and wither as the green herb

and verily you shall be fed
Delight yourself also in the LORD
and HE shall give you the desires of your heart

Rest in the LORD – and wait patiently for HIM
fret not yourself because of him who prospers in his way
BECAUSE of the man who
brings wicked devices to pass

BUT those that WAIT on the LORD
they shall inherit the earth
Meek will inherit the earth verse 10- 11

you shall diligently consider his place – and it shall not be
BUT the MEEK shall inherit the earth

The wicked plot against the just – and gnash on him with his teeth

for HE sees that his day is coming
Wicked try to kill the righteous verse 14- 15

Possessions are unimportant verse 16- 17
A little that a righteous man has is BETTER THAN

and their inheritance shall be forever
they shall not be ashamed in the evil time

and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs
they shall consume
into the smoke shall they consume away

for such as be blessed of HIM shall inherit the earth
and they that be cursed of HIM shall be cut off
Steps of a good man are ordered verse 23- 24
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD
and HE delights in his way – though he fall
he shall not be utterly cast down
FOR the LORD upholds him with HIS hand
Godly have blessed children verse 25- 26
I have been young – and now am old
yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken
nor his seed begging bread
he is ever merciful – and lends
his seed is blessed
Godly are never forsaken verse 27- 29
Depart from evil – and do good – and dwell forevermore
for the LORD loves judgment – and forsakes not HIS saints
they are preserved forever
BUT the seed of the wicked shall be cut off
The righteous shall inherit the land – and dwell therein for ever
Godly train others verse 30- 31
The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom
his tongue talks of judgment
the law of his God is in his heart
none of his steps shall slide
Wicked will not succeed verse 32- 33
The wicked watches the righteous – and seeks to slay him
the LORD will not leave him in his hand
nor condemn him when he is judged
Wait on the LORD verse 34
Wait on the LORD – and keep HIS way
and HE shall exalt you to inherit the land
when the wicked are cut off – you shall see it
Wicked are forgotten verse 35- 36
I have seen the wicked in great power
and spreading himself like a green bay tree
yet he passed away – and lo – he was not
yea – I sought him – but he could not be found
Mark a perfect man verse 37- 38
Mark the perfect man – and behold the upright
FOR the end of that man is peace
BUT the transgressors shall be destroyed together
the end of the wicked shall be cut off
Righteous are helped by the LORD verse 39- 40
BUT the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD
HE is their strength in the time of trouble
and the LORD shall help them – and deliver them
HE shall deliver them from the wicked – and save them
BECAUSE they TRUST in HIM
COMMENTARY:
DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers
: 1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers, neither be you envious against the workers of iniquity. (2734 “fret” [charah] means to get excited, to kindle, to be or become hot, angry, to burn, enraged, or to be agitated or irritated.)
DEVOTION: Does it seem to irritate you that there are people who seem to get away with working against God and seem to be able to get away with it? There seems to be a large group of these people around when we are trying to do good for the LORD.
David was instructing those he knows and us that we don’t have to worry about those people because the LORD is going to handle them. However, it seems to us that HE is very longsuffering with them and it seems that with us HE gives us a hard time when we sin.
Our lives seem to be full of individuals who like to sin and get away with it. We try to serve the LORD to the best of our ability but we it seems that we fail more times than we succeed.
There are sometimes in my life when I look at those who seem to get away with disobeying God and still have a smile on their face. They seem to be happy and carefree. They even look down on those who are trying to serve the LORD.
God wants us to realize that our life on this earth is really short and we need to concentrate on our relationship with the LORD, no matter what, is going on around us. We have to stop looking at other peoples lives and concentrate on what we are supposed to do and watch the LORD work. HE has put me in situations I didn’t like but HE has used me in those situations to honor HIM and see others establish a relationship with HIM in spite of their present circumstances. I will meet those people in heaven one day and we will be able to celebrate together our relationship with the LORD and each other.
CHALLENGE: We need to praise the LORD for those situations.
DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers
: 4 Delight yourself also in the LORD, and HE shall give you the desires of YOUR heart. (6027 “Delight” [‘oneg] means to take one’s pleasure in, to make fun about, to take a high degree of pleasure or mental satisfaction in, to live softly and delicately, or pleasantness.)
DEVOTION: Our best times are ones in which we genuinely trust the LORD to give us the desires of our heart. What does your heart desire? What do I desire?
My first desire is that all of my children and grandchildren will be genuine followers of the LORD. Each of them need to make a commitment to the LORD that is pleasing to the LORD. That is my prayer for all of my family and friends.
I try to be the witness that I am suppose to be and there are times that I fail but the LORD forgives me and so does my family.
However, those times need to be few and far between. My prayer life has to be one that remembers those I love in prayer on a daily basis. HE wants to hear from me each day with genuine concern over those I love. HE wants me to make sure that I share my desires with those that I am praying for on a regular basis.
Our witness is important to the answering of our prayers. If we really enjoy praying for our loved ones who need to follow the LORD, the LORD knows it. It is commanded here in the life of David and it is commanded for us to listen to his teachings.
What is your prayer life like for those you love? Do we delight or take pleasure in our prayers for those we love? Do we tell those we love that we are praying for them and that we want the LORD’S best for their life?
If this is not a habit that we presently practicing we need to start with our family and continue on to our friends and then on to those we know that are not presently following the LORD. Our example is important.
CHALLENGE: Is one of the things we take pleasure in each day our prayer life? Does HE know that we find these times in HIS presence a thing of pleasure? Do we text our friends about what we are doing on their behalf?

