Joshua 13
More land to conquerverses 1-6
Now Joshua was old and stricken in years
and the LORD said to him
You are old and stricken in years
and there remain yet very much land to be possessed
This is the land that yet remains
all the borders of the Philistines – all Geshuri
from Sihor – which is before Egypt
even to the borders of Ekron northward
which is counted to the Canaanite
five lords of the Philistines – Gazathites
Ashdothites – Eshkalonites – Gittites
Ekronites – also the Avites
from the south – all the land of the Canaanites
and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians – to Aphek
to the borders of the Amorites
and the land of the Giblites – and all Lebanon
toward the sunrising
from Baal-gad under mount Hermon unto the
entering into Hamath
All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to
Misrephoth-maim – and all Sidonians
them will I drive out from before the children of Israel
only divide you it by lot unto the Israelites
for an inheritance as I have commanded you
Joshua reminded of inheritance of two & half tribesverses 7-13
Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance
to the nine tribes and the half tribe of Manasseh
with whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received
their inheritance – which Moses gave them
beyond Jordan eastward
even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them
From Aroer – that is on the bank of the river Arnon
and the city that is in the midst of the river
and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon
And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites
which reigned in Heshbon
to the border of the children of Ammon
And Gilead – and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites
and all mount Hermon – and all Bashan unto Salcah
all the kingdom of Og in Bashan
which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei
who remained of the remnant of the giants
for these did Moses smite
and cast them out
Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites
nor the Maachathites – but the Geshurites and the Maachathites
dwell among the Israelites until this day
No inheritance for the tribe of Leviverse 14
Only to the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance
the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are
their inheritance – as HE said to them
Inheritance of the tribe of Reubenverses 15-23
And Moses gave to the tribe of the children of Reuben inheritance
according to their families
And their coast was from Aaroer – that is on the bank of the river Arnon
and the city that is in the midst of the river
and all the plain by Medeba
Heshbon and all her cities that are in the plain – Dibon – Bamoth-baal
Beth-baal-meon – Jahaza – Kedemoth – Mephaaath
Kirjathaim – Sibmah – Zareth-shahar
in the mount of the valley
And Beth-peor – Ashdoth-pisgah – Beth-jeshimoth
and all the cities of the plain
and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites
which reigned in Heshbon
whom Moses smote with the princes of
Midian – Evi – Rekem – Zur – Hur
Reba – which were dukes of Sihon
dwelling in the country
Balaam also the son of Beor – the soothsayer
did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that
were slain by them
And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan – and the border thereof
This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families
and the cities and the villages thereof
Inheritance of the tribe of Gadverses 24-28
And Moses gave inheritance to the tribe of Gad
even unto the children of Gad according to their families
And their coast was Jazer – and all the cities of Gilead
and half the land of the children of Ammon
unto Aroer that is before Rabbah
and from Heshbon unto Ramath-mizpeh – and Betonim
and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir
and in the valley – Beth-aram – Beth-nimrah – Succoth
Zaphon – the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon
Jordan and his border – even unto the edge of the sea of
Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward
This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families
the cities – and their villages
Inheritance of half tribe of Manassehverses 29-31
And Moses gave inheritance to the half tribe of Manasseh
and this was the possession of the
half tribe of the children of Manasseh
by their families
And their coast was from Mahanaim – all Bashan
all the kingdom of Og – king of Bashan – all the towns of Jair
which are in Bashan – threescore cities
and the half Gilead – Ashtaroth – Edrei
cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan
were pertaining unto the children of Machir
the son of Manasseh – even to the
one half of the children of Machir
by their families
Inheritances given by Mosesverse 32
These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in
the plains of Moab – on the other side Jordan – by Jericho
eastward
No inheritance given to Leviverse 33
BUT unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance
the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance
as HE said to them
COMMENTARY:
DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers
: 1 Now Joshua was old and stricken in years, and the LORD said to him, You, are old and stricken in hears, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed. (3117 “stricken in years” [yowm] means day, daylight, how long something has existed or how long someone has lived understood in terms of days, the day of anyone, lifetime, daylight, conronicles, or a unit of time reckoned from sunset to the next sunset)
DEVOTION: Joshua had a full life. He had accomplished much in his life as a servant of Moses and the leader of the children of Israel in the conquest of the Promised Land.
Now his life was at an end and it was time for him to go to be with the LORD. Here we have the LORD saying that he had lived a full life. He had been a good servant and had been obedient to the LORD.
The LORD was explaining to him that there was more to be done. There always is more to be done but Joshua had done his share. He had done well. He had accomplice much for the LORD.
There were more territories to be conquered by the children of Israel and they were listed as follows in the chapter.
We have a responsibility to serve the LORD faithfully during our lifetime and the LORD will bless us for our service in our life to come. We are not to be slack regarding our service to the LORD. We are to be faithful to the end.
