COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 50       “This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life.”

The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982).

Comfort – 5165 נֶחָמָה [nechamah /nekh·aw·maw/] n f. From 5162; TWOT 1344c; GK 5717; Two occurrences; AV translates as “comfort” twice. 1 comfort. James Strong, Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon (Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software, 2001).

DEVOTION:  The zayin strophe accentuates the kinds of comfort the poet has enjoyed in the midst of his suffering (vv 50, 52; cf. 54, 55a). [Word Biblical Commentary, 188.] Comfort in the midst of suffering is continually needed in our world today. As different news reports come in regarding the tragic events around our world (Nepal, Ukraine, the Middle East, Baltimore, Md., USA) the need for comfort is paramount. Whether it is death, war, disease or starvation the psalmist looked to the word of God for comfort. This same element is available today for each of us who are faced with difficulty and tragedy. In the midst of change, God’s word is unchanging! In the darkness of crisis, it speaks light through Christ’s love. In the cacophony of chaos, God’s word brings peace.

There was a song by William Gaither which states it so well; “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; There’s just something about that name; Master, Savior, Jesus; Like the fragrance after the rain

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; Let all heaven and earth proclaim; Kings and kingdoms shall all pass away. But there’s something about that name. When all else fails call upon the name the Scriptures exalts above all others! JESUS!

CHALLENGE:  Be comforted through the word of God today! (Dr. Brian Miller – board member)

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 51      The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from YOUR law. (8104 “derision” [shamar] means to scoff, to laugh at with contempt, to speak barbarously, to deride, to mock, ridicule, speak in a foreign tongue.)

DEVOTION: How many people have you met who have thought they were all it and a piece of cheese as my wife would like to say. We have all met individuals who thought that they were God’s gift to the world and in fact some of them we have met in the church who thought they were God’s gift to the church and the church could not do anything without them.

There is regular pride and there is also people who are proud of their humility. This is not a Biblical thought but a human sinful thought.

When we meet people like that it is hard to get anything across to them because they are not willing to listen to what we have to say. They think they know it all.

All we can do with those type of individuals is to pray for them that they Holy Spirit gets ahold of them and turns them around because we can’t do it on our own.

They just think that we are out to lunch when in reality they are the ones out to lunch as far as the LORD is concerned.

CHALLENGE: If you know individuals who are like that DON’T give up:  prayer for them and ask the LORD to help you to be able to get through to them.

____________________________________________________________

: 52      I remembered YOUR judgments of old, O LORD, and have comforted myself. (5162 “comforted” [nacham] means to console oneself, to alleviate sorrow or distress, give emotional strength to, or to ease oneself.)

DEVOTION:  If we take the time to study the history in the Bible of how God worked in the lives of HIS people we understand that HE never gives up on HIS own.
HE does send trials to get our attention but HE promises a way to escape if we turn to HIM in repentance and commitment.

HE wants us to remember how HE worked in the Old and New Testament and realize that HE is the same God who helps those who call on HIM for help.

We have to trust HIM and obey HIS orders which will give us answers to our prayers in HIS timing. We would like it in our timing but HE knows that we have a tendency to stray and HE wants us to understand that HE wants us to be faithful to HIM, so that, we can win others to HIM.

The point the Psalmist is making is that if we study the history of the Bible we see how God has helped those who are HIS servants in the Old and New Testaments because of their willingness to humble themselves and pray for HIS help.

Too often we think we can do it on our own and it just DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY.

CHALLENGE: History teaches us that God works with those who are willing to work with HIM. Are you working with HIM or trying to do it your way? How is your memory?

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 53      Horror has taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake YOUR law.  (2152 “Horror” [zal‘aphah] means burning heat, raging heat, feeling of righteous anger, indignation, or zeal.)

DEVOTION: What stirs you up? What gets you angry? What causes you to want to defend the LORD from those who don’t think HE is important to this world? Does it take someone saying something to you personally? Does it come when you watch something on television that dishonors the LORD?