:16 “A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked.” (“Little,” 4592 מְעַט [mâʿat], 1 littleness, few, a little, fewness. 1a little, small, littleness, fewness, too little, yet a little. 1b like a little within a little, almost, just, hardly, shortly, little worth. [Strong, J. (2001). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software.])
DEVOTION: Once again, the fate of the righteous is contrasted with that of the wicked in this psalm. The wicked accumulate great riches, while the righteous man has a little. This verse states that the little that the righteous man owns is better than the riches of the wicked. The purpose of this comparison is to get us to see things from God’s perspective.
First, in this day when we think that “bigger is better,” it is helpful to note that this psalm points out that God often blesses the righteous with little. We have to rely on God more when we only have a little, rather than trust in our own resources. Jesus promised that those who put their trust in earthly possessions do not truly serve Him (Matthew 6:24). Rather, we are to seek first His kingdom and righteousness above our own comfort (Matthew 6:33). Needing God is a blessing.
Second, we sometimes do not think about earthly possessions from an eternal perspective. We cannot take our stuff with us when we die. Yet we still think that the accumulation of stuff can make us happy. But God makes it clear that His blessing is far greater than what we own. Contrary to what those who preach the “prosperity gospel” teach, God does not intend to give all His children a lot of money and possessions in this life.
Lastly, we are to thank God for whatever He gives us, because He is the one who provides for all His creation in the way that He knows best. Wanting more from Him can be an act of ingratitude before Him, if we are comparing ourselves and our situation with others.
CHALLENGE: Are you struggling with covetousness? What one thing more do you think will make you happy? Instead, hold what God has given you with an open hand, offering it all back to Him, and thank Him for the great gift of grace He has given you. Seek someone to be generous to today. (Dr. Marc Wooten – board member)
DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers
:23 “The steps of a good man is ordered by the Lord, and he delights in his way.” NKJV. ( to prepare, make ready; to erect, set up; to determine, fix, appoint; to make firm; to feel inclined, be intent on, be firmly resolved)
DEVOTION: Why should the believer be concerned about his future? For many of us it is a consuming issue that constantly affect our daily lives. We question and query the Lord about the near and future issue that is on our heart or mind. As the psalmist was struggling with the way that the unrighteousness seemed to prosper and the righteous was persecuted he raised the question to the Lord. This conflict caused David to write this psalm. The idea that seems to return to David is that the Lord is in control of the righteous man’s life and that man can trust him in all his ways. The lord has established, fixed appointed the life of the righteous so that he will be supplied inspire of his difficulties.
CHALLENGE Believer, in spite of your currents circumstances recognize that the Lord is ordering your steps and directing you in the way you are to go! Whether you are young or old the righteous is secure in the Lord’s care. (Dr. Brian Miller – board member)
______________________________________________________________
: 37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. (8535 “perfect” [tam] means complete, blameless, upright, morally innocent, sound, wholesome or having integrity.)
DEVOTION: The life of a believer is so different from the rest of the world. We are not to worry. We are to trust the LORD to work in HIS timing not ours. We are to delight ourselves in the LORD. We are to rest in the LORD. We are to be humble. We sometime are going to have little to live on. We are to be givers not takers like the unbeliever. We are to go to the LORD for guidance regularly. We are to be at peace in a world in turmoil. Does this sound easy? It is a hard path to follow. It takes inner strength that comes from the LORD.
The LORD wants us to have integrity. HE wants us to be honest with HIM. HE wants us to keep short accounts with HIM regarding our sin and confession. HE wants us to be sound in our faith and practice. HE knows that we are growing and therefore not sinless.
David was such a man. He wrote this psalm to contrast the end result of those who are believers and those who are wicked. The wicked are going to be cut off from the land. Those that are righteous will inherit the land. The LORD orders the steps of the righteous. Whenever the righteous fall, HE is there to lift them up.
It is such a great promise to know that the LORD will lift up the righteous with HIS hand. He will not be sinless but he was sound in his relationship with the LORD. He had to be reminded at times to confess his sins but he tried to keep short accounts with God and depend on HIM for his every move.
Are we taking care to pray for those who are sound in the faith? Are we giving the ones who are serving the LORD peace in their daily life? We are here to encourage the saints. The LORD wants us to encourage one another.
The world wants to tear down the righteous. We don’t have to. We are to mark those who serve with our prayers. Have we prayed for those who are fighting the enemy? Who are we looking at? Are we encouraging them in the LORD or discouraging them?
CHALLENGE: Be an encourager. David wants us to acknowledge the difference between the righteous and the wicked. We are to be the ones who act differently toward each other and toward the world.