It is not easy to be faithful if we are not regularly in the Word of God. We need to be individuals who pray daily for wisdom from the LORD. We need to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Too often we are not as faithful as we should be and then we need to pray for wisdom to get our life on track. The LORD will honor our request from the heart.
Are we serving the LORD where HE wants us to serve? Are we living the life HE wants us to live? Is HE going to say to us “Well done, you good and faithful servant” when we come to the end of our life!
CHALLENGE: We need to look for those words from the LORD. This can only happen as we daily seek HIS wisdom. Are you seeking HIS wisdom today?
DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers
: 13 Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day. (3423 “expelled” [yarash] means possess, inherit, heir, enjoy, impoverish, or occupy)
DEVOTION: The LORD had commanded the people to occupy all of the Promised Land. They were not to allow anyone presently in the country to life. Their iniquity was full from the eyes of the LORD.
We already read that they made a covenant with the Gibeonites because they were deceived. They didn’t consult the LORD regarding them because they looked at their possessions and thought they were telling the truth.
Now we read that many of the occupants of the Promised Land were allowed to live with the children of Israel. This was not what the LORD commanded. It was a compromise.
God doesn’t want HIS people to compromise when HE gives them a direct command because HE knows that if they compromise a little they will compromise even more later in their history.
When we know a direct command of the LORD we need to obey it if we want the blessings of the LORD in our life. HE wants us to be obedient. HE knows that we will fail at times but that can be corrected by confession of the sin and restoration of fellowship. The LORD knows when our confession is genuine and when our confession is fake. HE knows our hearts.
CHALLENGE: We need to enjoy our inheritance the LORD has given us. HE wants us to have all of it.
: 14 Only to the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance: the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said to them. (801 “sacrifices” [‘ishshah] means offerings, offerings made with fire, burnt- offerings, or a general term for a sacrifice made by fire that encompasses other kinds of sacrifices, though it could sometimes refer to an offering made by fire as a more specific kind of sacrifice)
DEVOTION: The LORD promised the children of Levi an allotment of land but not an inheritance. They were not to conquer any territory. They were to live in the cities assigned them by the LORD.
Their allotment included the offerings made on the altar of the LORD. When the people brought their regular offerings to the place of worship the Levites would have enough to live on. That was their payment for serving the LORD.
The LORD wanted them to concentrate on the spiritual life of the children of Israel. They were to be in the forty eight cities HE gave them to live as well as in the place HE choose for HIS Tabernacle to be located. This was before they built the Temple in Jerusalem.
When the LORD’S people bring their proper offerings to the LORD’S house HIS servants from the tribe of Levi were satisfied. If the offerings didn’t come in then the Levites had to look other places for their livelihood. This was not pleasing to the LORD.
Our responsibility is to give the LORD our first tenth. If we provide our offering to the LORD HE will bless us. HE will also help our pastors and missionaries to have enough that they will not have to always asking for money. There would be an overabundance of money.
The problem we have today is that most people are giving only two percent of their income to the LORD through the local church or missionary agencies. This causes a shortage of money, so that, the local church is hurt and the mission field is hurt.
Remember God wants us to start giving when we are young. Don’t forget to take a dime from every dollar and give it to the LORD. HE will bless those who give with the right attitude.
CHALLENGE: Blessing to those who give with an obedient and willing heart.
DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers
: 22 Balaam also, the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them who were slain by them. (7080 “soothsayer” [qacam] means to distribute, determine, divine, prudent, prohibited or use divination)
DEVOTION: The LORD is restating to Joshua the inheritances of the two and a half tribes on the other side of the Jordan River. The promise to the tribe of Levi is restated as well.
Joshua was to start dividing the rest of the Promised Land to the other nine and a half tribes.
While God is describing the inheritances of the two and a half tribes, HE mentions the name of Balaam. Remember that he was the one that Balak called to put a curse on the children of Israel. At first, he would not come but finally he did come with a warning from the LORD. Each time he went out to curse the children of Israel, he blessed them instead.
Balak was mad and told him that he was not going to get any money from him. Balaam wanted the money. Balaam told Balak how to deceive the children of Israel. They were to worship false gods and live lives not pleasing to God with them. They were to entertain them. Israel was led astray by the actions of Balaam. When the children of Israel found him again, they slew him with nation of Moab.
The word found in this verse is used of individuals who used divination in their office of prophet. This individual, uses divination to determine what is going to happen in the present and future. This person could set two ways to go before him and then uses magic to determine what he should do or others should do. Balaam compromised for money. Balaam told the Moabites how to compromise the children of Israel. They attended a religious feast and took wives of the children of Moab.