Sometimes it takes a lot for something to stir some people up to want to defend the teachings of the Word of God. There are many people who misuse the Bible for their own benefit. They want to prove a point and point to a verse in the Bible that has nothing to do with the subject.

The right use of the Bible should be a priority for those who are genuine believers. We should know the Bible well enough to know when someone is misusing it or saying something against it.

When was the last time you were righteously angry at someone who misused the Word of God? Were you able to defend your point of view with love and understanding? Did the person understand as they went away know that they were disobeying the teachings of the Word of God? Did they understand that you did it in love?

CHALLENGE: Sometimes even genuine believers who are young in the faith don’t understand what the Bible is saying regarding actions believers need to take in relationship to others. Also, there are people who are not believers that abuse the Word of God and this should stir up genuine righteous anger!!

______________________________________________________________

: 54      Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage(4033 “pilgrimage” [magur] means                          lodging, abode, residence, dwelling, or be a stranger.

DEVOTION:  How good is our memory? I tell people I have a good memory but it is short and each year it seems to get shorter. The LORD seems to encourage HIS people to remember things. HE wants them to remember everything that has taken place in the past. HE wants them to know that HE is with them in the present. HE also wants HIS followers to know that HE is in control of the future. HE will not let an trial come our way that we cannot handle. All trials are sent for our personal growth.

Those who have followed Christ as their Savior are resident aliens. This world is not our home. We are just passing through. We are strangers in this world. This world is full of proud people who think they don’t need God. This world is full of wicked people who think they don’t have to answer to God. They are wrong!!! Our walk is different from those who are proud and wicked.

Our walk is full of learning what the LORD expects of us. One of the things that are expected is that we worship HIM. While we are here, we are to sing. Who are we to sing to? The LORD.

We are on a road that leads out of this world. We have hope because of the promises of the LORD. We are in affliction here on this earth but we are comforted by the promises of a BETTER place in eternity with God.

Are we treating this world as our permanent dwelling place? Are we looking for a BETTER place? If we are looking for a BETTER place are we acting like it? This present time period is not heaven on earth. This present time period is a time to remember all that the LORD has promised. This present time period is a time to become more Christ-like in our actions. The LORD leaves us here until we learn what HE wants us to. Some of us will be here a LONG time.

CHALLENGE: Hope is important in our daily walk with the LORD. We need to express hope. We need to share hope. We need to encourage hope.

QUOTES regarding passage

His people remember God’s Word (vv. 52–54). How could this spiritual leader know the “ancient laws” that God gave Moses centuries before? The nation had preserved the Word (Deut. 31:24–29) and taught it to each new generation (Deut. 4:1–14), and this is the obligation of the church today (2 Tim. 2:2). Unless the Word of God is honored, taught, and obeyed in a church, that congregation is one generation short of extinction. The psalmist was indignant at what the worldly people (“the arrogant”) were doing as they abandoned Israel’s spiritual heritage (vv. 53, 104, 128, 163), and he wept over their evil deeds (v. 136). Anger alone can be very destructive, but anger plus love produces anguish, and anguish can lead to constructive action. His response was to turn God’s statutes into songs and to use the Word to praise the Lord (v. 54; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). He did not consider God’s law a burden to bear; he saw the Word as a blessing to share—and he sang it! Praise that is not based on the truth of Scripture is unacceptable to the Lord. We are on a difficult pilgrimage from earth to heaven, and we need God’s songs to encourage us and to help us witness to others along the way (Acts 16:22–34). We are strangers on the earth, and the Bible is our guidebook to this world (vv. 19, 64) and to ourselves (v. 64) (Wiersbe, W. W. (2004). Be exultant (1st ed., pp. 116–117). Colorado Springs, CO: Cook Communications Ministries.)

