(4641 “hardness of heart” [sklerokardia] means stubbornness, coldness, completely unyielding, unwillingness to understand, obstinacy, or obduracy.) DEVOTION:  The children of Israel were stubborn. The children of Israel were cold in their relationship to each other. The topic under discussion is putting away of a spouse or divorce. Jesus tells the Pharisees that the only reason they had a writing of divorcement was their stubbornness. They were completely unyielding to the truth that marriage should be for a lifetime.