QUOTES regarding passage
27–34. The injunction to do good (27; cf. 3) is not as superfluous as it may sound. In the first place, a conflict with evil too often tempts one to fight the enemy with his own weapons. In the second, both the Lord and the structure of life are on the side of justice (28, 30f.), for there is nothing capricious about his support (33), or facile about our stability (31). (Kidner, D. (1973). Psalms 1–72: an introduction and commentary (Vol. 15, p. 170). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.)

37:32–38. The psalmist concluded his meditation by describing the struggle between the wicked and the righteous. His solution to the problem of wicked people was to contrast their evil plot to destroy the righteous with God’s power to preserve. The wicked lie in wait to destroy, but the Lord will not forsake His own (vv. 32–33). One who waits on the Lord will enjoy security (v. 34; cf. vv. 9, 11, 22) and the upright … man of peace will have a future (or, perhaps better, will see his “posterity”; cf. niv marg.). By contrast the wicked will flourish (v. 35; cf.v. 7b) but they will be cut off (vv. 36, 38; cf. v. 34). (Ross, A. P. (1985). Psalms. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 822). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Three images illustrate God’s judgment of those who reject Him and rebel against His law: the court trial (vv. 32–34), the tree (vv. 35–36), and the rescue (vv. 37–40). The wicked watched the godly and tried to find some reason for accusing them. In spite of David’s integrity and Solomon’s great wisdom, the judicial system in Israel was far from efficient, and it was easy for the rich to oppress the poor and take what little they possessed (Amos 2:4–8; 4:1–3). But the Lord is the highest judge, and He knows how to deliver the righteous from lying witnesses and judges who have been bribed.
The godly are pictured by the fruitful tree (1:3) and the ungodly by a luxurious (“overbearing and towering”) shrub or tree, planted in its native soil where its roots can go down deep (vv. 35–36). Not only did the tree die and fall, but there was no evidence left behind that there had ever been a tree there at all! So God will do to the wicked, who appear to be successful and permanent but are destined for judgment. God not only judges the wicked but He also rescues the righteous from their clutches (vv. 37–40). The key question isn’t what people look like or what they possess, but what is their final end? (See Prov. 5:4; 14:12–13; 16:25; 24:20). “There is a future for the man of peace … but the future of the wicked will be cut off” (vv. 37–38, niv). Some see this as referring to posterity, and that may be included, but certainly it describes the final destiny of the righteous and the wicked. The Lord delivers the righteous from eternal judgment, but He also delivers them from the attacks and accusations of the wicked in this world today. Why? “Because they trust in him” (v. 40). Fretting and fear cannot stand before faith in the living God. (Wiersbe, W. W. (2004). Be worshipful (1st ed., pp. 145–146). Colorado Springs, CO: Cook Communications Ministries.)