Ver. 53. Horror hath taken hold upon me, &c.] Trembling, sorrow, and distress, to a great degree, like a storm, or a blustering, scorching, burning wind, as the word signifies, which is very terrible. Because of the wicked that forsake thy law: not only transgress the law of the Lord, as every man does, more or less; but wilfully and obstinately despise it, and cast it behind their backs, and live in a continued course of disobedience to it; or who apostatize from the doctrine of the word of God; wilfully deny the truth, after they have had a speculative knowledge of it, whose punishment is very grievous, Heb. 10:26–29 and now partly on account of the daring impiety of wicked men, who stretch out their hands against God, and strengthen themselves against the Almighty, and run upon him, even on the thick bosses of his bucklers; because of the shocking nature of their sins, the sad examples thereby set to others, the detriment they are of to themselves, and dishonour they bring to God; and partly because of the dreadful punishment that shall be inflicted on them here, and especially hereafter, when a horrible tempest of wrath will come upon them. Hence such trembling seized the psalmist; and often so it is, that good men tremble more for the wicked than they do for themselves; see ver. 120. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 4, pp. 218–219). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

___________________________________________________________

53. “Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.” He was horrified at their action, at the pride which led them to it. and at the punishment which would be sure to fall upon them for it. When he thought upon the ancient judgments of God he was filled with terror at the fate of the godless; as well he might be. Their laughter had not distressed him, but he was distressed by a foresight of their overthrow. Truths which were amusement to them caused amazement to him. He saw them utterly turning away from the law of God, and leaving it as a path forsaken and overgrown from want of traffic, and this forsaking of the law filled him with the most painful emotions: he was astonished at their wickedness, stunned by their presumption, alarmed by the expectation of their sudden overthrow, amazed by the terror of their certain doom.

See verses 106 and 158, and note the tenderness which combined with all this. Those who are the firmest believers in the eternal punishment of the wicked are the most grieved at their doom. It is no proof of tenderness to shut one’s eyes to the awful doom of the ungodly. Compassion is far better shown in trying to save sinners than in trying to make things pleasant all round. Oh that we were all more distressed as we think of the portion of the ungodly in the lake of fire! The popular plan is to shut your eyes and forget all about it, or pretend to doubt it; but this is not the way of the faithful servant of God. (Spurgeon, C. H. (n.d.). The treasury of David: Psalms 111-119 (Vol. 5, p. 241). London; Edinburgh; New York: Marshall Brothers.)

53. Horror; rather, burning zeal, or indignation. The Hebrew “properly signifies the pestilential burning wind, called by the Arabs simoom; and is here used in a figurative sense for the most horrid mental distress.”—B.C.B. See note on Psalm 11:6, where the same word occurs, and is rendered horrible tempest. (Alexander, W. H. (1867). The Book of Praises: Being the Book of Psalms, according to the Authorized Version, with Notes Original and Selected (p. 404). London: Jackson, Walford, and Hodder.)

53. Horror hath taken hold upon me, because of the wicked that forsake thy law

The remembrance of the Lord’s judgments of old, while it brings comfort to his people as regards themselves, stirs up a poignancy of compassionate reeling for the ungodly. And indeed to a feeling and reflecting mind, the condition of the world must excite commiseration and concern! A “whole world lying in wickedness!” lying therefore in ruins! the image of God effaced! the presence of God departed! “Horror hath taken hold of me!” to see the law of Him, who gave being to the world, so utterly forsaken! so much light and love shining from heaven in vain! The earthly heart cannot endure that any restraint should be imposed; much less that any constraint, even of love, should be employed to change its bias, and turn it back to its God. Are you then a believer? then you will be most tender of the honor of the law of God. Every stroke at his law you will feel as a stroke at your own heart. Are you a believer? then will you consider every man as your brother; and weep to see so many of them around you, crowding the broad road to destruction, and perishing as the miserable victims of their own deceivings. The prospect on every side is, as if God were cast down from his throne, and the creatures of his hand were murdering their own souls.