There are false teachers today who will try to lead the church into compromise. Remember that God’s word is the final authority, not society or false teachers in the church. We need to be Biblically correct and not politically correct. We are to be the voice of God crying in the wilderness of our society. Many people are dying because of their testimony for Christ. We need to be part of that group if necessary.
When the Bible says it is sin, IT IS SIN! God sometimes does not judge people in this life but HE does judge for eternity. False teachers will be judged. Our guidebook is the Word of God.
When society tells us that something is not a sin and the Bible tells us that it is a sin – we need to listen to the Bible. We need to preach it in love but with conviction. Paul confronted the people of Athens with the fact that they were worshiping a false god. The unknown God to them was the God of the Bible. Today the unknown God in our society is the God of the Bible.
CHALLENGE: Even people who use the Bible to describe their church are falling into false teachings. Interpretation of the Word of God has to be rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
: 33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as HE said to them. (5159 “inheritance” [nachalah] means heritage, inalienable, hereditary property, possession, domain, portion, share, or any piece of property that passes by law to an heir on the death of the owner)
DEVOTION: Those who are servants of the LORD should not be looking to get wealthy from the offerings of the people. God gives special blessings to HIS servants who are faithful in their ministries.
There are those who are in the ministry for wealth. They want to have the offerings come to them for their own personal wealth and are not giving the LORD HIS due.
If we remember as leaders that we will receive a special crown from the LORD for faithful service then we will serve HIM with a joyful heart. This is what the Levites were to do and this is what those who serve the LORD in the local churches or on the mission field should do as well.
So no earthly inheritance didn’t mean that the Levites would starve or get wealthy, it meant they would receive a greater blessing from the LORD for their faithful service. Are you looking just for wealth here on this earth or when we are given our crowns and rewards in heaven? Leaders need to be storing up their treasures in heaven. They need to set the example for the rest of God’s children.
CHALLENGE: Those who serve the LORD full-time have a special inheritance from the LORD. All those who serve the LORD need to remain faithful to the end.

QUOTES regarding passage
6–7 The Lord reaffirmed his promise to drive out the inhabitants of the land (cf. 3:10). From this point on, however, further conquests would be the concern of the individual tribes. Moreover, the promise was conditional and was never completely fulfilled due to the incompleteness of Israel’s obedience (cf. v.13). For “Misrephoth Maim” see 11:8. Israel had pursued her enemies into this territory and had defeated them. Evidently, they did not fight with the natives of this area. Joshua was to divide all the land promised to Israel whether or not Israel possessed all of it at this time. The word translated “allocate” is the Hebrew word happilehā (“he caused it to fall”) and refers to the casting of lots. The use of lots placed everything in the hands of God and freed Joshua and the elders from any possible charge of favoritism (cf. comment on 7:14). The concept of “inheritance” was very important in Israelite society. One’s inheritance was a piece of real estate that was the inalienable possession of his family. A large portion of OT legislation is dedicated to regulating and protecting the rights of inheritance (cf. 17:3–6). (Madvig, D. H. (1992). Joshua. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel (Vol. 3, p. 317). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.)
The second half of this book begins by saying that Joshua was old. We do not know exactly how old he was, but he was probably Caleb’s senior. And at any rate, when he dies, at the end of the book, Joshua is 110. Most commentators believe that he was probably nearly ninety at this point. The problem at this time was that although the great fortresses of the land (with a few exceptions, like Jerusalem) had been overthrown, there were still hundreds of smaller towns or Canaanite enclaves still to be taken. What was to be done about these? The plan the Lord gave Joshua, and which he executed, was to divide the land among the Jewish tribes and then send each to settle its own portion by subduing the Canaanites still in it. (Boice, J. M. (2005). Joshua (p. 94). Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books.)
The 2–½ tribes east of the Jordan (Josh. 13:1–33). Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh had agreed to help the other tribes conquer the land before they returned to the east side of the Jordan to enjoy their inheritance (Num. 32). They had asked for this land outside the boundaries of Canaan because it was especially suited to the raising of cattle. The fact that these two and a half tribes would not be living within God’s appointed land didn’t seem to worry them. Moses graciously agreed to their choice and let them settle across the Jordan. When we study the twenty-second chapter of Joshua, we’ll learn that while their choice may have been good for their cattle, it created serious problems for their children.
