to have communion and fellowship with God. We need to have a nature that can stand before God, for “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all”(1 John 1:5). And Christ has come and given Himself, His own nature, the eternal life of which he speaks in John 17:1-5. So here, looking at it all, He can say, “I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do” (verse 4).
He has done everything that is necessary for man to be reconciled to God. Have you realized, my friends, that this work is finished? Have you realized that it is finished as far as you are concerned? You are asked whether you are a Christian, and you reply that you are hoping to be, but that you need to do this, that, and the other. No! Christ says, “I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” The work has been done, and what proves whether we are truly Christians or not is whether we know and realize that the work has been done and that we then rest, and rest only, upon the finished work of our blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If we see it all in Him and the work done and completed in Him, it means we are Christians.
The way for you to know God and to be reconciled to Him is wide-open in the Lord Jesus Christ and His perfect work on your behalf. If you have never entered in before, enter in now, rest upon the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and begin to rejoice, immediately, in your great salvation.
A Thought to Ponder: The way for you to know God, and to be reconciled to Him, is wide-open in the Lord Jesus Christ.

NAMES AND WORSHIP

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Matthew 28:19
Further evidence for the deity of Christ is the way in which the names of God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son are coupled together. There are several examples of this. Christ Himself said, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” Romans 1:7 speaks of “God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.” In 2 Corinthians 13:14, in the so-called apostolic benediction, we read, “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all.” First Thessalonians 3:11 says, “Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.” And, indeed, you will find it in James 1:1, “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.”
A further piece of evidence supporting the divinity of Christ is that divine worship is ascribed to Him. He accepted such worship from men and women when He was on earth. You will find that in Matthew 28:9 and in Luke 24:52. But you get it also by way of exhortation in 1 Corinthians 1:2 where Paul refers to “all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.” That is worship. In 2 Corinthians 12:8-9 Paul tells us, “For this thing I besought the Lord thrice”–that this is the Lord Jesus Christ is quite clear from the context. In Acts 7:59 we read of Stephen, as he was being stoned, “And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Indeed, our Lord Himself already prepared us for all this when He said, “That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father” (John 5:23).
A Thought to Ponder: The names of God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son are coupled together. (From God the Father, God the Son, pp. 269-270, by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

Focused Leadership
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)
Those whom God calls into spiritual leadership are required to keep their spiritual eyes on eternity because “the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).
Godly leaders must know and use the Scriptures. The Word of God is eternal (Matthew 24:35) and more powerful than any other tool God has provided for us (Hebrews 4:12). If God’s leaders are to prosper in their work, they must build a cache of the Word to keep their “way” clean (Psalm 119:9-10).
Godly leaders must absorb the Scriptures. Those who lead others may not “walk,” “stand,” or “sit” in the lifestyle of wickedness (Psalm 1:1). To the contrary, they must delight and meditate in God’s Word “day and night” (Psalm 1:2). The psalmist once said, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11).
Godly leaders focus on obedience to the Scriptures. Another psalmist sought for such leaders when he asked, “Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can shew forth all his praise? Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times” (Psalm 106:2-3). Jesus insisted His disciples seek the Kingdom first (Matthew 6:33) if they would know the blessings of worry-free living. Peter simply said, “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:15-16).

Naming Names
“Their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.” (2 Timothy 2:17-18)
Many Christians decry the citing of actual names of those Christian leaders who teach heretical doctrines, saying that such an act is “unloving.” Paul, however, considered it an important evidence of true love to warn against those who would “overthrow the faith of some,” realizing that generalities would be useless.
Not only did Hymenaeus and Philetus make Paul’s list, but so did Demas (2 Timothy 4:10), Alexander the coppersmith (2 Timothy 4:14), the Cretians (Titus 1:12), another Alexander (1 Timothy 1:20), and even Peter (Galatians 2:11-14) when he began to teach legalism. Likewise, John warned against Diotrephes (3 John 1:9) and the Nicolaitans (Revelation 2:6).
On the other hand, Paul was much more generous with name recognition when he was giving out commendations (e.g., Romans 16:1-15Colossians 4:7-17). We undoubtedly need to follow his example in appreciating by name those who are faithful in teaching and living the truth.
Likewise, we need to be ready and willing to name those individuals, churches, schools, and other organizations that are denying biblical inerrant authority, compromising the doctrine of special creation, requiring humanistic works for salvation, or bringing in other heretical doctrines. We obviously need to be sure of our facts when we do this and also to bring such charges only if motivated by genuine concern for those apt to be led astray if we don’t speak out. But then we must, indeed, “mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them”

(Romans 16:17).    (HMM, The Institute for Creation Research)

Spotting God

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Isaiah 26:3
A pirouette is a graceful spin that’s executed by ballerinas and contemporary dancers alike. As a child, I loved to do pirouettes in my modern dance class, whirling round and round until I was dizzy in the head and fell to the ground. As I got older, a trick I learned to help me maintain my balance and control was “spotting”—identifying a single point for my eyes to return to each time I made a full circle spin. Having a single focal point was all I needed to master my pirouette with a graceful finish.

We all face many twists and turns in life. When we focus on our problems, however, the things we encounter seem unmanageable, leaving us dizzy and heading toward a disastrous fall. The Bible reminds us that if we keep our minds steadfast, or focused, on God, He’ll keep us in “perfect peace” (Isaiah 26:3). Perfect peace means that no matter how many turns life takes, we can remain calm, assured that God will be with us through our problems and trials. He’s the “Rock eternal” (v. 4)—the ultimate “spot” to fix our eyes on—because His promises never change.

May we keep our eyes on Him as we go through each day, going to Him in prayer and studying His promises in the Scriptures. May we rely on God, our eternal Rock, to help us move gracefully through all of life.  By Kimya Loder. Our Daily Bread