But how invariably does a languor respecting our own eternal interest affect the tenderness of our regard for the honor of our God; so that we can look at “the wicked that forsake God’s law” with comparative indifference! Awful indeed is the thought, that it ever can be with us a small matter, that multitudes are sinking! going down into perdition! with the name of Christ—under the seal of baptism—partakers of the means of Gospel grace—yet perishing! Not indeed that we are to yield to such a feeling of “horror” as would paralyze all exertion on their behalf. For do we owe them no duty—no prayer—no labor? Shall we look upon souls hurrying on with such dreadful haste to unutterable, everlasting torments; and permit them to rush on blinded, unawakened, unalarmed! If there is a “horror” to see a brand apparently fitting for the fire, will there not be a wrestling endeavor to pluck that brand out of the fire? Have we quite forgotten in our own case the fearful terrors of an unconverted state—the Almighty power of wrath and justice armed against us—the thunder of that voice—“Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord?” Oh! if the love of the Saviour and the love of souls were reigning with more mighty influence in our hearts, how much more devoted should we be in our little spheres of labor! how much more enlarged in our supplications, until all the kingdom of Satan were subject to the obedience of the Son of God, and conquered by the force of his omnipotent love!

But if the spirit of David, renewed but in part, was thus filled with horror in the contemplation of the wicked, what must have been the affliction—what the intensity of His sufferings, “who was holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners”—yea, “of purer eyes than to behold iniquity”5—during thirty-three years of continued contact with a world of sin? What shall we say of the condescension of his love, in wearing “the likeness of sinful flesh”—dwelling among sinners—yea, “receiving sinners, and eating with them!”

Blessed Spirit! impart to us more of “the mind that was in Christ Jesus!” that the law of God may be increasingly precious in our eyes, and that we may be “exceedingly jealous for the Lord God of Hosts!” Help us by thy gracious influence, to plead with sinners for God, and to plead for sinners with God! (Bridges, C. (1861). Exposition of Psalm 119: As Illustrative of the Character and Exercises of Christian Experience (Seventeenth Edition., pp. 85–87). New York: Robert Carter & Brothers.)

53. Burning indignation. See on 11 notec. Kay connects it with זעף the ל being inserted, “fainting,” “drooping,” &c. LXX. ἀθυμία, Vulg. defectio. The action of the Simûm may either be regarded as a burning, parching wind, or in its effects, as producing faintness. (Perowne, J. J. S. (1882). 53 Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.

Horror; a mixed passion made up of indignation at their persons as sinful, and abhorrency of their sins, and dread and sorrow at the consideration of the judgments of God coming upon them. Because of the wicked that forsake thy law; for the dishonour which they bring to God, the scandal and mischief to others, and their own certain ruin. (Poole, M. (1853). Annotations upon the Holy Bible (Vol. 2, p. 185). New York: Robert Carter and Brothers.)

Deuteronomy 6

Moses exhorts the Israelites to obey the greatest commandment.

INSIGHT

There are three keys to sharing your faith with someone else. First, it must be real in your life. Moses said the words must be in your “heart,” not just your “head.” Second, we must impart truth and information. That is, we must teach diligently. Finally, this truth must penetrate every corner of our lives. We must talk of it when we lie down and when we rise up.

We rarely fool anyone, and if one of these keys is missing in our lives, we will not make an impact on others. We must know the truth, it must be real to us, and it must permeate our daily lives.  (Quiet Walk)

THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE

This is your hour, and the power of darkness. Luke 22:53
What does our Lord mean exactly when He says in the Garden of Gethsemane, “This is your hour, and the power of darkness”? It seems to me that the only possible explanation must be that this hour would never have come to pass were it not for the power of darkness. What makes this hour and all that it involves necessary and essential? It is again the problem of sin and of evil, the problem of Satan and of hell. It is the kind of hour that the devil has staged and brought into being, for in one sense he has manipulated it, though in a much higher sense he has not. I think this is the way to look at it—it is the work of the devil that makes the hour essential from God’s standpoint; it is because of what Satan has produced by sin and evil that God has to do this in order to overcome it.
So it is, in a sense, the hour of evil men, and it is there that we really see the essence of evil and of sin. The devil has produced such a situation that this hour alone can deal with it.
So this hour can be described as “your hour” and the hour of the glorification of the Son at the same time, and that is why He prays that His Father may glorify Him. It is in going through this hour, which has been produced by Satan and hell, that our Lord really is glorified. It is there we know for certain that He is the Son of God. No one had ever before had to meet Satan and conquer him; no one had been able to destroy the power that Satan had over death. The author to the Epistle to the Hebrews puts it like this: “That through death he might destroy him that had the power of death”(2:14). And thus He sets the children free, and Christ has done this through His glorification. Christ’s death and resurrection are proof that He is the Son of God.
A Thought to Ponder
Christ’s death and resurrection are proof that He is the Son of God.