Ver. 34. Wait on the Lord, &c.] In the way of his appointments and ordinances; where may be learned the design of his providences, and of the prosperity of the wicked, and their end, Psal. 73:16–18 and in a providential way, for the performance of his promises, in which he never fails; and patiently bear whatever he is pleased to lay upon them; waiting for a deliverance out of every affliction, which will be in his own time. The Chaldee paraphrase is, “trust in the word of the Lord.” And keep his way: which he has pointed out in his word, and has directed his people to walk in; though tempted by Satan to turn aside to the right hand or the left; though wicked men reproach, persecute, and seek to pervert it; and though a narrow and rough way, yet keep constantly in it, in which there are both pleasure and profit; good comes of it, and in it peace is had, and the presence of God enjoyed. And he shall exalt thee to inherit the land that is, shall raise out of a low and uncomfortable situation of life to a more comfortable one; or however, hereafter, to dwell in the new heavens and new earth, to reign with Christ upon his throne, and to enjoy the eternal inheritance. When the wicked are cut off; as in ver. 9, 22, 28. Thou shalt see it; with joy and pleasure; not as exulting in the destruction of the wicked, simply considered; but as the glory of divine justice is displayed therein; see Psal. 52:5, 6. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 3, p. 685). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

34. “Wait on the Lord.” We have here the eighth precept, and it is a lofty eminence to attain to. Tarry the Lord’s leisure. Wait in obedience as a servant, in hope as an heir, in expectation as a believer. This little word “wait” is easy to say, but hard to carry out, yet faith must do it. “And keep his way.” Continue in the narrow path; let no haste for riches or ease cause unholy action. Let your motto be, “On, on, on,” Never fiag, or dream of turning aside. “He that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.” “And he shall exalt thee to inherit the land.” Thou shalt have all of earthly good which is really good, and of heavenly good there shall be no stint. Exaltation shall be the lot of the excellent. “When the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.” A sight how terrible and how instructive! What a rebuke for fretfulness! what an incentive to gratitude! My soul, be still, as thou foreseest the end, the awful end of the Lord’s enemies.
35. A second time David turns to his diary, and this time in poetic imagery tells us of what he had observed. It were well if we too took notes of divine providences. “I have seen the wicked in great power.” The man was terrible to others, ruling with much authority, and carrying things with a high hand, a Cæsar in might, a Crœsus in wealth. “And spreading himself like a green bay tree.” Adding house to house and field to field, rising higher and higher in the state. He seemed to be ever verdant like a laurel, he grew as a tree in its own native soil, from which it had never been transplanted. No particular tree is here meant, a spreading beech or a wide expanding oak may serve us to realise the picture; it is a thing of earth, whose roots are in the clay; its honours are fading leaves; and though its shadow dwarfs the plants which are condemned to pine beneath it, yet it is itself a dying thing, as the feller’s axe shall prove. In the noble tree, which claims to be king of the forest, behold the grandeur of the ungodly to-day; wait awhile and wonder at the change, as the timber is carried away, and the very root torn from the ground. (Spurgeon, C. H. (n.d.). The treasury of David: Psalms 27-57 (Vol. 2, pp. 178–179). London; Edinburgh; New York: Marshall Brothers.)

God wants to deliver us from the easygoing, smooth and silky, fat and comfortable Christianity so fashionable today. I hope we are willing to let the truth get hold of us, even at the cost of rejection or embarrassment. The faith of the heavenly overcomers cost them everything and gained them everything. What of our faith? (A. W. Tozer, Jesus Is Victor! p.116-117).

The Proof of Obedience
“And hereby do we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.” (1 John 2:3)
Jesus once said, “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46). Poignant question. A familiar complaint of those who despise Christian teaching is that “Christians” don’t act like Christians! It is a sad commentary on the condition of the Lord’s family when the ungodly are more aware of the expected behavior of God’s people than the Christians are.
Of course, the issue is not unique to the New Testament times. Israel’s historical saga is replete with seasons of rebellion and repentance—so much so that the psalmist prayed: “That the generation to come . . . . might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God” (Psalm 78:6-8).
The emphasis by John in his first epistle, however, is not on the reasons for willful disobedience, but on the results of willing obedience.
Walking in the “light” ensures fellowship (1 John 1:7).
Constant and willing obedience produces an effective prayer life (1 John 3:22).
A lifestyle of obedience brings an awareness of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling (1 John 3:24).
Loving God produces obedience, which in turn brings joy in that obedience (1 John 5:3).
Our deeds show whom we serve (1 John 3:7). Our righteous deeds provewhom we serve (Matthew 7:16-20). (HMM III, The Institute for Creation Research)