These tribes became a sort of “buffer zone” between the Jews in Canaan and the heathen nations like Moab and Ammon. Of course, their location made them extremely vulnerable both to military attack and ungodly influence; and both of these liabilities eventually brought about their downfall (1 Chron. 5:25–26).The boundaries are given for Reuben in the south (Josh. 13:15–23), and the half tribe of Manasseh in the north (vv. 29–32), with Gad sandwiched between (vv. 24–28). (Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). Be Strong (p. 123). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)
Ver. 6. All the inhabitants of the hill-country, &c.] Not in Judea, but in and about Lebanon, as follows: from Lebanon unto Misrephoth-maim; of which see ch. 11:8 and all the Sidonians; the inhabitants of the ancient city of Sidon, and the villages and lands belonging to it: these remained unconquered, and never were possessed by the Israelites: them will I drive out from before the children of Israel; which, though it may have a special respect unto the Sidonians, with whom the clause is closely connected, yet may include all the above lands unconquered, out of which, as well as Sidon, the Lord promises to drive the inhabitants, to make way for the children of Israel; that is, on condition of their obedience, for it appears that not only the Sidonians, but many others, even the chief, and most of those mentioned, were never possessed by them: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance; that is, the whole land, as Abarbinel rightly remarks, both what was subdued and what was not; that was the business, and all the business, Joshua had now to do; he was not so be employed in making any further conquests, but leave them to others, and apply himself to the division of the land, by lot, to the tribes that as yet had no portion assigned them: as I have commanded thee; now, at this time. FROM MY READING:
(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)
When the old heaven and earth are transformed, we will fellowship intimately with God.
INSIGHT
In the new heaven and new earth, the distance between God and man will be removed. In the Old Testament, the glory of God was displayed as a brilliant light, but men were not able to look on it. In the New Testament, men were able to approach Jesus; but His glory was not seen, being veiled by His human form. In the new heaven and new earth, the glory of God will not be veiled, and we shall be able to behold it. The distance will be removed, and we will fellowship with God forevermore. (Quiet Walk)
Nothing, it seems to me, is quite so strange as the way in which man by nature always objects to the doctrine of regeneration. There is nothing also, I sometimes think, that so demonstrates the depth of sin in the human heart as this objection to the doctrine of the rebirth or being born again. Read the New Testament Scriptures, and you will find that men objected to it in those days. When our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ spoke about it, He was always persecuted. People disliked Him for mentioning it. When He began to expose the depth of iniquity in the human heart and to talk about a rebirth, they invariably misunderstood Him. They disliked it then, and it has always been the same ever since.
When John Wesley was truly converted, he went back to his university at Oxford and preached a sermon on this very subject; and he was hated for it. Those respectable religious people in Oxford disliked this doctrine, and they made it impossible for him to continue preaching there. The natural man, the unregenerate human heart, objected to this great and wondrous biblical doctrine of rebirth and regeneration. And it is equally true today. People sit and listen to an address or sermon on what is called the fatherhood of God or the brotherhood of man and they never object to it. When they are exhorted to live a better life, they never express any objection at all. They say that it is perfectly right, and even though they are reprimanded for not living better lives, they say that it is perfectly true and quite fair and that they could do better. But if a preacher stands before the natural man and says, “You must be born again—you must have a new life from God,” they ask, “What is this strange doctrine?”
A Thought to Ponder
There is nothing that so demonstrates the depth of sin in the human heart as objection to the doctrine of the rebirth.

Wonder at the Word
“Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.” (Psalm 119:129)
Josiah was eight years old when he became king of Judah. His grandfather was Manassah and his father Amon, both evil kings. While it seemed Josiah would follow the same path, he didn’t. “He did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left” (2 Chronicles 34:2). What made such a difference?
As the text above testifies, Josiah found wonder in God’s Word. When Josiah was a young man (age 26), a godly leader read to him the law (torah), which engaged his soul.
And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book. (2 Chronicles 34:31)
Such was the case of the psalmist. The earlier portions of Psalm 119 declare the good that he had done, but now his soul was motivated. He longed (v. 131) and cried for direction and help from the Lord: “Look thou upon me, and…Order my steps in thy word….Deliver me from the oppression of man….Make thy face to shine upon thy servant” (vv. 132-135).
These unselfish prayers were each coupled with a promise to obey. With his heart and correct behavior involved, the psalmist wept for those who “keep not thy law” (v. 136). When the hearts of God’s people break because of sin, revival comes (2 Chronicles 7:14).

During a prank, a student stuck a paper on his classmate’s back that said “𝗜‘𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗽𝗶𝗱“, and asked the rest of the class not to tell the boy.
Thus the students began laughing on and off…
Came afternoon math class started and their teacher wrote a difficult question on the board.
No one was able to answer it except the boy with the sticker.
Amid the unexplained giggles, he walked toward the board and solved the problem.
The teacher asked the class to clap for him and remove the paper on his back.
She told him: “It seems that you don’t know about the paper your classmate has pasted on your back.”
Then the teacher looked at the rest of the class and said:
“Before I give you a punishment, let me tell you 2 things:
First, throughout your Life, people will put labels on you with many nasty words to stop your progress.
Had your classmate known about the paper, he wouldn’t have gotten up to answer the question.

“Second, it’s clear that he doesn’t have any loyal friend among you all to tell him about the sticker.
It doesn’t matter how many friends you have – it is the loyalty you share with your friends that matters.