Leaning into God

Pray continually. 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Harriet Tubman couldn’t read or write. As an adolescent, she suffered a head injury at the hands of a cruel slave master. That injury caused her to have seizures and lapses of consciousness for the rest of her life. But once she escaped slavery, God used her to rescue as many as three hundred others.

Nicknamed “Moses” by those she freed, Harriet bravely made nineteen trips back to the pre-Civil War South to rescue others. She continued even when there was a price on her head and her life was in constant danger. A devoted believer in Jesus, she carried a hymnal and a Bible on every trip and had others read her verses, which she committed to memory and quoted often. “I prayed all the time,” she said, “about my work, everywhere; I was always talking to the Lord.” She also gave God credit for the smallest successes. Her life was a powerful expression of the apostle Paul’s instruction to the earliest Christians: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18).

When we lean into God in the moment and live dependently in prayer, praising Him despite our difficulties, He gives us the strength to accomplish even the most challenging tasks. Our Savior is greater than anything we face, and He will lead us as we look to Him.

No matter how genuine one’s Christianity may be, he is never beyond the possibility of failure or backsliding while in this world, but no real believer will ever become an apostate, for that involves a definite turning away from the truth of Christ and His redemptive work. The Spirit of God will reclaim the backslider, but there is no such promise for the recovery of the apostate. (H.A. Ironside, The Continual Burnt Offering)

After Paul’s travels, he preaches in Jerusalem and is arrested for violating the Law.
INSIGHT When Paul preaches, either a riot or a revival usually occurs. When he goes to Jerusalem for the last time, a riot breaks out. Having been told beforehand by the Holy Spirit, Paul is aware that he will be imprisoned and handed over to the Gentiles. Even though his friends beg him to avoid Jerusalem, Paul “would not be persuaded”; and his friends give up and say, “The will of the Lord be done” (v. 14). Paul views himself as a sojourner on this earth, for his true citizenship is in heaven. He is to be simply a steward, an ambassador of Christ while his time lasts. What power and vision that outlook gives Paul to avoid the entanglements of this world! How much more completely would we realize our calling if we saw ourselves in the same way.(Quiet Walk)

A Response to Threat
“He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor the arrow that flieth by day.” (Psalm 91:4-5)
Today we remember the unprovoked attack on America by Muslim terrorists. Despite attempts to make the country more secure, the threat remains scarcely abated. What should the Christian’s response be? In our text above, we see we have no cause for fear. The physical danger may be real, but our Lord promises protection in tender words likened to a mother bird’s care for her young. Our ultimate deliverance is guaranteed by His sure promises. Trust in His power and truth sustains us as surely as a shield and buckler.
Our hope cannot rest in military might. God does not promise temporal safety to all, for millions have succumbed to undeserved violence. Our last hope is of a different order, firmly grounded in “the LORD, which is my refuge” (v. 9). He responds to our trust and worship with the promise “with long [better translated as ‘eternal’] life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation” (v. 16). Much more interested in our response to troubles than in our deliverance, He desires us to believe and serve Him, trusting Him even in perilous times.
A New Testament application of this principle is in 1 Peter 3:14: “If ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled.” The remedy? “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).
Jesus Christ is our example and inspiration. “For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds” (Hebrews 12:3). Fixing our eyes upon Him, we have no cause for fear. (
